  1. Very sad day.

Most won’t recognize me because I don’t talk much, but signed up in ‘05  and am here literally every day listening to what you all have to say.

Thanks to each one for making this such a wonderful place.

Hopeful to see you at the new spot.

This is why his shooting % IS sustainable. Because 90% of his goals are tap ins. It's like in golf comparing an 18 foot put to a 1 inch put, they both count as 1 stroke. But the 1 Inch put is going to be sunk 100% of the time.

We've obviously never done 18 together.

Us old guys know weird too.

Babcock is a creep and should be banned from all positions of authority.

I'm no spring chicken anymore either, but there are things that happened in the 80s that seemed entirely appropriate, even friendly and engaging - and nobody would've been able to fathom how they could be misconstrued, but now they're friggin' weird.

Remember everybody freaking out about Biden rubbing girls shoulders and stuff? He's just old. Suuuuper creepy, but not ill-intentiond, he's just old and the world changed.

It's worth of note that Blueger's contract is only one year. The plan may be to give Aman a year to stew in Abby to see if he takes a big step in a big role there, especially in face-offs and other defensive metrics. Doing so may earn him the 4C spot behind Suter for 2024-25.

Despite Bleuger only being one year it’s nice to have some C depth.

We have four legit nhl centres as well as a couple tweeners in case of injury (dries, aman)

And even a couple prospects that may push for top 6, middle 6, bottom 6 spots within a couple years (Raty, Sasson)

  5. It sounds to me like both sides of this story are 100% true.

There's an old dude legitimately trying to be chummy and says, 'hey it would be nicer to see those tiny pictures on the big screen, and they even learned me how to do that technology'.

There are members of a younger generation that feel weird about that, because it's legitimately a little weird.

Intentions and the way they are received can be very different, especially with regard to generational stuff. No chance my dad could tell you why this was weird.

Bonino never played for an original 6 team. However, both Bure and Naslund played for the Rangers. Linden also played for Montreal. So I’d go:

    Naslund    Pettersson    Bure

    Hughes    Snepsts

We don’t have many stars from the 70’s, especially on defence. Snepsts was one of my favourites though.

Yes, Naslund would be a big upgrade on Bonino!

Unfortunately, the rule is it has to be someone currently playing for an Original 6. Bonino signed with the Rangers in free agency, and is one of only two actual hockey players I could find (Dickinson being the other and Brogan Rafferty being a third).

I guess Kearns was sort of a 70's Hughes, but that's before my time and I don't remember him.

Kearns Ohlund could be good on D. Then Pettersson or Henrik could still be One Org rather than the Swedish requirement.

I think I'd prefer Hughes Snepsts though.

Now to make it more interesting, how about only with Canucks?

Bonino (Original 6)  -  Pettersson (Swedish born)   -   Bure (300 goals)

Hughes (One organization)   -    Snepsts (Played in the 70's)

Some nice players available at every spot, except Original 6 is a tough one. I could only find Dickinson and Rafferty besides Bonino.

Must have been from the 2000's.   Who was he going up against, Rafalski?   Or Phanuef?   Maybe   Niedermayer.  Only time Lidstrom was a PPG, was at 35, year after the lockout and rule changes,  scored 80 in 80.   There is a pretty long list of guys who scored at a higher clip over their careers.   He's 18th behind Gary Suter.    Erik Karlsson is currently 8th.     Yes he scored a lot of career points, he also played the 6th most games all-time.   Orr is so ahead of everyone else it's not even close, although Coffey did pace him in same games played.    Borque wouldn't be a bad pick either, can use him for goals and Orr for 70's.    Defensively and physically Robinson >>  offensively close.

Lidstrom is a lock for Swedish player, unless you need a goalie.   Then Lundqvist.    But for sure you could make better pairings without rules as well.  Borque/Potvin for sure.   Robinson, Al Mac, Coffey.  Maybe Harvey all worthy of consideration.     Lidstrom couldn't win until the old guard retired.   Just had Neidermayer and Pronger left.   Not really the same.    Lidstrom did everything well, but nothing at the highest  levels, and hard hitting wasn't part of his game.    Potvin could crush you, take the puck and score.  Same with Orr and Borque (who was 230 at the latter part of his career, and thick when he started).

