I agree. Leipsic had a couple of great games but IMHO he has a lot to prove this season. I saw lots of defensive lapses in his game as well. Baer has had back to back seasons where he has shown +20 goal potential. That said I consider the odds of him being a piece in 3 years as unlikely. With the right line mates he could just as easily score + 30 and make my prediction look very foolish.

Honestly, I would have no qualms about trading Leipsic; I definitely would about trading Baer.

But since this thread is about Loui...I'd like to see him getting some shifts with Horvat and Boeser. Not that many though; neither one of them are what you would consider a classic playmaker, and Loui has done best when he is a net-front presence. In fact, with Henrik's retirement, none of our centers except Gagner are considered playmakers. Hmm...Loui with Gagner and Goldobin? Part of me shudders at the thought, but maybe the two vets are what Goldy needs to bring out the best in his game?

  2. After all said and done, this is the pick that I am looking forward to the most. I still have some slight misgivings about Hughes (pun not intended!), but Woo? Give him a couple of years of pro training, and watch him mature to 210lbs. He looks like he has better offensive instincts than Tanev, but has the same "D zone" thinking as Tanev...just bigger and willing to use it. That, or as pointed out, a bigger and more talented Biega. Could easily imagine this guy as a middle pairing in his prime, teamed with someone like Stetch.

  3. After having the information about Wilde in hindsight, I believe Benning got the right guy now. Give this kid a couple of years and some professional training, we're likely to see a 210-215lb guy; Tanev "Heavy" type. Being an R hand player is bonus.

Good pick for us. We are starting to see the remainder of needed depth filling out. Goalie is pretty much set, forwards looking good, and now the D is coming around.

You could be right, but I don’t see it that way at all.  I our coaches fast learning how good OJ really is, and putting him with Tanev.  OJ might get 30 plus points this season.  He’s a very gifted player.

Edler and Guddy were awesome together, and Guddy wasn’t even healthy.  They are going to log a lot of tough minutes, which will take a big load off Tanev.

I'm with you on this one. I just wonder who gets traded to make room for Juolevi. If we go with exactly the same people as last year, who does OJ beat out to make the team? I believe OJ will become a good to very good (but not great) Dman; paired with Tanev I think is the way to go. I also think @Ihatetomatoes has it right, it may take half the season before OJ starts "getting it".

For those who believe our players have little or no perceived trade value, here's what a Florida writer proposed for Edler today:

    To Florida Panthers
    Alexander Edler (D)

    To Vancouver Canucks
    First Round Pick 2019
    Third Round Pick 2020
    MacKenzie Weegar (D)
    Jonathan Ang (C)

    To Florida Panthers
    Alexander Edler (D)

    To Vancouver Canucks
    First Round Pick 2019
    Aleksi Heponiemi (C)

I just read that article also. That would be a helluva return for Eagle. I think I would prefer the first trade, myself.

  6. My thoughts haven't changed on this kid. He stands a pretty good chance of at least being a call-up during the season next year, and firm competition for a full time spot in the 19-20 season. I think one or both of Archie and Gaunce need to be looking over their shoulders at Zack.

  7. If we keep Baer, I would like to see him on a line with Gaudette and Virt. Baer has put in a lot of work to get his two-way game up to speed. Combine his talent and abilities with two other players that have the same mind set. Virt drives the play as far as speed goes, allowing Gaudette and Baer to see things develop on their way in, and react to them properly. Both Baer and Gaudette have very good passing ability. I could see this line driving teams crazy on the forecheck, and scoring more than a few themselves.

    News somewhat related to Pouliot...

A minor steal at this point. However, if DP comes close to fulfilling his potential, then this will be a major steal.

Sautner is solid. Good physical Dman. IMO he's moved up the charts.

Totally agree with you. As the present depth chart is, I would say he is 7-8. If some trades happen, like moving 2-3 of Tanev/MDZ/Hutton/Poulliott, then I like his chances of making the permanent roster next year.

