  1. New knickname for Jake, Jake the Cake
  2. Agents always try to max value, that’s their job as their clients representation. And the higher the contract the more they make so it’s a win win for them. Seldom do you see an agent say think long term as they also know a player’s career could be over tomorrow, they want to set them up. I get it, it’s unfortunate but that’s the system.
  3. Often happens with athletes. Those with natural gifts often rest on them and never learn to compete harder because they haven’t had to growing up, they were just that much better physically. It’s also a reason why their game sense often doesn’t develop as well. Counter to that, athletes that aren’t as physically gifted learn that training, out competing, and drive can level the playing field (aka Beiga, Stecher, etc) and they also develop their game sense more because in order to compete, they often have to out think their opponents (because they are not going to compete based on their physical ability, whether that’s size, speed, or strength, or combination.) The truly great players have not only the physical ability but the drive to get better and develop their game sense as well. Ie Crosby, McKinnon, Petey, even Bo. Jake is not at the level of Petey and Bo but if he had their drive, there’s no doubt in my mind he could be as effective as a player like Jake Debrusk for instance. I just hope he decides he wants it enough before his rope is gone here.
  4. Utica should be pretty good just based on our depth. Comments below are from others posts here. Gaudette will be sent down until we move someone like Sutter or there’s an injury, which will be best for his game as he’ll likely be our 1C down there. Hopefully that helps a player like Lind as well. Some said Lind looked quick and was working hard. Juolevi same as Gaudette. Apparently he looks solid just needs some time (Obvious reasons), but positive to hear that he’s looking like the quality we hoped. A few said Mckewan, Chatfield looked good as well. Gadj apparently looked a step behind and it seems unless he deals with this skating (maybe drop some weight) he’s going to be in tough to make this level.
  5. So he’s sluggish and was told to play with AHLers because he’s lighter and being lighter somehow slowed him down and made him winded faster? Huh? Your ability to carry your body weight gets easier as you get lighter. Any athlete who drops 10-15 lbs can feel instantly faster, quicker and has a lot more stamina as his muscles don’t have to carry as much weight , I would think anyone who uses logic would figure this out.
  6. I’m pretty sure given being too heavy and stamina have been issues for Jake in the past, having more weight was not their goal. That’s just common sense. In reality it’s not even about weight it’s about where it’s carried and stamina. Jake’s issue has always been stamina and weight in the wrong areas. I think it’s a safe assumption they would want him to improve there not gain weight.
  7. I’ll trust how Green reacts (as he did) and how he deploys him. That will tell us all. Jake’s not doing himself any favours and he’s not going to breakout by being in the doghouse day one. It’s unprofessional plain and simple. Yep they still skate shoot and score, but you have to have the stamina to stay out for 45 seconds and go hard for the full game and the whole season. If everyone else is training like fiends what happens? You leave the ice after 25 seconds, remember that Jake? I don’t think we need that Jake back
  8. I agree but Buff or even Kessel have proven they can still deliver. I don’t think you can compare Jake to either of those players give their elite status From very early in their careers. And to to be honest, I still think those guys are an embarrassment. You’re a pro athlete, be in the best shape you can be in, and you’ll be the best you can be.
  9. Sure dude, but the game has changed and so have expectations of teammates and the team. Players are training harder, eating smarter and “year round pros” now. The days of Lafleur smoking in the room between periods, Krutov and his Hot Dogs are over. There’s a reason for that expectation, because camp is shorter, competition is stronger, and games are faster and harder. Look, it’s obvious he wasn’t ready for camp. He should have been one of the fittest given his history, his competition and to simply show he’s learned to be a pro. He disappointed the coach, his teammates and fans. Hopefully this is the last time, because if he does it again, he’ll be traded I’m sure of that . i don’t want that, because I want him to “get it” here. But I’m also not going to ignore the issue and pretend it’s not real like many here.
