  1. Gaudette got off to a horrible start last season when it came to faceoffs, but he did improve as the season went on. In October and November combined of this past season he won only 33 of 111 faceoffs = 29.7%

From December on he won 154 out of 343 faceoffs = 44.9%

In the playoffs he won 46.7% of his faceoffs.

It's still not great, but he did show some improvement in the faceoff department.

  2. About Trade #1, if Canucks were sending Virtanen and Gaudette without Eriksson, they'd probably not get much more than what you suggested coming back our way. Including Eriksson in the trade with both Jake and Adam means Canucks would probably be more likely sending picks with the players to NJ and not receiving anything back just to dump that much cap space.

For Trade #2, I think the Canucks might be able to get a little more in return than what you suggested for taking on 4 years of Johnson at $5 million per.

  3. Seems some are underrating an aging Duncan Keith. Sure he is getting up there in years and he's not as good offensively as he used to be, but over a full season he is still capable of putting up 35 to 40 pts. He can also still log huge minutes, as he averaged over 24 minutes per game in the regular season this year.

  4. I've read through a lot of this thread and I've seen it mentioned several times that Schmidt isn't a top 2 defenseman. Based on his ice time alone over the past 3 regular seasons and playoffs for Vegas he was most certainly a top 2 defenseman for the Knights.

Nate Schmidt average TOI over the past 3 regular seasons and playoffs. The # in parentheses is where he ranked among Vegas players for average time on ice per game.

    2017/18 reg season 22:14/gm (1st)
    2017/18 playoffs 24:09/gm (1st)

    2018/19 reg season 21:57/gm (1st)
    2018/19 playoffs 22:38/gm (4th)

    2019/20 reg season 21:40/gm (2nd)
    2019/20 playoffs 23:01/gm (1st)

Over the last 3 regular seasons Schmidt has 135 takeaways to 135 giveaways which is pretty impressive for a defenseman to be even in the takeaway/giveaway department. Over the last 3 years of playoffs Schmidt has 46 takeaways to 47 giveaways, again pretty impressive.

Current NHL teams can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie, under the following conditions.

You can protect one goalie in either scenario. It says so in the info you posted.

Waste of roster spot, 4th line plug that brings nothing to the team,

Oh I forgot, he brings “intimidation” and keeps opposing players “in check”

Reaves has lead the NHL in hits each of the last two seasons. When Reaves hits it hurts too. I'd love to have that in the playoffs as it can really wear the other team's defense down in a playoff series. He's also posted 54 takeaways to 18 giveaways the last two years, which is a 3 to 1 ratio.

Tree is way better than Stecher.  He’s bigger, and actually skates better.  He’s got better puck skills too.  IMO Stecher is a big liability in our own zone.  He physically just can’t contain anyone.  Pucks bounce in off him because he gets pushed in to bad position.  He’s just way too easy to play against.

Stecher gets no love. He actually leads the team defenseman in goals against per 60 minutes at even strength with just 2.2 goals allowed per 60.

It would mean that Jordie Benn would not have been signed.  Nothing against Jordie... just stating the dominoes.

Canucks are up against the cap as it is. Having Seabrook on our roster at about 6 million would mean that we could not have signed Myers. If the Canucks had Seabrook and Myers (minus Jordie) on our team they would be about $4 million over the cap.

@aGENT if you remember during/after the draft there was a rumour that came out that said Chicago would send us the 3rd overall pick and Seabrook (785,000 retained) for the 10th overall pick, which would have landed us Byram. I would have made that deal then and it looks like it would have been a good move now.

The Canucks would add another elite defensive prospect which we desperately need. Having both him and Hughes on the same defense core would have been unreal, just like how Byram + Makar is going to be unreal.

The trade wouldn't have had a significant impact on our current roster either. Seabrook would have been a 6 million dollar 3rd pairing defenseman, which is exactly what we have right now. Basically, we're in the same spot as we are currently, but with Byram

That was our chance to land him if we really wanted him.

I wouldn't say that's exactly what we have right now. Tyler Myers has actually averaged more even strength ice time per game than any other player on the Canucks so far this season.

    NHL.com has your back:

    Canucks Defense Shot Attempts.png

Note that this is since 2005-06 (though it might be 2007-08 since I'm not sure these were tracked before then) and with a minimum of 100 games played with the Canucks. "SAT For" his shot attempts for and SAT is the net of the for and against.

EDIT: Upon further looking, I'm pretty sure it is since 2009-10, because Edler has exactly 664 games played since then, so I'll re-post my last table since 2009-10, but with other good info:

    Canucks Defense Shooting % II.png

Unfortunately NHL.com doesn't calculate for us what percentage of his shots actually hit the net, but luckily for you, you have your resident stats nerd, AJ to do it for you:

    Canucks Defense Shot %.png

I believe the shot attempts that it's showing on NHL.com are for the entire team when that player was on the ice. Do we really think Edler has averaged 16 shot attempts per game since the 2009/10 season? For instance, Brock Boeser leads the team this year in total shots attempted with 124 in 30 games, which is just over 4 attempts a game.

  11. Keep hearing what an easy schedule the Canucks have had to start this season, but if you combine the records of the teams the Canucks have played thus far against the rest of the NHL(minus their games against Vancouver), it's actually a surprising 85-77-22 for a .522 win%.

Records of teams vs rest of the NHL
    Wsh 10-2-3

    Stl 9-3-2

    Edm 9-4-1

    Fla 7-2-4
    Anh 8-6-1

    Phi 6-5-1
    NYR 5-4-1
    Cal 7-7-2

    LA  5-7 played twice
    Det 4-8-1 played twice
    SJ  4-9-1

    NJ  2-5-4

    --------------------------
    Total record 85-77-22

Canucks will add 64 (!) goals this season and finish the year in the top 5 in scoring with 283 goals. Breakdown of goal totals below:

    Ferland - 17  Petey - 32  Boeser - 35

    Baertschi - 14  Horvat - 29 Miller - 21

    Pearson - 16  Sutter - 12  Virtanen - 18

    Roussell - 8  Beagle - 6  Leivo - 14

    Motte - 7

    Goldobin - 9

    Gaudette - 9

    Schaller - 2

    Edler - 8  Myers - 7

    Hughes - 6  Tanev - 1

    Benn -  4  Stetcher - 4

    Joulevi - 2

    Fantenburg - 1

    Biega  1

Seems almost crazy to say 283 goals in a season for the Canucks but the goals you predicted of each player seems to be realistic. I like it.

My own bold predictions for this season.

3 of Baertschi, Sutter, Tanev, and Edler play 65+ games

    Virtanen scores 20+ goals

    Hughes puts up 40+ points

    Pettersson put up 80+ points

Canucks finish season top 3 in their division with 98 points and make playoffs eventually losing in the 2nd round

  13. I'd waive Loui before I waive Leivo or Motte. I like Leivo as the 13th forward as I feel that he can slot onto any line and do a decent job. Motte definitely earned his place on the 4th line last year and I expect he will continue his hard working style of play. I think Goldy is gonna have to have a great preseason to pass Loui. With Goldobin it seems to be either top 6 or AHL and it looks like he may be hard pressed to crack the top 6 this year in Vancouver. Schaller would probably be first on the list of players to waive.
