Look at the roster of the best team in the NHL and more than half the roster earned its way via Syracuse of the AHL.  Tampa also makes smart non-draft signings like Barre-Boulet.  Our non-draft signings are sucking in the ECHL.

Can't think of a non drafted signing in the ECHL. Sautner, Chatfield, Eliot, McEneny ( Gillis ? ), Teves, MacEwen come to mind. Who have I missed ?

The AZ pick was the wrench in the draft machine, you could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that pick announced.

Yes, I was so shocked by that pick it threw everything I was expecting to happen out the window lol

I believe that JB stated that 'our' top 7 were all gone after 7 picks. Different order, I'm assuming. I'd think that if that is true, then Hayton could easily have been a Canuck !

  3. Are there any other teams who have dropped every year since this format was introduced ? I'd be surprised if we're the only one ! If we drop again and any other draft losing team does too, I see a big push to revamp this system. Various ideas have been put forth. They are all easy to implement and are much more fair.

My preference is three 'winners'.....#1 moves up 7 slots #2 up 5 slots, #3 up 3 slots.

Turns out he wasn't joking ! Don't really care too much what Flames' fans think !

You have Leivo and Madden on the second line. I like Leivo, but he's not a top-6 player on a team in the hunt for the playoffs; and Madden, while of rising stock, has not demonstrated he has the capacity to play in the NHL, let alone on a line expected to produce in a major way offensively. It's more likely he's not a top-6 guy than that he is.

Have you seen Lind's stat line this year? What about him--other than his draft placement--makes you think he'll just slot perfectly into a third-line role? He is struggling hard rn.

MacEwan does not have an NHL future. Jasek does not have an NHL future. Lockwood could turn into--if he reaches his ceiling--a good third line player; I'll give you that. But Gadjovich does not have an NHL future either, and Karlsson's never going to help much. These are dime-a-dozen prospects you're listing; you think they're good because you're forgetting the scores of similar players we've had in development in past years that haven't planned out. You're going to forget most of these guys, too, because they are forgettable.

Why do you think Sturm is going to be an NHL player? (Have we even signed him? I know there were rumours of Van's interest but don't recall that the team actually signed him.)

Is Gaudette a third-line centre? Maybe, but he's not there yet.

Hell- Woo and Juolevi could both flunk out of professional hockey still, and you have the two of them, along with someone who hasn't even been drafted yet, making up 3/4 of the top-4 in your line-up.

That projected line-up could genuinely compete for worst bottom-9 in the league, and it argues wonderfully for the idea that teams have to acquire assets through trades and free agency in addition to just drafting, lest they become suchlike an abomination.

You're presuming that every young player we have under contract is going to reach their absolute ceiling, which is ridiculous.

Retro 'nuck posts a fair number of armchair gm rosters. He was probably having a 'shiny new toy' moment when he shared this one. Hope springs eternal !

Haha........I owned a Plymouth Breeze. Basically, the same car. Absolute garbage ! Will never touch another Chrysler product.

PS........when I first bought it, I kept finding myself humming JJ Cale's 'Call me the breeze', so there were positive moments.

LA has Mike Richard's recapture penalty on their books (on top of that settlement penalty):  https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/kings

The recapture penalty is in the CBA and it's been approved by the Board of Governors and the NHLPA.  Owners would have to walk back what they have implemented.

Didn't LA get a big 'freebie' with ending a high cost contract ? It may have been Richards too, but I seem to recall them 'getting away' from a tough contractual situation. Giving them two freebies  might have been too much for, even, Bettman. I would be more than surprised if we are not punished for an early NHL exit by Luongo.

  8. Looked like a deer in the headlights on his first shift. A little later, had a nervous half check that could have ended badly. By the end of the game he was playing a solid game. Looks very slight and didn't venture into the offensive side too much. Is definitely behind Brisebois, but a lot of positives !

Do the same math for the Canucks.   If you are an elite Dman, you don't get healthy scratched even in the KHL were the top Dman last season was Philip Larsson (yup, that Philip Larsson).

Not taking sides in this, but are you talking about Philip Larsen ?

i was looking at an old draft book. yakipov’s draft year. he was claimed by all to be a sure fire #1 pick.

