  1. Hey curt are waivers still active or can we move players up and down freely?

Think I posted about that a few pages back, but no waivers aren't active right now until the buyout window in September.

  2. I think everyone agrees we sold Cory extremely cheap, but you have to admit it was a fire sale because frankly, MG had a massive forest fire to put out in the crease and it was intensifying with the heat. Not the best solution imaginable, not by a long shot, but a solution none the less, imo.

But the reason it was a fire sale and we sold him so cheap was because Gillis didn't address the situation over a year ago when it first arose. Management has nobody to blame but themselves for the mess they were in and they handled it terribly.

  3. To clarify, for those that may have seen the Twitter tirade or talked on Trillian yesterday after the Draft.

For me, the problem with the trade is the value we got back. 9th overall is great, but doesn't seem like nearly enough for a goaltender like Cory Schneider. Just entering his prime with fantastic numbers over the last few years, signed for just $4 million a year for 2 more seasons. And all they got was one pick. 9th overall, mind you, and I have no problem with them selecting Bo Horvat. I might have gone Nichushkin to get the hulking winger with elite level potential, but you can't argue with Horvat as he will be a great pick as well, but I digress. My issue is, could they not have added more than one pick? A depth pick? A half decent prospect? If you're going to move Schneider, who IS an NHL quality starting goalie and has the ability to be the guy in goal for a team for the next 10-12 years, do you not need to get more than one draft pick?

Further to that, if they knew a day previous to the draft that they were making this deal as they claim they did, why did they not inform Cory Schneider of it? Why did he have to hear it from James Duthie as the deal was breaking? Why did they not talk to Luongo beforehand and get a feel for his thoughts on the matter? All indications are he was not as happy as you'd like your starting goalie for the next 9 years to be. Shocked, refused any interviews and will have to speak with his agent. Doesn't sound like a guy that's happy to be the guy once again in Vancouver. Cory meanwhile, in his interview, said he hoped he would play his whole career in Vancouver. The Canucks better hope they can win over Luongo to the point where he's happy to be here again, because if your starter doesn't want to be there, it doesn't bode well for the team. I have faith that Luongo will be the goaltender he has been in the past for us and that with him in goal the Canucks can make deep playoff runs and compete for a championship, but I don't like how the Canucks handled this situation.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the Canucks prospect depth got much deeper yesterday and we still have an elite goaltender in Luongo. I've always been a Luongo fan since his Florida days and I hope that the Canucks can mend this fence and everything goes well. But I don't like how the entire thing was handled by Gillis and the Canucks organization. If the Canucks were moving Schneider instead, they could have made that decision last summer and make a move that probably would have brought in more assets and make our team better, and perhaps last season wouldn't have been a complete waste of time. To me it boils down to the return they got for a top young goaltender like Schneider, the fact that they didn't talk to either guy before the deal was announced and how management mishandled the entire situation from start to finish and hurt the team in the process.

As for the draft itself, I love who the Canucks took. I love getting Horvat, he will be an excellent player for us. Can't believe that Shinkaruk fell to the Canucks at 24, so loving that pick as well. Don't know much about Cole Cassells in the 3rd round, but how we managed to land Jordan Subban at 115th is baffling. I'll take it. The Canucks did great on the draft floor yesterday and the future is definitely much brighter today than it was 48 hours ago. No arguing that point at all.

  4. well this sucks for corey..and you too

finally the next season will give cory and you an answer..brodeur could get injured again...brodeur could play mediocre..we´ll see ;)

Yeah, today went all the way bad for me... Nino traded to a team that snuffs out offensive potential and Schneider relegated to one more year of backup duty.

  5. do you think schneids will backup marty next season? may they will share the starter job

    Maybe, but...

Devils Say Brodeur Is Still Their Number 1 Goalie

The New Jersey Devils bit on one of the more interesting trader rumors to float around on a draft day full of movement between rosters. The Vancouver Canucks were shopping backup netminder Cory Schneider and despite having a legend in net, the Devils agreed to acquire Schneider in exchange for the ninth overall pick in the draft.

