  1. While it is not expected that Nylander and omg re-draft talk would cease in this thread, I think Nylander's skill has been overhyped for awhile and Virtanen's skill has been underrated due to him bringing more than just offense to the table. I think he'll bring more than Dustin Brown, skill and speed-wise, but imho this is comparable to Dustin Brown vs. Thomas Vanek of the 2003 draft. I'm taking Brown hands-down because he is one of those guys you absolutely hate to face while Vanek is... Vanek...

Agreed that Baertschi is pretty much the guy regardless. Pretty sure I would not have traded a 2015 2nd for him, but I can understand why we did it. Baertschi was a skilled player being wasted in Calgary and there is potential for him to be top-6 in Vancouver right away. This helps Baertschi, and therefore the league as a whole, quite a bit.

Nylander is a perfect fit in TO anyway. You can even hold an 'advanced stat' on hair-tosses per interview.

Meanwhile, speaking of the 2003 draft, Canucks re-draft: Kesler? or Perry?

Hopefully he makes the Leafs next year and just gets crushed. :)

  2. That's great.

Yeah but it was probably one of the first (if not the first) that he saw of a Canuck fan putting his name on a jersey so he was probably happy to see that more than anything.

They're not allowed to choose in training camp - Vey wore #44 until he made the team then changed to #7.

Yeah but then he doesn't call for the puck when he's open for a shot either. I thought last game was a bit weird for Jake even though he was moved up to the 2nd line - he didn't really play that well aside from sticking up for Lazar. I think that move had more to do with Ritchie really blowing than Jake really impressing and earning that shot on McDavid's wing.

Hopefully they get a practice in together and start playing with some chemistry. That line looked a lot better against Germany when they were put together initially than yesterday.

That line really seemed to get us going. I thought they played real well and created 5v5 chances, something the other second line did very little of in the first 3 games.

  3. I see some things with Virtanen that Kassian still struggles with. Hopefully Virtanen figures them out faster. One is leaving his position in the defensive zone. Maybe its the style of play the coach wants, but Virtanen seems to drift from RW to LW. He has a tendency to stay high and move across the blueline to the LW side instead of moving down low on the RW to support his dman.

The other struggle is him figuring out where to be in the offensive zone when he doesn't have the puck. He sometimes seems to get himself lost in the high slot (almost at the point) or in no man's land between the front of the net and the half-wall. He just needs a systems coach to tell him where to be.

I noticed the exact same thing but I don't think it's that big of a concern as it should be addressed as he moves along. He's simply trolling the top of the blueline hoping for a good bounce or a puck to break free for a rush the other way. You can get away with this over and over again in junior with great results. Pretty common mistake for offensive youngsters. Unfortunately in the NHL that will often end up in the back of your net.

His positioning is a bit weird as he almost drifts to the center position. Again, looking for that puck in an opportune spot. From what I've seen if he does get it there he is still a good threat because of his shot.

  4. So all of the sudden everyone is able to predict what Virtanen will be like next year at training camp, and what WD, and Benning are thinking. Okay then pretty funny stuff.

  5. Horvat will only miss a total of 7 games if he sent to the world Juniors.

Personally, this is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity for Bo Horvat. I'm sure the team is good enough to let Horvat go away for couple of weeks. give him a chance to represent Canada, if he was gonna make it, there is believe he would have either a C or an A. I really doubt those 7 games he will miss will be a season changer, if we are that weak to rely on a 19 year old for 7 games who only plays 9 minutes of ice time per game then we surely do not belong in the playoffs.

Terrible move JB and Linden... terrible move..... 7 games... after that Horvat is ours forever....

Shades of Mike Gillis era is beginning to happen.

Horvat is sent to Ontario to fight for his country in front of home crowd whois going to fill in for Horvat?

    the forgotten one

    Brendan Gaunce.

give him a 4th line role on the Canucks show us what he can do too. Plays a similar 2 way game, a physical canadian kid, nothing to lose.

This post is out to lunch.

  6. I agree with this..for a kid not hardly seeing the ice this period doesnt bode well when there are 2 cuts to be made..could be taking the Horvat snub out on him as well.

