No doubt refineries are expensive but selling the raw product decade after decade is a huge loss. Redwater will make good money.but people seem to be bipolar they want refineries but they are also saying that oil is dead and we need to move on. For 1, the lead time to build a refinery is quite long and 2nd, refineries are so expensive to build (especially labour in Canada but also, transporting the component parts of a large refinery to Alberta as well) that the profits would be less than if they just exported raw product We've been hearing about how long it takes to build a refinery for many decades now. Heck.... a dozen could have already been built and Canada wouldn't be in the this situation now. The problem is that all levels of government works hard for the next election, not necessarily towards the betterment for the future. Plus people tend to think with their heart instead of with their head. I mean, a bunch of ducks covered with oil is a more powerful image than realizing that potentially billions of dollars lost in government revenue that could have gone towards health care, homelessness, education, etc.
