Pittsburgh Penguins Roster Report
GM ActionJax09 has been busy the last couple weeks locking up RFA’s. The NHL roster is taking shape with a clear indication of what the team will look like in the 2023-24 season.
It looks like forwards Kevin Stenlund, Marco Rossi, Emil Bemstrom, Jamieson Rees, Mackie Samoskevich, Samuel Fagemo, Carter Mazur and Trey Fix-Wolansky will be battling for the final two roster spots in camp.
On defence the eighth spot will be up for grabs among Ty Smith, Ronnie Attard, and Mason Lohrei
In the crease it’s crowded to say the last with Husso, Petersen, Kochetkov and Primeau all fighting for a job. Petersen has a massive chip on his shoulder coming into 2023-24 after being assigned to the AHL for the majority of last season. He will look to bounce back to prove he’s worth the deal he was signed to.
We are looking forward to a very competitive training camp and pre season.

Question/confirmation re: Buyouts:
So a player with a NMC can be bought out of their contract without a doubt. The grey area is a player say with a NMC cannot be placed on Waivers or traded etc at anytime so does one still place the player on Unconditional Waivers ( CDCGML requirement to buyout a player ) for the purpose of a buyout as we are instructed in the CBA or is there something we should adjust so as like in real life a player with a NMC does not require Waivers before being bought out ?
Thank you.
Just like with OEL in real life. With an NMC I don’t think you should have to put them on waivers to buy them out

Shortly after this situation the CBA was changed to allow RFAs that were not signed by December to become UFA

Well without getting into the details, the player got offersheeted to a one year deal that took them to UFA. I suspected a nudge from the agent to the offersheeter because of the one year deal but nothing I can prove. Let’s just say relations with me and that GM were not great going forward.

A question for the first executive as I can't seem to work this out from reading the CBA.
Can a RFA refuse an offer made to him then claim he wants to test free Agency in this league ?
This has just happened to me and I have never seen this happen in this league apart from offer sheets.
https://hockeyanswered.com/guide-to-restricted-free-agents-nhl/
According to this IRL an RFA
" They do not have to sign, but they do not have many great options if they want to play in the NHL.
The options for an RFA that does not want to sign with his team and not play, hope another teams signs them to a contract and it is not matched by your current team, or play in Europe "
Edit
After checking with the agent and his seasons played, it seems the player in question has been wrongly listed as an RFA on my team chart.
I have seen this happen before but it is rare and typically after a lot of heated negotiations.

Ok I think it’s time to chime in here. I’ve been in the league for 10 years. For a short period of time I’ve been an executive member. I’ve seen guys come and go. Tantrums and outbursts. Long time GMs get fed up and never return. At the end of the day no one is winning money here and no one is getting paid. I’ve been less than happy with certain situations myself but getting pissed off about it and raising a stink about it does absolutely nothing. I can promise you that. I’ve seen it so many times and it never does any good. It’s honestly a waste of time. No one cares and if you leave in a rage quit no one will care. When things don’t go your way you need to take it like a man like the GMs in the NHL do and move on. I personally became frustrated with the lack of ability to resign my own UFAs about five years ago so I changed my strategy. And have enjoyed the game much more to be honest. Guys need to realize that the agents do their best and at the end of the day because we have 30 guys trying to achieve the same goal it’s impossible to keep everyone happy.