Wouldn't they actually be giving him a chance to prove himself if others were ahead of him at this point?

They don't give a spit about winning. On second thought maybe that subway series got to them. It shouldn't though.

  7. I don't know how this became a Wellwood talk but on that subject...

I 100% agree with this comment! Wellwood may not have been the hardest working player, the fastest player, in shape (he was rounder than most), but he did have tremendous talent. The guy was a smooth skater, with some decent vision, a nice release and above average puck handling skills.

Yeah, he had great skill. Shows how daft some people are on this board sometimes.

  8. they're probably just hoping vancouver signs him so he's ineligible for NCAA, but isnt good enough to be a 1 in the AHL, so he's sent to juniors for a year.

Or the gm just wants a cool name on his reserve list

Or Benning is behind it all and is trying to speed up his development.

  9. This is why I have a hideous feeling we'll never see Tryamkin in a Canucks jersey. Why come all the way over here. Try out in training camp. Then fly back to Russia if he can't crack the roster. I hope I'm wrong but he will make way more in the KHL than the AHL, or an entry level deal here. It's Koltsov all over again.

He's actually said that his desire is to come over after his contract expires. 2 years.

  10. bump

*the Maine vs Lowell game is now listed on TSN2, not the main network as I believe it was when I first posted this.

    5pm Shaw 182 and 237.

I just tuned in what number does he wear?
    10 it is.
  11. And like I said, if he keeps playing the way he has and/or improving, the offense will come. He's making too many smart defensive plays to transition in the the offensive zone, good passes and going to the net to not contribute offensively.

What luxury of time? He's our best option at 4C. I don't see anything that changes that short of a trade. And frankly all this offense everyone's clamoring for is silly. A 4th line is expected to play well defensively, bring some energy and and be an even (or + if you're lucky) most nights chipping in offense occasionally. Like every~5 games or so. And that may not even lead to points directly to him like the goal he was in front of the net for the other night. He's doing just fine.

I agree. He looks great out there for a 19 year old and he's only going to get better. He might enjoy going back to junior though, he hasn't scored a goal in over 5 months.

If I'm Benning I don't burn a year off of his ELC this year. That's the only reason I send him down. His play is not the issue, but with so many young players coming up now, we are going to need those deals in the next few years to be cap compliant.

As for Bo's replacement with the Canucks, the obvious choice is Gaunce. His game is virtually the same as Bo's and I don't see any drop-off from what he brings to the table.

It's quite possible burning a year off the ELC will benefit us anyway. In 2 years he may be one year away from breaking out offensively and getting a big pay day. Having to renegotiate one year earlier may mean we get a 2 year bridge contract worth far less then if he breaks out in year 3.

  12. they released their CHL TV schedule 1/4 of the way through the season

those highlights were terrible. This is a national event. Are you telling me in a 60 minute game, with 11 shootout rounds there was only 5 plays worthy of highlights?

SMH ROGERS. Very disappointed so far in this half assed coverage.

I too am very unimpressed by this "new" great coverage we're supposed to be seeing. Seems like the old bamboozle to me. They say it's better, it just isn't. It's been mediocre at best compared to years past.

  13. Points matter though. Like, a lot.

Coming out of that Utica stretch with exactly ZERO points didn't just prove that he's not ready for the NHL, it proved that he's probably below other guys in the pecking order.

Let's say he proves to be defensively sound and puts up zero points in the NHL too. Would you consider him a liability? I certainly would. He'd be an offensive liability in a team that is currently getting production from all 4 lines and needs all the scoring it can get.

I agree that it's exciting to see prospects debut in the NHL but Horvat needs to go through the motions too. He hasn't shown anything to prove he's even remotely ready to regularly feature in the NHL. And all this is said without mentioning the fact that his biggest asset, face-offs, will undoubtedly decrease due to facing much higher competition in the NHL.

I would say that saying no points in your first 5 pro games is proof you're not ready is proof that you really have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. For the record only 4 forwards had more than 2 points over that timespan and 3 of them had only 1. I guess we got 8 guys that are pretty much useless at the NHL level in our line-up already.
