This is actually Valley wide right now.  it is more a crisis than an HR issue.

The Okanagan is the exact place I factor in and speak about regarding corporate ownership and owned homes.  Every single available rental is literally short term.  6 month or straight Air BnB.  I saw a 2 bed 1 bath in penticton renting for $6000 a month through the summer, either outright or at X per day or XY per week.

People will not even list the price of places anymore as they don't want the heat and hate they get

There is NOWHERE for people to live here.  Let alone pay the usurious rental rates of $1600+ per 1 bedroom where the average post tax income is less than $2500 per month when they will have to come up with a large damage deposit knowing they will be doing the exact same thing again 6 months down the road..

First image is an example of a corporate owned rental unit.

Second image of a studio suite in kelowna

3rd image is the $6k place in penticton (listing individual changed the price as it was getting heated)

Where are people going to live?  most of the interior health boards work force right now is being comprised of travelling nurses.  Health care professionals paid more than the normal full time staff PLUS lodging and meals to work here, thus driving the cost of health care up.  People can not maintain this.  It is literally unsustainable.  Go on to any air bnb listing or vrbo for penticton, vernon or kelowna and check out how insane it is.  Go on to facebook and type in the name of a city and rent.  You'll end up with options to join groups of people looking for or renting homes/rooms.  You'll see in short order how insane it is.

This is not just unsustainable; it is a death sentence.  Because the Okanagan is honestly still very much a service industry area.  Most of the jobs pay well seasonally; but after summer ends the money dries up and people start working 2-3 jobs JUSt to pay their rent.  When your work force can no longer live in the town they work in they are effectively no longer able to stay in the area at all.  Once they are pushed out; who will fill those jobs?  Where will TFWs or travelling individuals stay?

    It is a cascading effect.

Could contain: Interior Design, Building, Furniture, Living Room, Table, Refrigerator, Microwave, Bed, Chair, Sink Faucet

Could contain: Indoors, Living Room, Interior Design, Floor, Flooring, Couch, Penthouse, Chair, Sink Faucet, Monitor

Could contain: Plant, Collage, Backyard, Outdoors, Housing, Indoors, Painting, Cooktop, House, Door

I have a family member that lives in Uculet. He works during the offseason, and has summers off. I asked him why he doesn’t AirBnb his place out for the summer, and he says he can’t. The town passed regulations that only areas that are zoned for it can do short-term rentals.

Seems like a potential solution for the Okanagan. Sure, these corporations that item these properties will cry fowl… …but screw them!

Interesting to see how everyone ranks the three wingers. Just made a poll to see who everyone would keep.

I think you trade whoever you get the most back for.

As a pending UFA, Beau probably has more value at the trade deadline. But that may be a reason why a team like Chicago would be interested (trade a pick for him now, plug a hole for 2/3 of year, then trade at deadline for a potentially better pick).

The start of their window to win is about two years away, I agree.  Then it'll likely be a few years of winning a round or two before they become true contenders.  By that time, MIller will be a shell of who he is now.

The future is now, for better or worse.

Under “Bruce! There it is” we were a winning team. And when Demko came back from injury, we were a winning team. And by “winning”, I don’t mean over .500…we were one of the top teams in the league. In between those 2 streaks we were getting some of the worst goaltending in the league. Make no mistake, when our goaltending is at its average, this is a playoff team.

The other major issue was the 2nd pair. When Hughes was on the ice, the team was pretty much elite. When he wasn’t, we got caved in. Adding Hronek (and a potentially less terrible OEL) should improve that to some degree… possibly to a large degree.

This team is set to compete for the next 4 years. Whether they have the depth to actually succeed in the playoffs is another story. But the key players are locked in (or are about to be), and in 4 years they will be trending the wrong way. And nothing high-end is coming - there isn’t a single prospect in the system with legitimate top-line potential. Too many traded or failed picks along the way. Basically what we have is what we get.

The bright side is, if it’s not working over the next 2-3 years, we have high-end players that should get us nice returns to jump-start another rebuild, rather than starting from absolute scratch like we did under Benning (partially his own doing).

I like Garland but yes you are right. Let's not forget Anders "The Beast" Nilsson's performance in the World Championships.

The one I remember was Kyle Turris. Has been falling out of favour in Nashville, even getting healthy scratched. But then at the WCs, captained Team Canada to a silver medal, scoring 10 points in 10 games.

Everyone thought: “Was Nashville misusing him?” A year later many thought he’d have a resurgence in Edmonton. Turns out that no…he just wasn’t very good anymore.

So yeah - showing up for these tournaments is nice and all, but it doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, I don't get it either. He's in full control of his destiny with a NMC, the only option that doesn't involve his agreement is buying him out and that doesn't make sense sooner than later.

If people wanna play armchair GM that's chill, we all do it, but at least consider clauses.

I’m still in favour of an OEL buyout - and this is coming from someone who appreciated his game in the first year here.

But I think he’s easily replaceable with the cap savings we’d get for the first 4 years (minimum $2.83M), and the extra savings in the first 2 years give us a lot of wiggle room. As for the last 4 years (with the $2.42M penalty) the cap is going up a lot, so those will be much easier to plan for and absorb.

