I have 0 problem with the 3rd year. He will be what 32? he got .5 too much in my opinion. I’d have been fine with 3 and absolutely thrilled with 2.75. Given what guys like him are getting paid around the league I’m not surprised by it, especially if there are other things going on we don’t know about... which I’m sure there couldn’t possibly be. Verbal guarantee... what’s the source for that again and does it matter? They signed him because they want him to play so it’s kind of a moot point. I haven’t seen anyone anywhere suggest Benning got a discount in this deal so why suggest it’s happening? Again, the only reason to light your hair on fire over this is if you’re just looking for something to blow up over.

Veteran bottom 9 guys is a pretty big swath of players lol. That being said I don’t think your point is completely out to lunch. I would have to do more digging to see the actual impact it has had rather than just what it may look like at first glance. I still don’t see how this is a heinous signing given the league wide context.... add covid in and it’s perhaps a small over payment.

I think Dzingel, Sheary (although his contract looks like a bit of an outlier), Byron, Shaw, Connolly and Donskoi are all very fair comparables. An average of those six salaries is a 3.1 mil cap hit. take out Sheary and the average is 3.59. Looks like unless I’m missing any real good comparables Pearson is getting paid right about what he should be. Edit: I should say... it looks like unless I’m missing a number of good comparables rather than any.

So a middle six forward in his prime was going to sign for less than 2-2.5?

Tanner Pearson is tied for 81st in ppg by left wings this year at .33. That puts him in the middling end of third line production for the year. His career .44 would put him at the top 60 mark for this year (lower end of 2nd line production). His last seasons .64 would land him at 35 which is pushing first line production.
