  1. Leighton one-year, two-way, has to clear waivers by Wednesday for assignment to Comets. Sautner OTW back up and Brisbois back to Comets.
  2. Canucks appear to have signed G Michael Leighton February 19, 2019, 9:25 AM | Ryan Biech With the Family Day weekend in the rearview mirror, it appears that the Canucks have added some more goaltending depth. Leighton was a professional tryout with the Comets on January 15th and has won his last six straight starts after starting the year at 1-2-0. He is now 7-2-0 with 3.06 GAA and 0.899 SV%. Why there is reason to believe that the Canucks have signed him to a deal is because he was placed on waivers this morning and the organization is waiving him to send him back to the Comets. If he was still on the PTO, then there would be no reason for him to be on waivers. It appears that the Canucks are insulating themselves further in net to ensure that they don’t run into issues for the last parts of the season. With Jacob Markstrom going through some nagging tightness and Thatcher Demko still working his way back from a knee injury, there was no harm in getting some more depth there. Once everyone is healthy, the Canucks will have the Markstrom and Demko tandem in Vancouver and then newly acquired Marek Mazanec and newly signed Michael Leighton for the Comets. That’s if everyone can get back to 100% health. At the very least, they give a stable presence for the Comets in case injuries come back through the Canucks. The official announcement, term, and financials should be released at some point later today.
  3. The Comets arrived in Utica at 2 AM from WB-Scranton while the Monsters arrived at 1:30 AM to their hotel so there can be no excuses there. The highlights don't convey how much this was a tale of two games in one. The Comets have been winning due to collective team effort. The first period was collectively bad team effort. Leighton kept them in the game. They looked like a bad ECHL team compared to the Monsters. They were outshot 19 to 5 in the 1st! Lind, Jasek and Gardiner were standout bad IMO. The team came alive just before the 1st goal by Sifers and dominated the rest of the game with 14-6 and 10-3 SOG. Amerks and Devils next up this weekend.
  4. Baby Pens score on a PP with less than a minute left. Wacey Hamilton with another stupid useless penalty
  5. Hockey fights has it listed but no video yet. Nothing on YouTube.
  6. Win! 4-1 Another team win with youngsters shining. Gadjovich Jasek Kero McEneny Gadjovich nice fight in the last minute.
  7. 5 out 6 points from a 3 in 3 weekend. Comets went ahead mid 3rd period, gave up another deflection in front of Kulbakov and could not capitalize with PP in last 2 minutes. Lost in OT. Crunch lost too so not all lost. LOL
  8. By Ben Birnell Posted at 2:47 PM Zack MacEwen’s hard work has paid off. MacEwen, the 6-foot-5, 211-pound undrafted power forward who has impressed with his game in his second season with the Utica Comets, was recalled by the parent Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. The Comets close a three-game weekend Sunday afternoon with a visit to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. “That’s the goal in the American (Hockey) League,” said MacEwen when asked Saturday if he’s put himself in consideration to be called up. “You want to move on to the next level. It has been a dream of mine to play in the NHL. They have a plan for me and I’m sticking to that. It’s going well right now, so it just keep my nose the grind and keep going.” The move involving the 22-year-old MacEwen comes with Canucks forward Sven Baertschi out with post-concussion symptoms, according to Vancouver. The call-up is well-deserved for the wing, who is coming off his first pro four-point effort Saturday – with his dad, Craig, in attendance -- in the team’s 5-2 victory over Rochester. MacEwen has been one of the Comets’ best players as he’s expanded into a versatile role following a breakout rookie season. MacEwen, a patient net-front presence on the power play and a penalty kill member, has career marks in goals (17), assists (25) and points (42). “It is just opportunity. I’m putting the work in with the coaching staff and any skills I need to and, just working on little details,” MacEwen said. “The coaching staff is good at pointing out little details that improve my game drastically. They give me more time, more confidence and it has really helped me. It is just great to have that support. I think if you put the work in, you’ll be rewarded. That’s the way I’ve always been.” Trent Cull said MacEwen has been more confident in his abilities as he’s developed as a player. “He’s been very much a pro. The work that he put in during the summer has changed his body. He’s done a great job. He’s hungry to learn. He’s a very coachable young man,” Cull said. “But, he’s doing a lot of hard work behind the scenes. He’s doing a better job at (defensive) zone coverage at all times. ... He’s a big, strong guy. When he protects pucks, he’s a tough guy to play against.” MacEwen joins defenseman Guillaume Brisebois on recall with the Canucks, who are dealing with a few injuries including to Thatcher Demko.
