  1. This may be an unpopular opinion, and there is a qualifier with it.

Provided that OJ finally shows why he was drafted 1st round, AND Rathbone shows his full potential, I wouldn't mind trading Hughes before his potential bridge deal expires. I keep looking at Edmonton and Toronto as examples. They have so much cap tied up in a few players that they have very limited ability to acquire quality depth. Colorado is quickly catching them in this department; they lost a Vezina caliber goalie.

Hughes is just not big enough to effectively play in his own zone without being overpowered several times per game. Unless his partner is as good as Shea Weber in his prime, then this will lead to several quality chances for the other team. No one...not Roy, not Brodeur, not Hasek, not Jacques Plante...can stop everything all the time. Look at the teams that are making the Finals; they all have a large D overall, and no one approaching being as small as Hughes. He can skate like the wind all he wants, have edgework that rivals Olympic skaters...but if he's bodied off the puck and kept out of the way, there's nothing he can do.

Again, there has to be some qualifiers on trading him and I doubt that both conditions will be met. OJ would have to essentially become Edler 2.0 and Rathbone show top pairing potential.

  2. Without going through 83 pages of material, I might be doubling up on someone. That said

    Petey - 3 x 7

    Hughes - 3 x 6.

Let's see if the UFA market for defensemen is still absurdly warped like it is now. If so and Hughes wants 9-9.5+, then he needs to be dealt. Petersson I could see at 9. Hughes, unless he really significant improves his Dzone play, isn't worth that much. Makar and Nurse, et al, have completely screwed the marketplace for #1 D, even if they're not a "generational" talent. The last one of those was Lindstrom in Detroit. Him, I would have paid 11+ for.

  3. Vegas - 107 pts...but this is deceiving as their 2nd half was only 49pts

    Edmonton - 102

Vancouver - 98...also deceiving as the 2nd half is 53pts

    LA - 88

    Seattle - 84

    Calgary - 82

    San Jose - 72

    Anaheim - 68

    EP40 gets 91 points - 32g 59a

    Rathbone get 45...in Abbotsford

Boeser gets his first 40G season

Demko racks up 5SO along with a .919 save % and comes in 9th in Vezina

Podkolzin gets 34pts on 12G 22A, primarily playing 3rd line, BUT...gets widely recognized as maybe the top 2way rookie

Oh yeah...we take out both Edmonton and Vegas in the playoffs, but lose to eventual Cup winners Colorado in the West final in 5.

Considering Hughes and OEL will likely log most of the offensive minutes whether on the PP, late moments of the game to tie things up if we are down, and majority of the offensive zone starts, it makes me wonder where exactly Rathbone's style of game fits in here.

I really do think Rathbone will have to add a two way defensive side to his game. I think he has the skills and humility to evolve his game to encompass those aspects.

With that as much as he showed well in his 8 game stint, part of me feels that he will start in Abbotsford to log high minutes in all areas of the game. I think he will benefit as he would surely be Abbotsford's top dman.

This is exactly what I think would be best for his progression. He needs to play big minutes, and be a top QB on the power play. The best option for that will be Abbotsford. With the farm team that close, Shaw can much more easily monitor the farm team D progress. OJ is likely to never be a top 2, and maybe not a top 4 on a true contending team. But develop him for the year in Van, and see if he has value at the trade deadline. Of course, this only happens if we sign him. Rathbone, given a year of big minutes, can maybe come in next year and be able to take a minute or two off the workload of Hughes and OEL, making the D that much deeper.

Thats awesome. Who needs to spend billions on a vaccine, when you can control someone with a red hat and a free rally.

Not that Biden is any better. He has problems remembering his own name, at times. The best candidates, as far as I was concerned, never made it to the primaries...or even ran.

And since this thread is actually about next year's salary cap, that 1M could mean a difference. You never know.

Texas north, don't doubt us lol

Be glad the average Canadian is pro-vaccine, and the majority (even if its just above 50%) are vaccinated. I'm in the South (Arkansas) where the red-necks still figure its a government conspiracy to control them. Hah! Yeah, this COVID is controlling them right into the grave. The second largest metro area in Arkansas is now turning people away from the hospitals; no beds, no ventilators, not enough staff. Memphis (in Tennessee) started this today also. Little Rock (where I am) is having to take the excess from them and we are about 24-48 hours away from capacity. I've got friends in the hospitals, mostly nurses, that are saying the morale is horrible, and don't be surprised for a spike in suicide rates.

And, oh...CR7...I wouldn't be comparing anyone to Texas. Down here, that state is called Tex-Ass. Stick to being from Alberta...its a lot better!

