    Fair enough.

For me, my biggest frustration was our mishandling of Nate Schmidt.  The guy was a Norris trophy candidate just a few short seasons ago, and clearly thrives playing on the right side in a more offensive capacity with a defensively responsible partner.

Atleast from my perspective, the Canucks should be doing whatever they can to create that perfect scenario for Schmidt.  Hence, my ideas for preemptively bringing in Hampus Lindholm (sign and trade to us), or even re-exploring the OEL deal.

Watching the misuse of Schmidt this year was one of the most disappointing things that I’ve ever witnessed as a Canucks fan.

If Seattle takes Holtby, and we get buyouts for Loui and JV, there should be 7-8m with which to sign a shutdown defenseman + a 3C.
Juolevi looks like hes going to develop into a defensive defenceman too. Should help make Giraffe more effective as he develops.

    Schmidt-Lindholm/Savard
    Giraffe-Juolevi
    Hughes-???

Makes me wonder where Rathbone fits into this picture. Maybe we deal Myers at the deadline to a contender in exchange for some picks, and Rathbone takes his place? Woo could be ready within the next couple of years as well to take on some stay at home responsibilities.

    Schmidt-Lindholm
    Rathbone-Woo
    Hughes-Juolevi

Juolevi, Woo, and Rathbone all have a good chance of contributing more value than their salaries would suggest over the next 2 years. We're already locked into phenomenal $ value in our goaltending (a good 5-6m under value if you have Demko as the starter and DiPietro on an ELC as backup). Imagine how much $ we'll be able to spend on bolstering the top 9 after next year!!

Pass on Reinhart. We already did this trade for Miller.

Rather have the top 10 pick. If he can be had without a first involved I am all for it but that is doubtful.

Draft Lysell/Guenther if you want a RW that would probably be with us longer.

I bet Guenther is gone by the time our pick rolls around.
Im still choked we passed on Caufield, so getting Guenther would make me very happy.

I think people will actually be shocked this year with how many picks get moved down this year.

I think Seattle will end up with 4th and look to move down. I could see vancouver taking advantage of that to move up and steal Hughes from NJD.

Seattle is going to want to show something in their first year. for that they will need an nhl player but they will want some that are young with offensive plus side. I think the player that fits that mold who vancouver could trade would be Juolevi. so I think Vancouver could trade something like:

    To Van:

4th overall + Wink Wink Deal to take Brayden Holtby at the expansion draft

    To Seattle:

    Van 1st + Oli Juolevi

    Canucks Draft Hughes.

It has been a weird year. Scouts have not been able to watch many players play hockey so they know that "their guy" will likely fall. There will be a lot of movement.

along with signing hughes Canucks fire Benning and Green.

With no Benning around the New GM will look to make his stamp on the team and  move out some older pieces.

First thing it was reported a while ago that lots of teams were interested in Beagle. I think the new GM would move him out for money.

2nd thing I think Virtanen and ferland will be off the books.

The new Gm will likely want to keep Hughes and Pettersson here long term so i expect a decently high contract number for both... maybe 8 mil each.

holtby will be off the books

    Likely buy out Eriksson

With all these moves the GM will have some money to sign pretty big player in free agency. I think that player will be RNH.

I think the New GM will also go after Nikita Gusev to help Podkozin come in. I could also see them getting Grigorenko as well.

Edler comes back with a 1 year 1 mil to finish things in van.

    sign a decent back up

finally fill the bottom C role with a hard nosed C in Cedric Paquette.

    Miller Pettersson Boeser

    Pearson Horvat Hoglander

    Gusev Grigorenko Podkolzin

    Gadjovich Paquette Macewen

    Hughes Hamonic

    Edler Schmidt

    Rathbone Chatfield

    Demko

    Back up

    just my fantasy approach

Huh, I didn't realize Luke is 6'2". If he's another Quinn clone, I think we'll have too many offense-minded powerplay specialists, but if his game is more defensive, I love that plan. We could at some point have: Q Hughes, L Hughes, Rathbone, Schmidt, Myers all playing together. That's got to be one of the most talented offensive D-corps in the league.

  4. I dont think itll be as bad as people think next year.

Theres enough contracts falling off to easily make room for Petey & Hughes.

Buyout virtanen + Louie gives us about 4m.
If JB gets creative this offseason, finding a way to move Beagle or convincing Seattle to take Holtby, thats another 3-4m of space.
We can get a decent shutdown defenseman and a 3c (or bring back sutter for less $ and spend more to get a true #1 defenseman).

Practice time + everyone healthy + rookies taking the next step + improvements on D and 3C could mean a very different looking year.

Demko at 5m + DiPietro at ELC for the next 3 years saves us 5-8m a year, compared to what other teams are paying for equivalent goaltending.
Hogs, Podz, Boner at ELCs will give us incredibly good value for scoring punch. If JB can lock in good deals on Petey and Hughes bridge deals, we could be in the best position cap-wise in 2022 out of any team in the league.

  5. 14.5m coming off between Sutter, Edler, Vesey, Baer, Spooner. Enough for the Hughes/Petterson bridge deals

If Seattle takes Holtby we could be in good shape. Add in JV and LE buyouts and that's 8m+ room to get a quality shutdown defenseman & a 3C.

Pettersson back + Hoglander taking the next step should help Line 1/2 scoring.
Better 3C (or Sutter coming back healthy for a lot less $) + Beagle returning from injury, combined with a top shutdown defenseman should help our goals against. Not to mention Demko taking the next step.

I think we'll be pleasantly surprised by next year assuming the above happens.

Another 10m+ opens up for 2022, at least 2 of which goes to BBs new contract. Bad contracts will be gone, great young players on ELCs, franchise players will still be on their bridge contracts. Thats when we mortgage the future and trade picks & prospects to contend.