  10. It’s actually about commitment. And if you think Jake has the level of talent in hockey relative to Iverson in basketball I’m not sure what you’re watching. And if you know anything about that video, Iverson as great as he was, was raked over the coals for suggesting he was too good to practice. That’s your defense? Jake’s so good he doesn’t need to be in shape? Lol it seems that you believe it’s ok for Jake to be not be prepared for camp because it’s preseason and he’s so good. Tell that to two hall of famers who’s numbers will be retired this season who were consistently the fittest on the Canucks until they retired, to Bo, Petey, Crosby, McKinnon - I’m sure since they are so much better than Jake they should just come into camp not ready too right? They are some of the fittest and best hockey players to play the game, now and in the past. Why? Why do they care about fitness? Just to beat a test? Or maybe it matters for pro athletes to be in the best shape they can be in? Dude your comments are complete nonsense. Take care.
  11. I agree but he’s probably really embarrassed (which I hope he is and that’s a good thing). I’m sure he also realized how much competition there is and he sees guys like Beagle, Petey, Bo showing up the way they did and maybe the team peer pressure finally hit him. Maybe he’s also realizing he let his teammates down and is losing their respect, they want a player to be his best for the team as well, they want to win. That pressure is probably the best way to force it out of him. This is why vets like the twins and Burr, Beagle, Edler matter. This is why Edmonton busts players, that internal pressure can make players get in line. Let’s hope he learned from this and it sticks. Sad for some fans to not have the chance but he’s done a lot in the community in general.
  12. I think Jake’s family is on here and very angry! Funny how defensive people are about him when it’s reality he didn’t come to camp in shape. As a kid who was 6th overall, was “starting to get it”, and needed to show it had sunk in by training hard in the offseason (especially given the competition for top 6 spots now, and that it’s a contract year), to defend coming into camp out of shape by trying to argue “well they didn’t say it”, is absurd. I guess common sense is not all that common. Wouldn’t it have been nice if he had trained like Bo, Petey, Beagle, came into camp lean, looking like he put in the work, so much so Green was complimenting him and putting him with Petey as a reward? Isn’t that what he should have tried to accomplish? Instead he’s out with minor leaguers first day as punishment, that’s not because he overslept, it’s not because he didn’t watch enough Netflix movies Green wanted him to watch in the offseason. Grab a brain and a dose of reality. Instead people try to pretend they the issue we know is the issue, is not the issue. Maybe Green didn’t elaborate too much because he knows the Vancouver media well enough and doesn’t want to make a bigger stink than needed (aka keep it in house) which is being a good coach. A professional athlete’s offseason goals are fitness related, that’s reality. They test for them day 1. Day 1 it comes out he didn’t meet his goals (he stated it himself). The logic is blatant for anyone willing to accept it. Again, the ONLY offseason goal that a coach has for a player that are tested for on the first day are fitness related, and that’s when this came out. Be silly and put your head in the sand as you please, most rational people know what 2+2 equals. And PS I hoped Jake would be the guy to be on Petey’s wing, he’s got all the tools but he’s clearly not maturing as a professional.
  13. I agree, four years is best but my guess his agent wants the Timo Meir special with the big payday in the last year to make the qualifying offer stupid. If it’s 4 years flat at an aav of 6.5 that’s fine and let him prove he’s worth the big raise down the road. That’s 4 years with Petey, if he believes in himself he should take that in a second.
  14. Is the media gig = “not meeting offseason expectations”? Dude why can’t you people accept that he came to camp out of shape? Does that mean 245 lbs? No, but it means he didn’t commit as he should have in the offseason and as a fan, I for one hoped he had grown up enough to take it seriously like Bo and Petey. He didn’t. It seems those who like Jake think he can’t be criticized, and I like Jake and have since day one and have supported him against a lot of those who bashed him. However I also have common sense and call a spade a spade, and anyone with common sense can infer the issue and see he’s deserving of criticism. It’s quite obvious if you take the blinders off.