I think we’d be crazy to trade him.

Watching these playoffs and he’s exactly the type of player you want if that’s the goal. He may be small but he goes to the net hard and drives D men crazy.

Beauviller or Boeser are replaceable players. Garly has that extra something in his tank.

I love watching Garland when he’s on his game. But he wasn’t as engaged this past season. Maybe all the losing is getting to him.

Either way, agree that I’d rather move Beau/Boe than Garland.

Kings had a great D but ekblad, montour, gudas, staal, forsling, mahura are still one of the best dcores in hockey.

Panthers had the 12th highest goals against in the league this year - highest of any playoff team. They allowed more goals than the Senators.

Montour has been a nice find for them, but do you honestly think a bottom-4 of Gudas, Staal, Forsling, and Mahura are one of the best on the league? Boston’s bottom-4 creams those guys. IMO, Florida’s bottom-4 is actually below average. But the team is dialed in right now, and Bob is stopping nearly everything that gets through.

The Florida Panthers were the President's Trophy winners last year.  Other than one notable switch with Calgary, the core is very much intact.  So they were 100% a regular season team that underachieved this year, but are now enjoying some insane postseason success.  Hard not to make comparisons to the 2012 Kings and a red-hot Jonathan Quick.  People will forget how that Conn Smythe winner carried the team on his back.

I do agree with you on one thing.  This Bob-induced spanking of Carolina is definitely taking the sting off Bruins and Leafs fans.  And I'm sure it's caused some Leafs fans to treat the Dubas firing negatively.

The biggest difference between the current Panthers and the 2012 Kings is the defence. That Kings team had a stacked blueline behind Darryl Sutter’s stifling system. Quick was excellent, but most of the time he didn’t have to be, because the quality chances were few and far between.

The Panthers have a comparatively shallow blueline, a more loose team defence, and as such are giving up a lot of high quality scoring chances. But Bob is just in the zone, and stopping them at a ridiculous rate.

I don't follow the Panthers but weren't they like 1st overall in the league the previous season?  Was that also as a result of riding on the back of Bobo?

I don't know thus hence my question.

Last season they had a lot of career years offensively, but it didn’t translate to playoff success. Then they lost a lot of depth in the offseason (Giroux, Marchment, Chiarot, etc.), and made the big Tkachuk deal.

They seem to be built better for the playoffs, with intense, physical players that elevate their game as the stakes raise. But the main reason for their success this postseason is far-and-away Bobrovsky. His save percentage this round is unreal, if it were even average they would be down 3-0 instead.

I think we can all see now that the current Panthers squad are built to win the Cup.  They've had an unbelievable postseason.  But no team wants to qualify the way Florida did this year.  The Panthers qualified following a furious April campaign after Daddy Tkachuk ripped into them for being soft.  They still lost the last few games and only held onto the wildcard after Pittsburgh lost to... Chicago... and Columbus.  Had Pittsburgh won even one of those games, Florida doesn't make it and that front office probably goes through what Toronto is doing right now.  Relying on the league's worst team to win games is not a recipe for success but that is exactly what happened and got Florida through.

Teams want to qualify the way Florida did last year, where they nonetheless got bounced in the second round.  Teams want to qualify the way Toronto did over the Dubas years - comfortably.  For teams that have struggled to even make the playoffs (such as us), even getting the chance to compete in the postseason is still a huge plus.  More importantly, it just helps build your fanbase by winning regular season games (which was my point in the previous post).  The Canucks have probably lost a whole generation of casual fans because they've sucked every year (except the bubble year where viewership was at an all-time low).  At least Leafs fans got to be excited about their team year in, year out... even if their best chances to win the Cup were pissed away.

Maybe it's typical media spin, but Dubas is coming out of this as the victim.  This is not a good luck for Shanahan and the MLSE group at all.  More importantly, I have no doubt that a team will gladly sign Dubas based on his regular season success alone.

Ummm, no. The current Panthers have been getting outplayed on a regular basis. But they are riding an absolutely insane heater by Bobrovsky. They are like the Canucks with bubble Demko, only the team in front of the brick wall is at least decent. It’s crazy to think that they couldn’t even trust Bob as starter as recently as end of the season. He looked headed for a buyout this summer. And then suddenly…magic.

We can all question the ability of the Leafs to succeed in the playoffs. But super-Bob and his band of merry men are doing the same thing they did to the Leafs to the Hurricanes, a proven playoff winner.

usually easier to acquire. we've been looking for a partner for hughes ever since tanev. our defence is small, our forward ain't exactly big either. we dont need a team defence full of redundant skill set players. Hughes Hronek and OEL are all puck moving offence first player with the former 2 being small and tiny and we have OEL converted into a role he's not comfortable in.. a defensive defenceman paired with Myers. OEL have looked the best in a vancouver uniform when Hughes was injured playing in hughes role.. he have looked god awful paired with myers being the more defensive player of the 2.

our priority was to find a defensively sound defenceman that can play in the top 4 not another offensive defenceman that requires a defensive d partner. i personally dont think OEL will work as his partner because he'll be in the same role as he was playing with myers.. and we are probably going to end up looking for a partner that you claim are usually easier to acquire for hughes and hronek

I thought OEL played the defensive role quite well in his first season in Vancouver. I mean…he made Myers look decent - that’s quite an accomplishment!