Borque was better than Lidstrom.  13 first, six second all-star team berths.   For 18 of his 22 seasons considered a top 1-4 D against a lot stiffer competition.  Never lower than 7th in Norris voting, and those were some bad Boston teams, why he went to COL.    Then second in Norris his final season...Potvin,  19 consecutive playoff series forced him into retirement at 34,  Bossy followed suit, was also tough on him.   Gretzky said Potvin was the scariest player he ever played against.   Would never go down his side, was either going to get creamed or stripped of the puck and then they'd go down and score.  Nobody feared for their well-being going in against Lidstrom other than getting embarrassed maybe.   Konstantinov was scary.

Agree THN probably likely said that more than once.   Lidstrom was just the best of what was left.  Rafalski was second in D scoring in the 2000's.   Yikes.

Took Lidstrom 504 games, to score 90 more points than Potvin. Potvin scored 310 goals ... 46 more in 504 less games.    He was a monster.   The best player on one of the greatest teams ever.

No question that Orr is a lock.

And Lidstrom the lock for Swedish player as you've said. Like Matthews from my list, he's the throw-away because I want someone steady with Orr. If I choose Borque or Coffey or Potvin I don't get to use 300 Goals on Gretzky ( and I don't really need another offense-first Dman).

I'm pretty comfortable with Matthews and Lidstrom as my throwaways when they're playing with Gretzky, Mario and Orr.

My thought process was look at who the best players currently playing for Original 6 franchises are. So basically a choice of Matthews vs Marner vs Pastrnak vs Fox vs McAvoy vs Panarin (ignoring goalies).

Then there's the choice of best Swedish player in history. Probably comes down to Lidstrom vs Forsberg with some consideration to Salming and maybe Kent Nilsson.

Gretzky and Orr are locks, and Lemieux probably should be (unless you feel what McDavid is doing is more impressive). I think Lidstrom and Forsberg are both better than the current Original 6 options, so you can just decide which Original 6 option is the least downgrade and then pick the other Swede.

Agreed on Original 6 - I just think that you're expecting Gretzky, Orr, etc to be in their prime, so a current player could also be in their prime which legitimately puts Patrick Kane into the discussion (he was insanely dominant with Kesler in that one Olympics) even though I still opted with Matthews.

Agreed also on Swedish - I just remember as a kid reading the Hockey News and one year they called Lidstrom the league's best Defensive Defenceman, then in the next category he also won for the league's best Offensive Defenceman. So him and Orr have got to be the best D pairing in history.

I'd rather have Lidstrom than Fox, and the downgrade in Matthews is essentially a throw-away that can still play 2-way hockey while scoring 60 goals (even before Gretzky is passing to him!).

    Lemieux Gretzky Matthews

    Lidstrom Orr

I think that's the final answer, cause how do you beat that?

Maybe McDavid subs in for Lemieux for 1 organization? Don't think so.

Maybe Kane (prime) or Pastrnak sub in for Matthews for Original 6? Maybe Pastrnak scores more or Kane has more playoff success, but Matthews is a legit 2-way player.

I asked r/DetroitRedWings what they thought of Hronek. Some interesting thoughts and opinions from those who know him better than we do:

Thanks for doing that, it was a good read!

Felt to me like the responses we would have gotten from a Sharks board when Ehrhoff came over.

  12. Here's what I've heard Dave Ramsey blathering on about for years - basically he calls one a necessary, smart investment and the other a total scam.

I don't know or care enough to think much about it, I just bought Term and forgot about it.

    https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/insurance/life/articles/dave-ramsey-says-this-type-of-life-insurance-is-a-way-to-screw-people-and-hes-right/

I think one of the key points is that they don't really give you your 'investment' back. Again I haven't looked into it for myself, but this article repeats:

And here's what Ramsey calls one of the worst parts of whole life insurance -- there's no getting both the death benefit and the cash value of your policy. When you die and the insurance company pays the death benefit, it keeps your policy's cash value. Or, if you cash out your policy, then there's no death benefit.

