  1. Bring Adam Oates in as Torts assistant and if Torts falters by Christmas time make Oates the head coach? Might be a win win scenario? Benning as GM of course.
  2. Maybe hire Trotz as an assistant? Give Torts until Christmas. If Torts bombs. Trotz is our guy?
  3. Only Canucks games I ever fell asleep watching was Canucks vs Predators.
  4. That would certainly be the so called "$64.00 question." Other than Barry Trotz (which I would give a resounding NO to) there aren't that many qualified candidates available right now. Gillis certainly had a lot more to choose from when he hired Torts than Linden and or Benning (if that's who ends up as GM) have right now or in the foreseeable future. That fact alone may force Linden/Benning to keep Torts for another year or at least until a more suitable candidate becomes available. Say what you want about Torts, but he is a Stanley Cup winning coach, and coaches with that pedigree don't grow on trees. Simply replacing him for the sake of replacing him doesn't make a lot of sense, especially when the core players have stated that they are OK with another year (or more) with Torts as head coach. Linden/Benning may want to tinker with the support coaching staff a bit, but that might be all you see this year.
  5. Ian MacIntyre (Vancouver Sun) was on Team 1040 yesterday afternoon. Stated that news from Rogers Arena has been "eerily quiet". Also stated that Team President Trevor Linden has been away this week, (Detroit yesterday I believe he said) talking to other teams, GM's, Assistant GM's, owners, etc., seeking advice on how to proceed and how other teams run their affairs. Basically saying "Hello" to everybody and getting his feet wet so to speak. Assuming he would also be exploring the trade market a bit as well. Ian MacIntyre reiterated what everybody else had heard that the decision on Torts would come sooner than later. He also felt that the decision to fire or retain Torts may very well come from Trevor Linden himself rather than the new GM, given the fact that the new GM may not be hired or even interviewed (officially) until late May - earlier June. (right before the draft) Assuming that Assistant GM Jim Benning from Boston is still the front runner for the Canucks GM position that is.
  6. Seemed to work for Gillis when he retained AV. Just saying it's not an impossible scenario.
  7. If it is Benning (and I hope it is) then that process - decision may not even happen until late May - early June. I really don't think Linden will make Torts and the rest of the coaching staff wait that long, considering he has already gone on public record by stating that he wants the "Torts" decision sooner than later.
  8. I guess Kesler must ne an idiot as well as he had publicly stated that Torts is the best coach he has ever played for. Just saying.....
  9. I beg to differ. Linden has already publicly stated that he wants to make a decision SOONER than later. Most are surprised it has taken this long. If the rumors are true and Benning is the GM Linden wants, then that process may not even begin until late may - early June (just before the draft) depending on how the Bruins fare in the playoffs. Again, Linden has already PUBLICLY stated that he won't make Torts wait that long for a decision. Not fair to him or the rest of the coaching staff for that matter as one has to assume the assistants, etc., will be gone if Torts is in fact fired. Besides. Adding - hiring a new GM just before the draft, especially in a year that we draft a VERY important 6th, (let alone all the player moves we are expecting) makes for a VERY hectic time. Don't think the Canucks organization wants to add a new coach into that mix as well. Torts will either be long gone by that time with the new GM and coach being hired pretty much simultaneously, or Torts will still be the coach when the new GM is hired with the knowledge that Torts will be the starting coach (at least in the interim) for the 2014-2015 season.
  10. I beg to differ. From what was reported today (Farhan Lalji) the core players he spoke to after their interviews with Linden stated they were very matter a fact about the whole thing. No knives and or high 5's. Just the facts so to speak. MOST of the players liked what he brought as far as knowledge, stategy, and hockey sense, but didn't like the drama that went with it. NONE demanded a trade if Torts was brought back, and ALL stated they would be OK playing another year with Torts as coach. Personally, I think the reason that it's taking so long is that it isn't as cut and dried as many thought it was, as there seems to be a genuine process going on here.
  11. Don't think AV had the injuries to deal with that Torts did. Santorelli was a HUGE loss and has been done since the Phoenix game. Richardson and Stanton were also hurt this year and missed considerable time. Better players aren't any help if they're hurt for a significant part of the year, coupled with the fact that the Canucks had ZERO depth at key positions.