  10. The kid needs a year or two in Utica. The WHL is not like playing in any pro league. He needs to get some time to get used to the speed of the game, especially in combination with some size.

I see Lind as having a ceiling of a borderline first line, but more likely a good-very good 2nd liner. He likely could pair up with a center that likes to drive the net, and is more of a scorer than playmaker.

Great find in the second round. I was originally a bit peeved that we didn't draft Nicholas Hague (who was the very next pick). But after Lind's season, I'd say we got a really good player, potentially.

LOL.   Sorry, figured most of your Canuck types are all huddled together in Kitsolina or wherever at a coffee shop sharing internet bandwidth waiting for your triple foamed caramel fat-free skim latte with sprinkles.

That wasn't me even when I did live there. More like...one of three or four pubs near Granville Island, downing some Granville Island lagers after work, and drinking real coffee to sober up when needed. I cannot stand Starbucks!

Wow.   Is that happening on your coast too or is it coming - don't you get Hawaii's weather when it leaves?

Dude, I'm in Arkansas. The weather we get here falls under the definition of schizophrenic, at least in the fall and spring. Fairly common to go from freezing to 85 degrees in three days, mixing in thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail and the occasional snow/sleet. But...Vancouver does get a much calmer version of that. MUCH calmer!

The problem with Baer is that he's quickly running out of time to prove he's more than just 'good enough'. You don't keep and build around 'good enough'. You give other, younger, cheaper, higher ceiling options that opportunity and move ' Mr. good enough' for other assets and apply those resources (play time, contract slot, cap space etc) elsewhere.

@aGENT, I think you've hit it on the head. Baer is a nice complementary piece, and (sorta) held down the top LW spot for a couple of years. But now that we are starting to develop depth, Baer is going to have to round his game out. I say play a line of Baer-Gaudette-Virt; Baer won't have to be a net-driver in this lineup, he can be the playmaker. But...this line will likely see deployment in situations where they are matched against a scoring line. Right now, Baer and Granlund are almost interchangeable, with Granlund quite a bit better two way but Baer having the edge on scoring. One of the two, I think, will not make it through next year's training camp with the team. The other will have to show better than the last couple of years, or find themselves TDL bait. Maybe Minnesota would turn loose of a lower round pick for Granlund to reunite the brothers, who knows.

Ben Hutton likely has the AHL at the bottom and the second line of this team at his peak (but not the second line of other teams).  The reality is that he's probably the 7th D as it stands now.  BUT, I do think it's too early to write him off as an AHLer.  Tough to fix the bad play and skating but certainly within reach to correct his attitude and fitness level.

I'm being a realist that the status quo isn't good enough but I'm also not writing him off......I think this market turns against players too quickly when they have a bad couple of years which I think is tough when a player is still below the prime age.

This ^ seems to me to be about the best summary of Hutton. I won't be surprised if he is back, and further wouldn't be surprised to see him sent down. I do think this is the year he either "gets it" or he's gone. He has the size to be an effective Dman, and he had the mobility. I think he's tried to upgrade his size, but it has cost him in movement. Maybe if he trimmed 5-10 pounds off to regain some speed and movement, he would be better off. The fact that he had a bad season this year shouldn't be cause to say he's finished. But...with our improving depth, if he doesn't improve enough by the TDL, I see moving him. After all, he was only a 5th round pick. He's already played more than the average 5th rounder, so that's a win (one of the few for Gillis).

  15. I remember posting before the season my expectations for Hutton; I was WAY off. Extremely disappointed in his development (to be more accurate, he seemingly regressed this year). That being said...I would like to see him back, in a 7-8 role alongside Biega. Let Green work with him some. Hutton needs to lose just a little weight, I believe he is playing at too high of a weight.

If he works out, great. If not, move him at next year's TDL. Maybe we can find a team that could absorb a cap dump so that we can maybe get back the 5th round pick we used to get him in the first place.

