  1. Can anyone who actually knows about this kid answer me this question: Is Leipsic fast? I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, I don't really feel like reading through 9 pages. I had definitely heard of him in the last few years as a prospect when he was with the Leafs, but I am no expert when it comes to every prospect in the game. Immediately after we traded for him the guy giving the scouting report on 650 deemed him to be a slow and small yet crafty, competitve, and fun to watch player---unlike anyone else in the league. Then in his presser, JB was calling him fast. I've read other posters in other threads call him fast too. So what is it? It is unusual to hear one scouting report call him slow and then others on the same day call him fast... can't say I have ever heard such a stark contrast in such a short period of time before.

To be fair, Erik Karlsson was a high-risk high-reward pick just like Liljegren. He could have easily been a terrible defenceman. At draft day it's hard to really tell but I believe a lot of what we see on the ice 5 years down the line depends on their attitude, motivation and willingness to learn and improve themselves. That's probably why JB picked Pettersson, and probably why all these high risky players pan out - because of their character.

Vilardi and Liljegren slide down the list for whatever reason but one can only assume it's due to bad interviews or character. They're both risky picks, especially Liljegren, but I'd burn a late 1st round pick on him in a heart-beat. Different GMs of course do different things but the way I think of it, I'd rather a safe pick with a top-10 pick and save the risky ones for later on.

I keep hearing about how Vilardi has horrible character and must have tanked his interviews....his post draft interview said otherwise. He came across as very happy go lucky and down to earth. I am not saying that automatically means he has a good attitude when it comes to hockey but I really don't see poor interviews being the reason he slid.

One hundred percent true and also blows any fallacy out of the water that the ownership group is only doing this for playoff revenue.

That math wouldn't add up. It costs more money in bonuses for this deal than they would make in a few home games.

Frankly speaking, the Aquilinis are never hesitant to invest money in this team. Any argument to the contrary isn't logically based.

its not just about playoff revenue, its about selling season tickets. People wanna watch good hockey.

One thing I think people might be missing regarding this contract - and imo it's somewhat important - is that it is reportedly heavily front loaded.

Meaning the bulk of the money will be paid out in the early years  - and in the last few, when the limited no trade applies, there will be a significant gap between salary and cap hit.

So it facilitates trading that cap hit to a cash strapped franchise that may use it to get to the floor.  A  bit of a forward looking aspect that could give them more flexibility if they need to move his contract.

He has a modified ntc then (the details are still murky but its likely a 5 team list or something of that nature). What if he doesn't want to go to phoenix or another such team???

Everyone should be forced to understand this before hitting "reply".

i do understand giving him 6 years was a condition of him signing. Doesn't automatically make it a good move just because we need offensive help. Maybe we would be better off signing someone else to a shorter term deal.

did we give him a NMC too? Cause that will likely cost us an asset in the expansion draft as well. Are people okay with giving up a Jannik Hansen to make this signing happen... time will tell

To make the playoffs, we need to score at least 220 to 230 goals.

We scored 191 last season. Eriksson immediately adds 25-35 goals, giving us about 220 goals. If there is improvements from the young players and if the Sedins produce a bit better, we might make the playoffs.

adding a 25-35 goal scorer doesn't just net you that many goals... we also had someone playing in his spot last year.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about this pick. Top 4 dmen are much more valuable than top 6 wingers.

I don't know why everyone throws out terms like top 4 dmen and top 6 wingers.... got vague?

  8. What? Seriously. What really dumb thing are you attempting to insinuate?

That he didnt pay his front office dues like a lot of other successful recent player to exec transitions. Yzerman, Sakic and Blake come to mind.

Linden had nothing to do with hockey after he retired. He was brought back to life by the Aqs in a PR move to appease the angry mob after the side show this team became after Lu and Kes media fiascos. He went from hosting the telethon to being president of hockey ops.

Had he paid his dues in the hockey world, like Markus Naslund has been doing with Modo, then I would respect him more.

Sorry if that logic is 'really dumb'
