  1. Was thinking something like this might be fun to try, especially when the Canucks are down late in a game:

    Petey - horvat - boeser

    Baertschi - Miller - Ferland

    pearson - Sutter - Virtanen

    Roussel - Beagle - Motte

    Edler - Hughes

    Tanev - Myers

    Benn - Stecher

    marky

    demko

this basically gives the Canucks a chance to have all their big guns out on the ice at the same time, with still decent depth behind them

Fair enough.  But then shouldn't the calculation be based on the projected salary cap for the 2020-21 season?  If the approach is to base the offer on a percentage of the cap hit, then wouldn't the team and the agent be looking at the incoming cap hit?  Using the 2019-20 cap to pitch this as a theory is OK, but I would think they would be using the 2020-21 cap numbers when they actually sit down to negotiate.

Don't get me wrong, I like the theory, I just think you're a little early.

What could make this more interesting is if either side opts out this September, although I think that is highly unlikely.

You’re absolutely right. I used the wrong year by mistake!! I will edit the OP

  3. In 2017 the Buffalo Sabres signed Jack Eichel to a 8 year 80 million dollar contract which was 13.33 % if the cap at the time. Eichel still had 1 year left in his ELC and many viewed this contract as an overpayment. Looking at the current RFA market, it’s hard to argue that 10 million per season for the next 7 years is overpaying for a number 1 centre entering his prime.

My my idea is JB should pursue the same contract with pettersson. Assuming  the salary cap is 83.5 million for the 2020-2021 season, 13.33 % of the cap would be 11.14 million.

Locking petey up long term at this dollar figure before the final year of his ELC is, imo, the smartest move the Canucks can make regarding pettersson. It eliminates the possibility of an offer sheet and sets the Canucks up for a decade of success

  4. I think this is what happened (just guessing):

Aqualini asked GMJB what his offseason plans were. GMJB told him he wanted to acquire a top 6 forward and a top 4 D. Aqua agreed that this was a good plan. GMJB went out and completed this plan very well all things considered. Aqua rewarded GMJB because he executed his plan.

I think everyone in management and ownership expects playoffs no later than 2 years, and JB has set up the team to achieve that. He has some job security now, but if they don’t make it by 2021 I would imagine he still ends up fired anyways

  5. Seems like moving a whole lot of similar level pieces around with no real improvement. I suppose 1 benefit is that Sutter and Baertschi have both often been injured and the team is replacing them with two mire enduring players, but in the end I still think the team is better off leaving things be.

Sutter has has worn an “A” since he came to the Canucks so I imagine he has some sort of significant locker room presence. I think Baertschi was a groomsman at Bo’s wedding this summer if I’m not mistaken.

No point moving those two guys out and shaking up the locker room if there’s no tangible improvement on the ice.

  6. Loui eriksson, do we really need him?

realistically I can’t think of a single spot in the line up where I would put LE over someone else. Not even the 13th or 14th spot. For example:

    ferland pettersson boeser

    beartschi horvat miller

    pearson Sutter virtanen

    leivo beagle motte

    roussell (ir)

    goldobin

where do you put LE? Can’t see any spot in there to put him that would make the team better. No use for the guy at all so really I don’t see why he should even get another chance

  7. I think the main hold up on a new contract for Goldobin is Benning wants to know what Boeser’s cap hit will be. After eriksson, schaller, and a third player (biega would be my guess) are all waived, the Canucks will have about 8 million in cap space and 2 roster spots. If boeser signs for 7 mill or less, then Benning know he can sign goldy without making any additional moves (i’m Assuming goldobin will get 1 year x 1 million, then cash in for a bigger payday next season when he has arb rights). However, if boeser costs MORE than 7 million, then Benning has to decide if he either moves on from goldobin or trade a different player to make up the cap space for re-signing him.

IMO once boeser signs, we will be getting goldobin news very shortly after

  8. The team should win more games this year, but even my most optimistic goal projections put us around 270 gf this coming season, with is a little bit better than middle of the pack. I could also see us scoring as little as 200 if lots of players regress or repeat previously poor seasons. I think health and players playing up to their potential will be the deciding factors. If all goes well I can see the team having a similar season to what Nashville had this past season, maybe with more goals against though. Should still be in the hunt for playoffs when all is said and done.

What i I really like about this team is in 2021-2022 they will be cycling into their new core and inject more youth. Likely see podkolzin, woo, dipietro, and maybe Hoglander or madden make the team, while also shedding Sutter, Pearson, Baertschi, edler, and whoever we lose in expansion. If the Canucks can trade away eriksson and maybe beagle (though I like beagle on the team) by then, there will be lots of space for young players and JB will have lots of opportunity to add more high level players. I think we are set up well to have a good season this year and then continue to build for another two years until our core have all come into their prime ages and we still have good youth in support

am I wrong or did you not add the $3,000,000 recapture penalty . I think the league should forgive it anyway as Luongo is still involved with their organization

Recap penalty, spooner buyout, and burried contracts (eriksson and schaller) are all included in this calculation

  10. One obvious landing spot for tanev is Colorado. only Johnson and Makar as RHD on the team. Once rosen and graves are sent down, they'll have 7 roster D, room to add one more. plus, lots of cap space even after rantenen signs for around 9? million. could probably get toronto's 2020 3rd from them and maybe a 2021 2nd?

Then its just a matter of shedding one more contact (baertschi? sutter?) and the Canucks will have more than enough room to sign Boeser and Gardiner.

with gardiner, joulevi, and stetcher all protected for expansion draft, maybe myers gets picked up.]?

Only thing is this puts a dent in my pipe dream to sign Barrie next year lol.

LE to rangers and shattenkirk to vancouver

Was thinking this too. I think it can work if the canucks add. I'm thinking 1 mill retained, rathbone (Adam Fox's D partner last year), 2020 third rounder. then trade tanev to a team with lots of cap but few RHD (Colorado?) for literally anything. eriksson gone and shattenkirk expires same year as petey and hughes.

To address this topic seriously, I haven’t seen any indication from management or coaches that Sutter is pegged for the 4th line.

agreed. I think management and coaching staff really value Sutter. I'd be surprised if he plays less than 16 minutes per game when healthy. probably will have more ice time that even, maybe even the same as pettersson just due to the way Green likes to match lines.

Honestly, not looking to “defend” him either - but if we can’t move him there’s worse fates than Beagle and Loui on your 4th line.  (I’d prefer Motte/Leivo as I’m sure most would.) But at least Beagle/Loui can play some defense.

The worst part would undoubtedly be sifting through the hilaaaarious “10 million dollar 4th line” comments ad nauseam.

Eriksson - Beagle - Sutter. 13.5 million dollar 4th kind but we can realistically role it out this year as a checking line and still compete with other teams easily

also, notice what position he plays...like you mentioned...center and both wings

Career face off percentage is right around 50%. I bet if he does play with Petey and brock he take a a majority of the face offs, similar to Draisaitl taking draws for McDavid in Edmonton.
