  1. Either way you slice it this is a very very risky move for the Canucks in our current stage of rebuilding, this is not a contender looking to push itself over the top... We are a young team with a good chance to be a lottery team for a few years. If the Canucks end up pulling an Ottawa and give the lightning a #4 overall draft pick it's lights out for Benning if you ask me...

    ME TOO

but teams don't give up their good players

They give up their middle, which we have in spades

So, we would be no further ahead

maybe a small up grade, but chances are. not

Example......Vegas....you might get Miller, but you won't get Karlsson

you will get....2 - 2nds value, not usually 1st value

    IMO

    Another example is.........Tampa

you will get picks, maybe a middle player, but not a Cal Foote

Maybe a team like Toronto or San Jose, who don't have many picks loose out

Sure that's what they want... you play hardball... if they will not give up a top six player you move on. Other teams needing bottom six players can "help" them.

  3. Weaponizing cap space is for teams with zero prospects and are desperate to land some sort of talent by taking on a cap hit.

We are not in this position... if you want to weaponize cap space, sign a good player to actually make a difference on the ice.

I am more of a proponent of taking advantage of teams in cap hell by taking a useful player off their hands not a bum...

If they don't like it they can pay the cap penalties...

  5. Yeah for a guy who's only interest is getting the most money possible, not that any of us are any different, and no loyalty to the countries he plays in, it would not be a stretch for Panarin to at least consider Vancouver... We have cap space available and ownership willing to spend to the cap. His agent would be silly to not look into it.

Not that I particularly want Panarin around.

I look forward to CDC's arguing for and against Pettersson's playing in North America next year. Should be heated.

Should be straight forward if he continues to dominate the Swedish league... nothing more to learn or prove you move on up.

  7. I think it's pretty obvious why he would select Vancouver, he comes into a team in turmoil, a challenge to build a winner, to make a difference and cement his legacy as a coach. Pittsburgh even though some cracks have appeared are a powerhouse with some of the games best players... There would always be the thought that the coach was a secondary influence who could always be construed as riding the coat-tails of the crosbys and malkins.

  8. Geez you cannot compare all small players and project they will be effective OR not. It all come down to the players gumption, smarts and physical ability plus development arc. Some turn out alright, a lot do not.

As far as Schroeder goes maybe he will improve maybe he wont, but he has done nothing so far but get hurt. It has to raise red flags. In my opinion it really depends on what goals the canucks have this year, if they sign some free agents and ice a cap team again I do not see a spot for him.

  9. Biggest issue I had when AV was coaching was the lack of gameplan, you could see it when under pressure, we only had one play... off the glass and out, or dump and change... the entire team seemed to have no clue what to do with the puck when losing. Seemed like they were being told to do that safe play no?

Was Torts the answer? maybe not, he is pretty consistent with alot of NHL coaches structures.

Did Gillis need to do more on the trade front? hard to say, might have gotten a bit gunshy...

  10. If we get Draisaitl or Dal Colle, I am super happy. If someone grabs Nylander in the top 5, we will a chance to draft one of these players.

It will be interesting to see if we trade a vet like Higgins, Booth or Hansen for a prospect or picks. Who knows, maybe we can find another Pavel Bure like player in the 6th round.....ok that is a far fetched fantasy but we probably thought that in the year Pavel was picked.

Bure was considered ineligible at the time we drafted him. We knew bure played 4 more games somewhere that other scouts and gms did not know about... Making bure eligible. There is in fact no way you could draft a bure like player in the sixth round

  11. Yeah not sure where the negative comments are coming from, in my opinion his game is improving and he has shown abilities not many of our players have. If he can stay focused and play a 60 minute game Kassian could be a dominant player. Kassian has shown shifts where he can be a force along the boards has explosive skating for a big guy, and has elite playmaking skills and vision.

Of course he has issues with poor timing and bad judgement and that can bite him in the you know what. And I'll be the first one to admit not all players ever put it all together and I'm not saying Kassian will... But if he can put it all together and become a pro his package of skills put him at the top of our talent. Some of those passes are right up there with Sedinery, he sees the ice well.

If you cannot see that you simply aren't watching the games or just being obtuse

  12. I'll be honest when I say I usually refuse to see Higgins as a top six player, I don't think he has the stickhandling to make plays with the puck from my experience watching him. But... He has been playing well as of late, personally I think he is feeding of Santorelli's shifty skating on the boards. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks.

If he keeps producing then so be it he can be a top six guy, it's not how you score its how many right?

Keep in mind he is a 110% effort guy, and when everybody is in playoff mode putting in 110% as well, Higgins might look average.

  13. From what I see is a guy caving under pressure, does not want to make a mistake, and lacks the confidence to make judgment calls on the defensive side of the puck. Time and again you can see Kassian trying to stay in good positioning and cover passing lanes, but lets an opponent attack the net unchecked 5 feet away. Hard to say if his defensive game is stalled or not.

In the offensive zone I see the upside, he has explosive speed and can retreive pucks, good vision and passing. Still learning to use his body against men over boys it seems alot of the time. And he has a decent shot that he gets on net when he gets a chance.

All in all he looks like he lacks confidence right now. If he can see the light and use that explosive speed to check and avoid checks I think he can be a dangerous player. Not saying he will develop or not, but he does have the tools.

  14. Tough when a guy like Booth is untradeable... But with the assets we traded for him (sammuelson) we should be able to waive him or send him packing for a draft pick. Kesler is untradeable as well since he figures himself to be Guy Lafleur nowadays.

I think Kesler can still be effective with a playmaker but Torts would have to enforce the law to keep Booth and Kesler from trying to beat three defenders and firing the totally expected easy shots on goal every freaking shift. Kesler is effective with Sedin. Kesler just tries to do waaay to much when he is the only real talent on the line IMHO.

Biggest challenge is finding that playmaking winger... Or finding the center who wins draws if Kesler moves up to the sedins or even to the wing

I think we could give our youth a shot playing with santorelli... At the very least Higgins and Hansen would not be on the top six.

Sedins/kesler has been effective and keeps Keslers in a secondary support role going to the net and sets for one timers

Booth Santorelli Kassian or try Shinkaruk if we move Booth. We just need some chemistry on the second line.

I don't know... A lot of question marks on the second line.

Gotta find a way to keep Booth and Kesler from rushing the puck tho... Terrible.
