He definitely won't need 4 more years until he cracks the lineup.

There's no guarantee he's a star , hopefully. We're so thin on high end prospects.

He's doing really well. I really think he'll make the team next year. He's a real solid defenceman. He won't wow by no means but he just puts up points. This makes Tanev expendable imo.

It may change but Tanev is our best defensemen just entering his best years as a player. I think trading him now is a bad idea. Especially not for Brisebois just because he's doing fairly well in junior.

Burrows will be gone this year. Likely at TDL.

Hansen next year. Likely at TDL.

I'd like to see Tanev moved before his NTC kicks in this summer.

Edler will likely be moved in the next couple years.

Does that leave anyone but the future HOF twins with NMC's?

Just because you and LB don't like how they're rebuilding or the time line, doesn't mean it's not happening.

I think Taney has the skating and puck moving we're looking for. I'd keep him.

Would the trade (as silly as it is) make us better up front, right now? The key in the entire deal (for me) is getting Sam Reinhart.  I see him as a replacement for Henrik, and in time being an excellent one two punch at center with Bo.

I can see what you mean, but hasn't Kane been a cancer for every team he's played for?

Tanev + Boeser for Kane and Reinhart?

would we do that?  It's painful to think of, but is it fair?

Why even think of trading our best young d-man and best prospect when we're trying to develop?  He's our draft and we'll sign him.

  6. Today the best teams have smart mobile D who move the puck and join the offence. We can take for some top nine forwards but the best d aren't usually found in trades. Juolevi is a good piece of the puzzle but we're not done setting up our D

Whether or not he can be an impact NHLer is all going to come down to how mobile he is - stride, first step, lateral quickness, etc. And, perhaps, just importantly, how fast he can pivot and how good his gap control is.

The game is getting faster by the season; there are far fewer big defenders who are slow than there use to be. I would guess that trend will continue. Hopefully his time playing on bigger ice will help to offset the fast speed of the NHL. It would be a tremendous win if he works out.

True the game is getting faster, but the last time i watched the playoffs the refs put away the whistles and d-men could hack and whack at anyone who came near the crease. Chara can't skate. But he could practically be called for penalties almost every shift in the playoffs and it works for him.

  8. Watching Gaunce outplay Virtanen last night perfectly explains why Virtanen needs to go back to junior. He needs more skill and he needs to process the game more effectively. You get that from playing big minutes in every situation. Not playing sheltered minutes and running around trying to lay out players on every shift. He's got one assist in eight games and hasn't looked dangerous. That's not what I expect from my top ten draft pick. Virtanen could be good some day, he's got the toolbox, but right now all I see is size, speed. Add some skills to those elements and you have an NHL forward.

  9. Send him down and make him work on his skills. It's great to be big fast player who can through a body check, but that isn't top six material, that's a good checking line player. He was chosen 6th overall, let develop into a skilled player with physical assets.

  10. Hopefully come next year, we won't have to imagine. :) I'm in what seems to be the minority of people who wants Lucic here next year, so long as the contract isn't nuts. I think he could add a lot even away from his play on the ice. I would be more than happy seeing Lucic mentor Virt.

Lucic is slow, has hands of stone. We don't need caveman hockey. What is he going to teach Virtanen? How to spear a player in the pills from behind? run a few goalies? miss open nets? If he was any good, he'd still be in Boston.

  11. Baertschi shows speed, good hands, and finish. He can set up plays and doesn't shy away from contact. He's a skill upgrade for this team and he's young. It looks like the Flames tried to us him as a bottom six type grinder and he doesn't fit that role. Then they gave up on him too soon. Let the kid play to his strengths, he'll develop a more complete game, enjoy the fact we got ourselves a good young player at a good price. He'll be stoked to play Calgary, this could be a good series.

  12. Benning has to be showing at least some concern that when stepping up a grade Virtanen hasn't shown much. The WJC when compared to WHL is faster. I assume Benning is attending the WJC and is wondering where the great shooters shots have disapeared to. I like his physicallity but that doesn't replace scoring.

He recently turned 18 and is a top 6 forward on the Junior team. Isn't that stepping up? The kid's showing and elite set of tools, it's one tournament and he's looking good.

  13. He's skilled but his skill isn't anything to write home about, Every player needs some skill to be taken in the first and second rounds, however that is not the aspect of his game that could be considered his 'strong' side.

Cue a poster posting a highlight reel vid of flashes of skill. It's simply not his forte, especially at the position he was taken at... And that is not to say that he won't succeed. Like other posters said, he has size and a good shot but don't go propping up his skill when that's not where he excels at.

Skating is a skill and he's the best skater in his draft year.

  14. Oh, I'm sorry. I thought the title of the OP was "collective feeling on Tort's antics ?" not " does fighting have a place in todays NHL ?". Try to stay on topic... ya putz

Maybe you missed the news sparky, but the entire event, including Tort's antics, turns on fighting. So yeah, that IS the topic.

  15. No doubt about it, the Kings looked rattled. With almost a period in penalties the 'Nucks still out shot them. That was a great effort and I hope we took some notes on how to play the Kings. But for one bad bounce they outplayed them. I especially like how Doughty didn't want to hold onto the puck like he often does. He was getting rid of it sooner than later. Nolan wins the prize for most spineless. I think the Kings are rushing up my list of most classless team. Run the Sedins, run the goalie, then run away.

  16. Two thoughts: we may have hit the jackpot with Tanev he's still young and he just keeps getting better and better. And Kassian might just start earning top six minutes, he's starting to get it. Oh yeah, and does Mark Lee really have to cheer for the Kings so openly? OK lastly, I want to go on the fan tour to LA and Anaheim next year.
