Wow, absolute MONSTER trade but not surprised. Dubas is making big moves and is IMO massively under-rated, everyone hates him because of his baby face and focus on analytics but the guy can make the important trades the team needs and somehow makes these deals go through like no other GM. We struggle to flip a young middle-6 winger and Dubas finds a way to trade for a Norris winner with a massive cap hit on a team with no cap space.
SJS barely retain any cap and the Pens retain a bit on Petry but obviously moving Granlund is huge. He's acquired Graves and Karlsson in one off-season somehow.
Like him or dislike him, you have to respect that hustle. Doesn't even seem like Pittsburgh paid that much - they lose Petry, Ruuta, a 1st and 2nd, but off-load Granlund and get the best defenceman in the league.
It's a risky play, I quite liked Pittsburgh's defence going into next year but Petry clearly wanted out and they didn't want to give Granlund another chance. I think he will get back to his 40-60pt scoring pace on a new team but Dubas had seen enough, acquires Eller and moves on from him.
That might be the best top-end team in the league right now, I know they're all getting older but look at that core - Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Karlsson, Letang, Graves, Pettersson. Two of the league's best puck movers, two solid defensive defencemen...
Their obvious weaknesses are depth and maybe goaltending depending on how Jarry lasts and it'll be interesting to see how Karlsson plays on a different team with structure - his point totals will get shattered in a bad way because he'll have to play with more structure and won't be allowed to just free-wheel (or will he?), but I expect he'll have another massive year - maybe in the 70-80pt range.Penguins go from outside a playoff spot to a contender in one off-season.
Dubas made a mess, left a mess in TO. How can you possibly say he's underrated? He's accomplished nothing, literally nothing.

A staggering gain of an offensive defenceman who can't defend. Like most of Dubas' defencemen.
100 percent. EK fans, please name teams that win in the playoffs, cups, with one dimensional D taking up that much cap space. Dumb

Oh boy. Too much and too long for a player who's starting to break down.
Good player, but yikes.

There have been some excellent CFL games of late. That was not one of them. Wins a win though.

Should of kept the name Eskimos. Bad karma for changing the name for no real reason.

Yeah Dumba is another overpriced contract like the last 3 defense we just signed when there is youth in the pipeline who dont have room to get up in it
I agree, I don't want Dumba. But I couldn't disagree more with the rest of your post.

Well said. All the above are absolute trash and belong in the AHL.
Lol. I'm not as harsh as you on these types Heffy. But I'm definitely not a fan. It's there to see, it's obvious. Successful playoff teams just don't run with these types of dmen.

Not me. Not a reflection on Benson, I just get a good vibe from Willander. Love how he switched to D only a few years ago and is trending upwards. His skating and vision are there, size. There's easily as much to get excited about as Benson. In the end if Benson is a top six forward and Willander is a top four righty, both regulars in the NHL, I'd take the righty D everytime.

Right... only... Dumba didn't play on the powerplay last year. At all. But he did play extensive minutes on the PK. He blocked a ton of shots, and his shorthanded metrics were actually pretty good last year. I mentioned it in my earlier post - if penalty killing is all you want, Dumba is actually an upgrade to someone like Myers.
I gotta admit, I'm not a graph guy. Percentages on beer cans are the depth of my math abilities. Our PK was trash for sure, it needs help. Just not a Dumba fan.

Believe we have two contract spots open, and a few tricks up our sleeve to fit another small salary into our roster

Yip. Or maybe one of our depth wingers in the mix for some kind or D depth.

Exactly. Given how bad our PK was last year. And the overall inability to defend. I'd rather get cheap stay at home defencemen than a PP specialist.
Yip. Maybe management waiting for preseason for a depth waiver pickup

Then offer him a contract that befits his current ability. Something close to $1.5M, one year. Take it or leave it. I'd be okay with that deal as a fan.
Had Dumbs become a UFA next year, some team would've offered him 3 x $3.5M. He obviously wants to pick his next team wisely so that dream can become a lucrative reality.
I hear what your saying and if JB were still here he would sign Dumba to some stupid contract. I believe this current management knows what wins in playoffs and are building towards it. Dumba doesn't fit that mold.

That's the thing. I think Dumba, because he's scored some points, thinks he's worth way more and won't sign cheap. I'm just not a fan of these "score some points, crap in my end" dmen. Bouchard, Barrie, Rielly, Klingerg, Dumba, etc. Teams don't win in the playoffs with these guys. They are fluff.

Not unlike OEL, nobody would've complained if Myers was earning less than $2M. Dumba is right-handed - that's pretty much what we need. There are no other RHD UFAs out there, unless you count Cal Foote (who nobody wants) or Ethan Bear (who nobody wants). Our depth chart for right handed D-men goes Hronek, Myers, Juulsen... and then who? McWard? Woo?
Not unlike a lot of teams that lack right side depth. Yet this player remains unsigned. He's crap at D, yet seems to want a contract ubefitting. Meh, a depth dman till he proves otherwise imho.

Not at all what this team needs. Another Myers type.

On the right team. Canucks are too smallish to add another small player.

For sure. NHL has a problem with the low tax states having an advantage.

No you don't. You also pay for potential. There's simply no way Petey will sign on the dotted line at $9.5 or $10M. If you were him, would you?
Yip. EP is in at 11 minimum, probably 11.5. People need to just compare the possible centers out there you would trade Petey for one for one. Pretty slim pickings. He's worth it.

Lol, and AM thinks he's worth 13.5 on a short term? Almost 4 million per year more? On a short term? Laffable.

Heck of a hockey player. That fan base didn't deserve such class on their team.

[3-Way Trade] Penguins acquire Erik Karlsson, Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd-round pick; Sharks acquire Mikael Granlund, Jan Rutta, Mike Hoffman, 2024 1st-round pick; Canadiens acquire Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, Nathan Legare, 2025 2nd-round pick

That's it? Lol. Aged out Ontario boy is the example you pull out? Lol. Yikes. I get it though, as Dubas resume gives you slim pickings. Trading a bargain, feisty, second line center Kadri for another useless in his own zone D like Barrie sounds similar to today's acquisition. Dubas was terrible.
