if he makes the canucks next year, I wonder if they will shelter him for a season due to defensive issues?  Lots of pp time and selected 5v5 shifts, to keep him away from unfavourable matchups

I would wager it’s similar to Hutton’s rookie year.

0 pk time, less than 19 mins a night, 2nd unit pp (although I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets bumped up to first as the year rolls on).

This is probably what it will will look like, at least to start. Edler re-signing is a factor in this too.

I'm going to play a bit of devil's advocate and go over something that's been on my mind since we drafted Quinn.

Going into last year's draft, he was ranked 6th and 10th overall by a few publications that I recall. It was a stronger then average draft year, so this puts him on track to be a very good NHLer most likely.

I see most of the forum penciling him into our lineup and treating it like it's almost a certainty that he will be with the Canucks next year.

Looking at some of the top defencemen of the last few years that play a similar style, you see that guys like ...

Torey Krug (3 years college, 1 year AHL)

Erik Karlsson (1 year in Sweden after draft, quarter of the next year in AHL)

Roman Josi (2 years Europe after draft, 2 years AHL)

Kristopher Letang (2 years of Junior after draft, part time of third year in AHL)

Tyson Barrie (2 years of junior after draft, 2 more years of mostly AHL)

Keith Yandle (1 year of junior after draft, 2 years of mostly AHL)

all spent 3 or 4 years in the minor leagues before they became regular NHLers with the exception of Erik Karlsson.

I feel that Quinn Hughes might be looking at 2020 before he's on the Canucks, or he might get the 7 game taste of the NHL next year, but not more.

Why would the play him 7 games if they’re just gunna put him in the NHL? I’m not sure I see the point in that. Kind of an arbitrary number to pick?

As for the idea that he should be in the AHL next season, it’s honestly way to early to be claiming that. Right now he’s one of the top defensemen in the NCAA. There’s no reason to think he won’t be ready next year. Other players like werenski and macavoy only needed 1 extra year of college hockey before they made the NHL. I find it interesting the only players you compared Quinn to were later picks than him and didn’t follow the same development path as him. Kinda ignored all players who made the NHL in their D+2

They have zero prospects at the center position right now. At the time when Gagner was waived the only prospect at center was Gaudette and everyone's playing time could have been managed. I can't believe that Botchford is drinking Benning's Kool Aid.

Not gunna lie I think this is a bit of an over reaction. If not for the injuries on the Canucks, both Gaudette and Gaunce would be on the comets right now. On top of that, Benning went out and got Kero specifically to be a top 6 centre in Utica. Canucks build up so much AHL depth in every position this offseason but injuries to the NHL club have off set that.

Yeah the canucks don’t have many centre prospects (only pettersson, gaudette, and madden coming into the season) but it’s not like Benning left the AHL team bare. Injuries have crippled both clubs, it’s not anyone’s fault

COMETS SIGN GOALTENDER CONNOR LACOUVEE TO A PTO

    Oct 29, 2018

Utica, N.Y. – Utica Comets General Manager Ryan Johnson announced today that the club has signed goaltender Connor LaCouvee to a PTO.

LaCouvee, 24, has appeared in three games this season with the Maine Mariners, holding a 2-0-0 record with a 2.57 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

Prior to turning pro, the Qualicum Beach, B.C. native played four seasons of NCAA hockey spilt between Boston University and Minnesota St. Mankato. He finished his collegiate career with a 36-15-6 record, a 2.19 goals-against average, and a .913 save percentage.

Was going to post this too! I’m probably more excited about this than anyone else on this board lol. I graduated with him in 2012. Haven’t seen him play a game since he was with the port alberni bulldogs. Definitely going to try and tune if he gets a start!

great guy too. His dad is my dentist

Sid, and others, you all know more about prospect development than I so I was hoping you could answer this question for me. I went back a few pages to make sure you didn't already address this but I didn't see the same question or your answers.