  12. Have you given any thought to the fact that this team was in the process of tanking 2 years before Torts was even a thought for this club? This team has not played well since game 2 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, and has been on life support for the 2 seasons since then. Torts at least made this same rag tag group interesting before the injuries hit, and to his credit, adjusted his style quite a few times in hopes of salvaging the season with players that were clearly out of their comfort zone, and in positions they were unfamiliar with. (i.e. we had/have ZERO depth on this team) Fire Torts? Bring in another coach, and a new GM, as well as a new President (Linden) AND player changes for next year? Just asking for another disastrous year ripe with excuses that there were too many changes in one year for our players to absorb, BUT WE'LL CERTAINLY BE BETTER NEXT YEAR IN 2015-2016? I think not. New GM and President are enough changes for one offseason. Torts has had this team for a year, needs to be the one stable in the equation to start next season, especially when you factor in that the player changes will most likely be a result of his recommendations. Give him until Christmas this year if one year makes too many uncomfortable, but firing Torts and starting all over again with everybody new means another no playoff season for the Canucks. ”
  13. You know for a fact he lost the locker room? Most of the players interviewed (Bieksa comes to mind) said they liked the fact that Torts was mad and stood up for them. "Had their back" I believe the phrase was. Lost respect for Torts? Again. Any proof of that? Kesler has stated that Torts is the best coach he has ever played for. The Sedins backed him and "had his back" right to the end of the season. The fact that he is still here almost a week and a half after the season is over is most likely due to the fact that the majority of the players actually spoke in a positive way about him, and didn't carve him to pieces behind closed doors in their one on one with Linden. YES! You can blame the injuries, and there isn't a team in the league that could have sustained the key injuries we had, coupled with the obvious lack of depth we had at those positions, and maintained a winning record. Possible about the team being wrong for his style, but who knows what changes he was promised by Mike Gillis when he came here, and what changes Trevor Linden may give him if they decide to keep him?
  14. It also may mean that we need some better players, which again, is the GM's responsibility, not the coaches responsibility. I seem to remember AV trying to "shoot from everywhere" when we were desperate to win against Boston in 2011 finals. Same tactics, same players, same results. Time to shake up a few players I think.
  15. Have you been watching the playoffs so far? Lot's of that going on. Just saying...as the second season is upon us and as we all know, it's the only season that really matters. No time in the playoffs for "advanced stats and modern tactics". Just hard nosed, old fashioned hockey.
  16. That's not the coaches fault as he uses what he's supplied with. The supplier (Mike Gillis) has already paid the price for his inadequacies.
  17. We also need point men that can hit the net UNLIKE Garrison. I sure miss Salo sometimes.
  18. Sooooooo that's why the Caucks outshot every opponent by quite a margin when they were playing well under Torts system? (??)
  19. Torts had the Canucks going gangbusters before the injuries hit and he had to change his style and approach to what was left of the Canucks due to those injuries and the fact the we had NO DEPTH on this team whatsoever this past season. I personally thought he did pretty well with what he had to work with, which again, AFTER the injuries, (and they were significant) was ZILCH. In hindsight though, he has already admitted his fault this season in not returning to the formula/style that had the Canucks winning just about every game in Dec-Jan after the team became healthy again. Strikes me as more than a one trick pony. As far as the comparison to the Rangers and AV. Pretty obvious AV took over a better team in the Ranges than Torts did in the Canucks. AV took over a team Torts had worked with for the past 4 years that went from not making the playoffs to conference finals, while Torts took over a team that has been in a steady decline (under AV NOT Torts) since loosing to the Bruins in game 7. Pretty significant difference in my books. Still, Torts did a GREAT job motivating and installing his system at the beginning of the season, and if memory serves me right, I believe we had a better record than AV and the Rangers up to when the injuries hit the Canucks. NOT blaming everything entirely on the injuries as there appears to be other mitigating factors with MG, etc., but I dare say there isn't another team in the league that could have posted a winning record this past season with the key injuries the Canucks faced, especially when you factor in the LACK of depth the Canucks have at those key positions. Torts is a great coach and is the right coach for the Canucks given a few roster changes and an influx of skilled, energetic, youth to augment the (obviously) aging core of players currently on the roster.
  20. Taking a puck in the face (while blocking a shot) was an example used by Bruce Boudreau as a player "stepping up" and doing what was needed. He encouraged other players to step up and do what was needed as well. I'm sure he doesn't want every player to take a puck in the face, just what happened at that particular time to Getzlaf that's all.
  21. Seems weird to me as well, because our goalies (more so Luongo and Schneider than Lack as Lack hasn't played that much with the team) have stated MANY times that if a player is going to be in the shooting lanes then he better block the shot, because if it gets by him or HE JUMPS OUT OF THE WAY AT THE LAST MOMENT, then it's most likely going to be a goal because there's not going to be enough time for the goalie to react.
  22. Mmmmm. Think our new President (Trevor Linden) would disagree with you on this one. When asked point blank by Ron McLean about Torts shot blocking, Linden replied by saying that every coach he has ever played for has asked him and all the other players to "get into the shooting lanes" and block shots. Linden went on the state that he was more concerned that the Canucks medical staff were "up on" the latest and greatest ways to treat such injuries correctly (i.e Schroeder coming back too early and reinjuring himself) rather than the injuries occurring in the first place.
  23. Bruce Boudreau said the exact opposite the other night after the Ducks opening victory. He stated the Ryan Getzlaf's blocking of a shot led DIRECTLY to their second goal. He further praised Ryan Getzlaf for taking a puck in the face late in the game for the team, and that his players should take note and play the same way (i.e. step up) or they would not only hear it from him but from the other players as well.