As far as Virt goes, was there a worse kept secret in Vancouver? See ya, bud. Good luck resurrecting your career and your life.

  8. This is one draft pick I believe Benning missed. The very next pick was Nicolas Hague. He's already playing decent minutes with Vegas. It would be real easy to imagine a pairing of Hague with either Rathbone or Hughes. Instead, Kole Lind. Didn't show much, left unprotected, now gone. We wouldn't need to worry if Hamonic will return if Hague had been the pick. Oh well, I'm sure pretty much every GM, past and present, has a few picks they'd love to have a "do over" on.

Orr - never be another like him

Mario- at his best he was the most talented, dangerous forward in history

Wayne- didn't like him, don't like him, yet he is still number three, even for me.

Hasek- he struck fear in his opponents

Roy- Almost up there with Hasek

Gordie- heck long career, but his best was not quite uop their with Mario and wayne

Broduer- not as good as Roy but very very good in his own right.

McDavid- will probably move up if he contiues to play as he is.

Pretty much exactly my thoughts. I'd put Mario half a hair ahead of Orr. Other than that, no changes. And that is EXACTLY how I feel about 99

  10. I'll take Lafleur in a close call over Bure. I watched both. Both scared the H*** out of the other teams. Both had lethal shots. Both had speed to burn. What sets them apart to me is Lafleur superior playmaking abilities. I will admit, with the cast of characters he played with, there were several players capable of significant goal scoring...so the assist count can be a little misleading. Still...both at the absolute peak of their careers, Bure was a finisher almost without equal; Lafleur was better at the overall game.

Honestly, though, it's like comparing your favorite aunt's pecan pie to your other favorite aunt's key lime pie. You can't go wrong either way!

  11. Only real issue I have with Edler coming back is this. Towards the end of the year, he was taking penalties that are very indicative of someone who can't quite keep up anymore. I don't mind bringing him back, AS LONG AS it is for a 3rd pairing role at best. I definitely want him to get his 100th goal with us, and also want him to retire as a Canuck. But no more top pairing minutes, no more PP and limited PK. 1-2yr contract at 1.75-2M at best. Nothing more than that. Essentially, it would be advertisement that Vancouver can be a great long term market and possibly sway a UFA or 2 that needs just a little more convincing.

  12. Just to see what you people think about this. Say NJD extend an offer sheet for Quinn Hughes? One that returns a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We are in a bit of a bind about resigning Quinn and Petey, and others to remain competitive. Rathbone has been impressive in his short time. No, he's not as much of a force offensively, but he might be a better long term option. That would free up the limited cap space and give us a lot of what Benning is supposed to be good at...drafting.

I VERY seriously doubt it would happen, but NJD does have the cap space to pull something like this off. Any maybe two very high 1st round picks might be enough to make dealing for the #1 overall not such a reach.

  13. I'd say the likely standings are:

    1) Edmonton - the only reason they don't win the Pacific next year is goaltending. They have the offense to make up for some defensive issues...which are starting to resolve a little on their own. But Koskinen has to go!

    2) Vegas - at what point does Fleury finally start to show his age? I think Vegas will, next year, finally start to lose enough depth to cost them a game or three over the course of the year. Just enough to finish behind Edmonton.

There will be a clear divide here. Vegas and Edmonton are the class of the division. Both could be around 110 points. And since 3 teams from each division make the playoffs, the 4th place team in our division will likely not qualify for a wild card.

    3) Vancouver - this off season is going to be big. I really hope whomever the management is starts us down the path that Ottawa did this year; play the youth over the vets and by end of season, they are the vets. Demko will steal enough games, along with an improved D (provided Baumgartner is gone!) to get us to finish just ahead of

    4) the Kings - their rebuild is turning the corner. Is is finished? Oh Lord no. But they are starting to come out the other side.

I would not be surprised if the Kings and us flip-flop these positions. Whoever gets 4th will be very hard pressed to qualify for the playoffs. The remaining four are probably going to be in two groups...not good (5 and 6) and HORRIBLE (7 and 8)

    5) Flames - I see a partial collapse next year, even worse than this year. Lucic is starting to show some age. Tanev can't do another injury free season. Johny Hockey will likely be gone over the summer. And Ottawa got the better Tchachuk brother. Matthew is a playmaking whiner.

    6) Seattle - don't know who they're gonna take, but it's gotta be better than the train wreck that

    7) San Jose - no cap room, aging D...did I mention cap room? We whine about LE's contract. Just wait until Karlsson can't skate anymore. Which leaves

    8) Anaheim - they are hitting rock bottom. Wouldn't be surprised if they are the worst team in the league next year.