For a defenseman in his D+1 year going into the NCAA in his 2nd year, what level of point production would you need to see out of Hughes for you to believe he would be a high end offensive D in the NHL (possibly - I know nothing is a given)?

His 1st NCAA year with Michigan got him 29 points (5g, 24a) in 37 games played or .78 p/gm.

I see that Will Butcher had 37 points in 43 games in his last year of NCAA (.86 p/gm).

Charlie McAvoy had 26 points in 38 games played in his last NCAA year (.68 p/gm).

Torey Krug had 34 points in 38 games played (.89 p/gm).

For Quinn Hughes to be a high end offensive D in the NHL would we not have to see some unreal points / game from him this year at Michigan like 1.2 p/gm??

Thanks for any insight you have!

Edit: the only reason I randomly picked 1.2 p/gm is that both Butcher and Krug are close to .9 p/gm and everyone on here is talking like Hughes will be head and shoulders better than those two players. And quite frankly we all hope he would be.

I don’t think you should put too much into his ppg as defensemen who put up at or near a ppg pace in the NCAA under the age of 20 are all over the map in terms of impact. He should be at ppg but I don’t know how much you can look into it in terms of projection

    Pffft not a chance,

Crosby had 109 points and was only +15 one year

Subban had 51 points in Nashville and was only a +4 one year

    Hedman had 72 points!  Only a +3

Obviously +/- is super important as only one of those players was drafted outside of the top 3

+/- is just an indicator of how sheltered your minutes are

  7. bad night for the baby nucks. they were an adventure in their own end, pk coverage was bad, sub par goaltending, and a whole lot of unforced errors including bad passes and bad penalties. didn't help that wedgewood was having an amazing night in goal for the amerks. oh well, on to the next one

I am not watching the game but wondering if Bachmann is a sieve tonight or is the d coverage been that bad?

D have been having a hard time getting it out of the zone, and coverage is... questionable. however, bachman not coming up with the big saves when they need it and has got beat on clear shots from distance a couple times (nice shots though). Considering how well Kulbakov played over the weekend, it will be interesting to see if they keep bachman as the backup after demko returns. hes not instilling confidence right now

EDIT: I guess to elaborate on this, the first 3 goals (which were all pp goals) should all probably have been saves. the first one was a bit unlucky because it deflected off a player (i think archibald) but Bachman is way out of position when it goes it. I think he overreacted to the initial shot. the second one was a point shot the when through bancks who was trying to block it, but then it went right through bachmans 5 hole and honestly it was a hard shot. he probably would have had no time saving it if he simply went to the butterfly right away. the 3rd goal was a nice outlet pass to spring a ploayer past joulevi (who's positioning was not great on the play) but once again the shot could have been saved. it was a really nice shot but those are the ones you need the goalie to make if you want to win hockey games.

the 4th and 5th goals were just bad defense. Comets lose a puck battle in their own corner and fail to cover the man in the slot (the 4th goal the man in the slot scored, the 5th goal the man in the slot tipped home the point shot.) can't blame bachm,an there. just bad team defense

Future PP QB. You need someone who the opposition has to be wary of at the point.

shot wasn't hard but hes been really good at getting passed the first shotblocker. usually a rebound or tip opportunity is available from his shots. other than a couple bad d-zone positionings, hes had a pretty solid game. definitely Utica's best defnsemen

  10. pretty medicore 1st period for the comets. couple good shifts by archibalds line, and they werent too bad in the last 5 mins besides the penalty. A lot of lazy sticks and bad passes though. This is the first game I've actually watched this season and not just listened to on the radio/followed updates for on twitter. I'm hoping they can improve in the 2nd.

I would prefer to continue to ride with Vancouver now that the prospect pool is deeper.  During last nights Lightning -Nucks telecast  (Tampa feed) they showed that 14 players on the Lightning roster came through the AHL farm in Syracuse.    Nothing more I'd like to do than to tune into a Nucks game and see 14 players that I had watched develop in Utica.

The Canucks currently have 9 former comets on their roster. They’ll probably have 14 total former/current comets play by the end of the season