Indeed, although 2012 was a very weak draft and there were quite a few misses that year. The Russian factor that concerns me is per our 2002 draft. Our top two picks had one player go home and one player never ( I believe ) show up at a training camp, plus a later pick who never showed up. I get the impression that for a number of Russians, playing in Canada, as opposed to USA, is not their first choice. ( Bure. Nedved, an honourary Russian ). Chubarov, who I loved, left and that has never been explained. There are other, lesser players, who have opted out. Federov, Shirokov and possibly others.

As far as Podkolzin goes, he didn't choose to leave Russia for his draft year, which means nothing, but if he had, it would alleviate some of the Russian concerns that people, like me, have.

one of those draft bloggers said. when he brings it, he is electrifying but when he doesn’t, he is pretty ordinary. he could be wrong. i still love cozens but we’ll probably be picking from 8th to 12th. we are probably looking at zegras, soderstrom or broberg.

    i’m sure we’ll get a good nhl’er, maybe not a great one.

As a huge fan of the draft, especially when we have a top 15/20 pick, I take all the bloggers and social media commentators with a truck load of salt. The top 20 lists for this year have 6/7 players that I have actually seen ( in very small samples ). I doubt these bloggers have seen 75% of the players on their lists. You tube and 2nd/3rd hand reviews is probably where they get their info. Dangerous sources.

In 2013 I got excited about signing Dane Fox. Great numbers. Watched a whole bunch of video of him. Thought we had a future 30+ goal scorer. Didn't make it out of the ECHL and at age 25 has less than exciting numbers in Germany. Hi-lite packages are no way to judge a player. I have my own 'list' of wants and don't wants, but always am aware that I know nothing ( less than nothing ). My big thought about our pick this year..........no Russians !

The same rule applies if he signed an ATO in the AHL for the rest of this season and a one year ELC starting in 2019-20.  His ELC did not have to start this season.

I don't believe that is true. He would be 25. ELC would not be an option. This really isn't an issue. This is the deal that got Teves to sign with us. There are two sides at any contract negotiation. All depends how much JB values the player.

This is complete false news. I know because there were no bad episodes of M*A*S*H*

I consider the final episode of M*A*S*H ( the Alan Alda me, me, me episode ) to be the most disappointing end to a TV series ever. .........and there are/ were some awful final episodes.

Biega's one way deal has nothing to do with whether he is better than Tryamkin or not. It has everything to do with compensating a player for his exceptional dedication, character and work ethic even though for many years he was a healthy scratch and sat out. Biega has that in spades and is an excellent role model for others around him. Tryamkin has not demonstrated those characteristics at all.

    46 minutes ago, WeneedLumme said:

I believe you are right about the reason for Biega's one-way deal, since when he got it he was considered to be a borderline AHL/NHL level player. Tram, however, has already demonstrated that he is full time NHL quality. As his agent points out, the AHL is not even in the conversation at this time.

There is no chance that the Canucks would even offer him a 2-way contract. If he is out of shape, they could send him to Utica for a conditioning stint and he would go. The AHL out clause was in his entry level contract because as an ELC, it was 2-way. His next NHL contract will be one-way. IMO.

I think that there is one more reason for Biega's one way deal. At the time of signing, he was pencilled in as a #7/8 NHL dman or an AHL veteran leader. ( he has played far more than expected ). I think the Canucks felt that a one way contract for 2 years would discourage others from picking him up if we put him on waivers to get him to Utica.

I don't think Tryamkin would ever see time in Utica. He puts bums in seats and is at worst a solid 3rd pairing NHL dman.

The difference would be, was the Flames player already under contract, and then came over mid season? A player has to be under contract by a certain date.

I think in O'Reilly's case, he had an 'opt out' KHL contract ( he was RFA as far as the NHL went ) and then received an offer sheet from the Flames. Colorado matched but could have played hard ball with the waiver factor. As far as being 'too late' in the season to join the team, I'm really not sure. If Teves and Hughes can play with late signings, why not Tryamkin ?

  16. Are there any similarities between a situation where Tryamkin could sign, and play the final few games of the season, and the O'Reiily screw up where Flames would have to waive him ? I think that moving from Europe mid season was a factor. There are probably many differences to consider. It can get complicated !

    Interesting enough

Gud is playing 19.5 minutes a night in Pittsburgh and is a plus 5

A higher talent base and a different defensive scheme

    Different defensive partner

    how else do you explain?

Really hope the current small sample stays true for the long term. The 'no context, ignore the variables' members of analytical heaven will have to really scramble to explain things. This might be their Waterloo ! ( fingers crossed )