  13. I was a fan of Gretzky since I was about five. I read everything I could about him when I was young.

I've spent some time looking at the Top 100 point scorers of all time. Of course points aren't everything, but when you look through the names of the absolute studs, superstars and generational talents of our game's history something stands out to me.

All of the top superstars are bunched together - sometimes 10 points, sometimes 4 points, sometimes 0 points separating one great from the next.

As we get into the top 10 there are a couple of notable jumps. But all the separation from 100 (Kariya) to 2 (Jagr) isn't as great as from 2 to 1.

Here's a graph of how that looks:

    Sedin/Sedin/Smyl      $12

    Beieksa/Salo               $2

    MClean                       $3

Bieksa and Salo, along with Smyl are under rated by at least $1 and more likely $2  imo.

Oh yeah - Smyl on the wing at a point a game and legit snarl/heart is big value.

No Sedins would have been getting speed-bagged

The best chance at winning a Cup (not my prefer choices).

    Naslund - Morrison - Bertuzzi

    Hamhuis - Salo

    Luongo

Luongo in net + the duo of Hamhuis and Salo offsets the WCE lack of defensive acumen.

    The team that I prefer.

    Ronning - Linden - Mogilny

    Lumme - Salo

    Luongo

That's not a bad point - WCE came close to getting it done when they had Cloutier in net and Bertuzzi out of the lineup (one goal away from beating Calgary who took Tampa to game 7).

A truly great goalie probably puts them over the top.

I hate this "legit #1 D man" narrative. How many true legit #1 D men are there ? Many of these guys, like PK Subban, Shea Weber or Ryan Suter get mega hyped and then sign to insane max contracts. We know how those turned out. Erik Karrlson too. Doughty has recovered his value a bit but he has been on the worst contract lists for the las few years.

But it is true that there is some that hit the target in every way. Like Victor Hedman. But how many Hedmans are there really ?

On defense, the value is not in the true #1 D men. It is the guys just underneath. Like most of the D men on the 2011 Canucks team. Hamhuis Bieksa , Edler Erhoff.

I think Hronek is trending in that 2011 D man range and thats exactly what we want

This is a pretty good take.

Especially, because we actually have a legit #1D man (even if he doesn't fit a Chris Pronger type of definition).

Hronek should absolutely be a Hamhuis, Bieksa, Edler guy which is exactly what we need.

Buddy why isnt the process the same for everyone? You have yet to answer why guys like Boeser never went through ANY of “the process” his defensive game is weak (however Tocchet has had an impact on him changing his game now) yet has been stapled to the top 6 and soaks up PP 1 time. Why??? BECAUSE HES A GOAL SCORER NOT A DZONE SPECIALIST

you place players in positions to succeed, not to fail. Virtanen was never placed in a place to have a ton of success, yet he continued to produce and they continued to take away offensive opportunities to produce and he kept on producing and they took more and more away and gave him worse linemates and in his final season playing 12:15 a night with a 16% reduction in offensive zone distribution aka 39%oZS playing with 00:36average PP time and playing with a constant mix of different players, some in the top 6, but mostly in a blender in the bottom 6, he began to fail at producing.

You reward production YOU DONT BURY PRODUCTION. To win you gotta score. Why take away any further opportunities for the team to score? Look around the league man, its FULL of top 6 guys with zero defensive game. He’s also a W not a C, centre’s have far more impact in the dzone than wingers.
The process is for guys who struggle to produce with top 6 opportunities and PP time, show no progression, not guys who are literally showing year by year improvement without ANY help towards producing.

Dude, despite all your CAPS LOCK EMPHASIS he keeps getting opportunities to this day.

He got an opportunity with Edmonton last year.

After not cutting it there, he got another opportunity in the B-league of Switzerland.

To his credit, he finally became a point-per-game player there now in the prime of his career.

  18. 37 minutes ago, DrJockitch said:

It is more that they are small, offensive minded wingers who aren’t great defensively. Not the building of a classic grind line.

it would be like an even-more-classic version of a third line where it can actually score rather than just "bring energy".

Despite the cap inefficiency, I kind of like both Garland and Beauvilleur on the third line - assuming whoever plays at C can work with them to create offense.

If that third line had three players all around 35-40 points, I'd say a good offense is the best defence.