Of course, he was hot garbage in his 2nd year, but the team seems to think that is related to the foot injury he suffered at the Worlds last year. The coach seems confident that he’ll return much stronger next season. If he plays anything like he did last year, I think he’ll be a good partner for Hronek.

As for Hughes, I don’t think it matters that much who they pair him with - he’s that good. Schenn was good in that role, but Hughes didn’t miss a beat when he left either. I think the team should treat him like Tampa treats Hedman - he’s been playing with undervalued young guys for years (Ruuta, and now Perbix). Maybe they can leverage the opportunity to play with Hughes into getting a favourable contract from a guy like Mayfield or Gudas (or even Schenn again). But if not, maybe Johansson, Juulsen, or even Woo can fill that role on the cheap?

    My thought however is...

Why didnt we claim a guy like Vrana?

Kravy has never produced at an NHL level while Vrana has.

i feel like we need to take a shot at guys like that and then dump/ waive them if it doesnt work out.

$5.25M cap hit, for a guy who hasn’t played hockey in ages. That’s a helluva risk.

St. Louis took a shot on him, but only after Detroit retained 50%.

i don't get that. if we pay myer's bonus, that 5 mil is counted against our cap, isn't it. we save 1m.

No, the full cap hit counts against whatever team he’s playing on, regardless of who paid the actual cash and when.

there's also a lot of data out there that suggest hronek isn't matched up against other teams top players and he was only good when paired with matta.. he's a very good offensive defenceman.. him and QH on the defence will give the canucks a lot of firepower.. but again offence is not the problem.. limiting other teams offence is.. and how often do you see teams make a big trade for an injured player?? especially one that was likely to be injured till almost the end of the season? if not the rest of the season? he doesn't have the track record or pedigree of a jack eichel it's a massive risk he might not even come back the same with his shoulder injury.. and you think he's going to sign for 6mil? 40 points in 60 games RD and he's very good defensively as you guys claim. hughes is not really a comparable because he signed his so early into his career and by the time his contract is over he's not even going to bein his peak prime years yet.. so the well hughes is signed for 7.85mil so therefore hronek will only get 6. Hughes is a bargain if he signed a bridge instead he'd be in the 9.5mil range easily. for hronek's production he'd be easily looking at 7+ that is if he's willing to sign here and will all depends on how he looks production wise without the pp1 mins and who knows what chaos we have as his partner. OEL looks like the default partner for him assuming he's back next season.. and again both players are similar role.. puck moving offensive defenseman.. probably wont end up well. literally OEL Hughes and Hronek all are better served with a more defensive minded partner.. we dont exactly have any of that as a LD or RD.. OEL struggled playing the defensive defenceman role partnered with myers.. he's probably going to struggle playing that role with hronek coz simply that's not his style.

Defensemen that produce offence like Hronek and are also effective shut-down guys are not available for trade. Those are franchise defensemen.

I believe effective team defence includes the ability for your D to be able to quickly and efficiently move the puck out of your zone. Hughes is a great example of this. He doesn’t hit, block, box-out, or do almost anything typical of a “defensive defenseman” all that well, and yet his defensive impact is fantastic.

IMO, not being able to move the puck well was the main failing of our 2nd and 3rd pairs. Hronek potentially fixes that on the 2nd pair. We still need more positional/defensive guys to pair him and Hughes with, but those players are usually easier to acquire.

Wonder which direction they'll go in now, they can't quite rebuild, I bet they'll come out and say they want to retool just like half of the league. Obviously they won't be able to move Huby or Kadri so you start looking at other guys to move out. Backlund, Mang, Coleman, Dube etc., none of these guys are particularly bad but they need a big change. Their defence is pretty solid on the whole.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just name a coaching change and leave the lineup pretty similar just to see what happens to start the season.

It’s tough to say, because so many of their better players are one year from UFA status: Lindholm, Toffoli, Hanifin, Backlund, Tanev, and Zadorov. But they probably want to see how they’ll respond to a coaching change.

I suspect they’ll move a defenseman (Kylington is supposed to be back) - it might be Hanifin if he indicates that he doesn’t want to extend in Calgary. And I suspect they’ll move Vladar, and bring up Wolf, who has completely dominated the AHL.  Other than that, I don’t suspect there will be many moves.

It is actually. He decided it was ok to be a top heavy team. And it's cost them.

COVID derailed the cap right after the Mathews and Marner mega-deals. If it weren’t for that, they would have had a lot more flexibility.

That said, Mathews and Marner have proven to be flakes, that wilt when things ramp up in the playoffs. Can have one of them, but a team built around both won’t win. They’ll need to make their decision and trade the other.