But while they gave up a high draft pick to get Schneider, the Devils say that adding another goalie doesn’t at all mean Martin Brodeur is going to be pushed out of the No. 1 role with the team.

basically what the trade means is that the Devils now have a viable backup to come in if Brodeur goes down with an injury again or to simply come in and give the future Hall of Famer a night off. Schneider backed up Roberto Luongo in Vancouver and saw some time but wasn’t named the starter like many thought he might be before last season started.

So while he’s not going to be improving his depth chart position he has improved his living condition as the Devils will give Schneider much more room to show his skills and will prime him to take over for Brodeur when he eventually steps away.

Kind of annoying how they constantly refer to him as a backup. Clearly he's not a backup anymore. So... guess I'm looking for a starting goalie.

  6. I think once the draft starts, there will be plenty of wheeling and dealing.

And I love Luongo's cap hit at 5.33, most teams would. It's just the term (9 years remaining) and the possibility he retires b4 the contract is up and the penalty you'd pay as a result.

The stupid thing is, it would likely be a non issue in 7-8 years because the cap is projected to go up by a lot, or its possible the NHLPA opts out of this CBA and we lockout again :P

The bulk of the Cap Recapture Penalty goes against the Canucks even if he's traded, so to me that's really a non-issue. The back diving portion you would think would be attractive to teams that need to reach the cap floor while paying less in actual dollars.

  7. What about the whole league... where`s the deals? I got up early for this, damnit.

I expected a Trade Center alert to be my wake-up call :(

Same here.. so far after all the buildup, we're supposed to be satisfied with Justin Falk for Benn Ferriero?? Blah...

  8. and now CBJ needs a goalie all of a sudden, hrm

I wonder if Cory or Lu might be in play to Columbus?

Columbus wanted Lu last summer... might be a potential deal there, I don't know though.

I'm hoping for big things from the Canucks today. But knowing Gillis, I'm expecting a whole lot of nothing. <_<

  9. I am so glad my front office team prioritized Mike Smith as our number one contract issue way back in January. We worked first and foremost to secure Mike long term and with the news coming in from a large number of sources now on a 6 year 5.7million dollar NHL deal to stay in Phoenix, or where ever Phoenix ends up, we are glad we took the slight gamble and had it pay off.

Congrats to Mike Smith and to all of New York Rangers franchise stakeholders and fans. A great partnership will continue for at least the next five seasons.

Mike Smith for 6 years @ $5.7 million?

Or Roberto Luongo for 9 years @ $5.333 million?

Roberto's contract is not as bad as the media wants you to believe.

  10. So anyone on the UFA/RFA lists as of say tomorrow morning, is a bonafide UFA or RFA open to receiving offers in the new month, right?

I don't want to lose a draft pick for tampering if i fire in an offer, and followup question, the offers may come in at 2 minutes after midnight in the first, but if say they come in at noon on the 3rd, they would get just as much weight as if they came in at the top of the new month?

Anyone still listed on those charts as of right now will either be a Restricted Free Agent if they are in italics, or an Unrestricted Free Agent and teams can send their offers in beginning at midnight on July 1st. All offers carry the same weight, so if one team sends it in at 12:01am and another team sends theirs in at 3:30pm, it's not going to give anyone an advantage.

Do NOT expect any responses. Those will start coming on the 5th.

  11. Just wondering Curt, can i make up my picks after the draft, or does it have to be before?

Reminder to EDM to make up the picks you missed, because once the NHL draft goes down, you can't.

  12. Avs win that one big time. Tanguay will be motivated to end his career on a high note where he scored a Stanley Cup GWG and Sarich is a steady dman. Jones is overpaid and SOB is SOB :P

    I dunno...

Jones overpaid, especially for last year, but the 2 previous years he was a 20 goal+, 35-40 point guy. If he gets to that level, still overpaid, but not by much. For all the flak Shane O'Brien gets, there were some stretches where he was the best defenceman on the Canucks, on a winning team. He's a decent defenceman and for $2 million a year, a solid addition, especially to Calgary where they could really use a guy like him.

  13. RUMOR: Sources continue to suggest that for the right offer, Shea Weber could be in play in Winnipeg. The stalwart defender has always been on the untouchable list, so it's unclear if these reports are accurate.