Hey, this is just opinion and a little bit of fun!

Good lord, were we excited when he came out of juniors to play his 5 game stint. Everything he did was at warp speed. I didn’t see that type energy again until Bure showed up.

Remember everyone thought we actually had a decent 2nd line: Lemay, Hlinka and Rota. Moe fresh off of scoring 60 goals in the OHL, Rota finally showing something and Hlinka was a known international star. Um...oops!

  15. Only if 1) he agrees to one year at a time, 2) a salary commensurate with a bottom pairing D; call it 1.5-1.75M, and 3) knowing he's going to get "maintenance days", ie rested on back-to-backs, at least once on road trips 4 games long or longer, etc. Benning or no Benning, I'd also give him a "gentleman's agreement" to not trade him. He's the best, or 2nd best, Dman the Canucks have ever had. Juice flamed, then flamed out. Edler is definitely on his last legs, but give him the dignity to determine when it's time to hang 'em up.

  16. What you've got is fine...if the goal is a bio of the players you want to cover. If the goal is more about Covid, then make it that. Give us what the player(s) went through. Were their families affected? Did they lose anyone close to them? Did they themselves get ill? If so, any lasting affects on them? Were they playing really well when this crap hit, and if so, have they continued their hot streak or have they cooled off?

And also...don't worry about the second language issue, unless you plan to self-publish. There's not an editor and/or publisher around that would leave glaring mistakes in a book. Now, if you are self-publishing, plan on spending a little $$ to get the book through an editor, at least. Not for content, but for spelling/grammar/syntax at the very least. I have a friend (not close but still) who self published AND self edited. The book is very difficult to read; the idea is brilliant but it's hard to get around the mistakes to see the story.

Once you've done all that, and you feel you have a fairly polished product, then try to get the book to "beta readers". You may or may not have to pay there, but it will get the book read before publishing.

FYI, I am a published writer, with some short stories out there, and my first novel is with a publisher right now, anticipating a December release. I've been through the mill with all this stuff already.

If you guys think Gudbranson is bad and D. Just wait until you watch Bowey.

Here's the difference. Guddy came with a 1st round pick pedigree. Bowey comes with an almost bottom of the barrel pedigree. Ergo, Guddy played WAY below his pedigree. If Bowey can manage the occasional fill-in as a 6-7 Dman, he's lived up to and maybe exceeded expectations. We don't expect anything from Bowey...so anything good will be a +, anything bad is exactly what we expect

as you can see from the video the officer in control of that situation was the experienced officer in his late 40's. the new recruit as you can see from his expressions is nervous about the situation, but does as he's trained to do.

the older officer would likely not be a new recruit because of his weight, so I wouldn't assume that situation is a result of lack of training. the older officer also probably was acting as instructed though too. there may be a few instances where there was poor judgment (the threat, the kick) but I'm sure pulling the weapon and pepper spraying were trained practises.

i believe that race had very little to do with this officers behavior, and it was a result of another civil servant not following his orders. a man dressed in army fatigue's likely has access to a pistol.

I think this situation is over blown by the media

That is a crock, and you know it. For a traffic violation, the officer does NOT start the procedure with his weapon drawn. If it is true that the Army officer took a little extra time to pull over, fine. That is so easily explained. There was absolutely no reason for this to escalate like it did, except for the two Stooges, pardon me, police officers, looked like they equated an expensive vehicle and a black man with something dangerous. That's called racial profiling; this is a text book example. They would have already known this was an Army Lt. if they had bothered to use correct procedure, which is calling in his plates. I don't care what state it is, they all have a person's vehicle on file and what they do. The older officer (idiot) needs to be suspended pending investigation, then stuck on a desk for the remainder of his career until he can retire. Immediately!! The younger one needs to be shown the correct way to deal with pulling someone over. It sure as hell isn't by not knowing who you are supposed to be talking to, and if the vehicle in question belongs to them.

If they had done this correctly, they would have been perfectly within their rights to give the Army gentleman a warning, or maybe even a ticket, for not pulling over immediately. That's it!!

There is no excuse that can be given for this kind of shi**y police work. And people wonder why racial tension in the US is as high as it has been since the 1960s?

And before you ask, I showed this to a friend of mine that is a State Patrolman. He said, and I quote "The older cop doesn't need his badge anymore". My friend was equally disgusted at this.

And no, no military person is going to have a gun just sitting there. If anything, we (and I include myself though no longer active) are held to a higher standard. If he has a firearm, it is not loaded and the clip is likely in the glovebox.