  16. I think next year, Virt and Gaudette will become a combo, and push each other. Both are fast, both love to drive the net, both either are or are becoming two-way players. They are only 2 months apart in age (Virt the older). Don't be surprised to see both of them around 30-35 points next year, maybe a few more if there is a winger that can match and/or compliment their styles. Say a playmaker winger like Baer, Leipsig or Goldobin.

  17. I like the apparent pairing with Gaudette. Two faster skaters, both willing to drive the net, neither one will back down from confrontation though they're not "instigators". Gaudette, I believe, is the more talented of the two, but I could see them pushing each other.

Next year, I could easily see Virt ending with a stat line of about 18g-18a, and Gaudette with 15g-24a. With Leipsig looking not too bad with Horvat and Boeser, I wouldn't mind seeing Baer being the third member of that line.

I see it a little differently.

His offensive output has been alright this year but he's still on the bad side of a lot of defensive lapses and brutal give aways.

The good news is, I see it as a fixable situation in the offseason.

As it stands, it sounds like JB wants Edler beyond next season.

If this is the case, JB needs to find a compatible defenseman that nuetralizes Alex's weeknesses.

    Enter, Ian Cole.

He's experienced, has physicality, and is defensively responsible.

On paper, at least, he'd make a great pairing with Edler.

I was going to suggest Jacob Trouba but that's a little too much to hope for.

If he gets to free agency, I'd like to see a serious play for him.

I have been looking at potential UFA Dmen, and his name stuck out to me also. He looks like a good fill-in as he hits his prime, and won't rob the bank to sign him. Good size to him also, with a little offense to boot

  19. I get the argument about a smaller player, especially the short stature of Palmu. That being said, there are a few things that size, or lack of, brings. With his thickness, and LOW center of gravity, it will take a concerted effort to knock him off his feet. Also, and I know this from my best friend. Someone of that height and thickness, hitting you at speed, freakin' hurts! Playing football with him, or ball hockey, I had been hit by guys 6'1"-6'4" and well over 200 lbs; then my friend hits me (he was 5'7 3/4" and 200lbs). I'd rather take the hit from the larger guys; it's not concentrated solely from about mid-chest down (I'm 6'2"...almost). Also, chasing around guys like that can get REALLY tiring!

Do I think he will make the team? Not really sure, and most likely bottom 9 only, if. But I will be cheering him on!

And if he gets outplayed next fall and there's no room at the inn? I mean I could see us 'Stecher' a Pettersson or Dahlen to Utica until we sort out a trade etc but unless he can show some pretty serious improvement and commitment this summer...

Heck, he's not doing himself any favours with his play right now. I could easily see us package him this summer without a massive turn around in his play. I think management will have a pretty good idea of what we do/don't have by April.

Not that I'm a big fan of his or anything, but...he is still pretty young. That being said, I wouldn't shed any tears if he was traded away at the draft. As little as Virt has shown (up until recently) I would still take him over Goldy.
I'm just thinking that management may want to have an extended look at him, which would keep him here for a little while longer.

If it comes down to Goldy or Gaudette, all money's on the Hockey_Gaud, if for nothing more than the fact he brings it every game, and in a responsible 2-way capacity.  Goldy will need a complete renaissance over the summer to have a hope in that competition.

    Um, yeah...this^^^^^

Goldy has a chance here, mostly because of his talent (not his drive). I'd say he gets next year to prove himself here; if he doesn't, I see him as a trade deadline clearance.

Baer is scoring at a top 6 rate. I misses more games than I like but his game has matured a lot in 2 years.

What I like is that he will learn from lessons, and shows it pretty quickly. Definitely a 2nd line type. I'd like to see if a line of Baer-Guadette-Virt could do something next year.

  23. I'm all for trading him. If offered a 2nd...I'm not looking any further, I'm grabbing it.  A 3rd...I'd take it provided it was top 10 in that round. Lower than that, I'm wanting at least a "B" grade player, preferably Dman, in return. All in all, that wouldn't be a bad return over a 2yr period for Honey Badger.
