Laffers vs the Bruins? Doesn't that present a moral dilemma? 2011 aside I would have to root for the Bruins. I know Bucyk. That said I cheered for the Habs when Bucyk was still playing. That is how much I detest the Laffers.

That would be a dilemma alright.

Personally, I wouldn't have a choice. I don't care who it is playing against them, I want the Bruins to never win again.

Whether its left over bitterness about 2011 or just sheer envy at how perpetually successful their organization has been over the same period as our lost decade.  I don't care. I hate them forever.

Leafs will always be the Laffs. I hate them for other reasons. Mostly about being the darlings of the national sports media. I don't want them to win the Cup this year, but then again, I don't want any team to win it, before the Canucks do. The only palatable choice would be Winnipeg, but that looks like its not happening. Every other team has reasons to not deserve it (before us).  Whether its because they live in an ungrateful hockey-illiterate market, or have won it too many times already, I hate having to watch the playoffs without my team in the mix.

But if I think about which team I'd hate most having to watch skate around the ice holding up the Cup?  No contest....Marchand holding the Cup up again would make me puke way more than watching Mathews do it.

    Edited to add,

The sizes of the puke buckets I'd need for other teams winning now (and not us).

The reality is actually very simple

A #7D doesnt win you games, by definition they're replaceable players. They can be heart & soul, grit, culture, etc etc. but your team's success doesn't depend on them.

    A very simple test -

Try 10 games with an identical lineup with Hughes in, but no Burroughs, then reverse it, and see how we do.

    You are correct.

Still even though Hughes has a skill set in multiple aspects of the game that exceeds anything any other defenseman has on the team now, there are still things a player like Kyle does better than Quinn. Every player helps to win games.

I used to think Burroughs was decent mobility wise but I've seen some glaring mistakes on transition defence where he cant skate back fast enough while processing the play at the same time.

He seems better in set D situations where hes defending the cycle and then getting in the lane to block a shot etc.

    I am strictly speaking defensively.

Guys like Hughes, Myers have mobility (although Myers lacks in other areas)

I used to think OEL did too but it looks like either he lost a step or injuries slowed him own this year

    Juulsen lacks mobility

    then Schenn

    then Burroughs

I'm talking just straight footspeed.  When a defender takes Burroughs hard outside, Burroughs does all he can to skate back as fast as he could but once the forward cuts or makes a move, I feel like Burroughs is swimming in the deep end and cant recover to take away the passing lane or close the gap etc.

I may be overlooking some things.  Because I'm rooting for him. I'll admit that.

But we will agree to disagree. You could be right about a situation where Burroughs is playing up too high and gets caught.  I would counter with the fact that that can happen to any D, and what Burroughs does is simply not be in the position for that to happen much. (playing too high, or choosing the wrong time to jump in) He is very conservative with his positioning. He may get in that kind of trouble when he doesn't read the play and gets caught. But that happens rarely, by my eyes, he just doesn't make those kinds of mistakes for that to be any kind of real problem for him. He is usually the first of the pairing to be back in his zone just because he reads the ice very well. Can you honestly say you've seen him burned like that much?

Im a big Burroughs fan. Love guys like him and schenn that gives some respect and credibility to the team.

That being said said, the Dawg rating doesn't capture the importance of him to say Hughes for example.

A really simple way to consider this would be to say look at the hits stat.

Schenn out hits Hughes by a wide margin.

But if my custom stat gave hits a 90 percent weight vs controlled zone exits at Like 10 percent, you would think Schenn is more valuable than Hughes.

The problem in all of this is that we don't even know what variables and weight Faber is giving to any of these stats.

A team definitely needs tough guys that can hit and block shots. But they also need elite skilled players.

I would wager that an elite skilled player is a rarer commodity than a physical player.

That's why I think the Dawg rating is stupid. Every team needs a dawg or 2. Maybe even 3.

So maybe this stat is only pertinent when looking at filling the role of a dawg and evaluating 2 dawgs when looking at free agency.

However Faber compares all players on the same Dawg scale and that is why this whole thing is stupid.

I agree that this Dawg rating system is flawed.  It puts a lot of weight on physicality obviously.  I'm more interested how this rating coincides with my own eye test looking at all aspects of what a good d is.  In a lower post you said "He needs to work on his mobility" which I find odd. What kind of mobility are you talking about?  He's not nearly as mobile as Hughes in deking out players etc. (which actually can get Quinn in trouble when he tries to get too cute) But its not his job to make offensive rushes up the ice.

I'd argue Burroughs is exceptionally mobile compared to other defensemen on the team besides Quinn, within his own d zone. While other D hang onto the puck, panic and give it away, he is mobile in the sense he sees the ice well, and thinks the game very fast, and makes good quick decisions shielding the puck and getting it to a forward near the blue line better than the others. Many times that forward will then lose the puck, but thats not on Burroughs.  He also, from my eye test, is not out of position much. Very disciplined in that area too.  I just can't see any flaws with his game other than he can't seem to put up points.

  5. I'm hoping for the best for Brock.  But sadly, at his still young age, he may have seen his best playing days.  Good intentions are just that.  Season after season we are told that this is his year. Then the excuses follow.  Sorry if this sounds heartless but we all lose our loved ones along the way.  If emotional events affect Boeser to the point of paralysis on the ice, then what happens if another unpleasant event happens in his personal life?

Don't mean to sound cold, but it took a long time for him to finally come to the conclusion, from what I've read, that he shouldn't be so resentful of the game for keeping him from laying on the couch in Minnesota feeling sad for himself. To the point that his game suffered. He has improved  since Tocchet, but its not just his emotional baggage, he just is not very hard on the puck. If I see its Brock going to the boards with the puck, I can pretty much garantee it won't be him coming out with the puck. He's also slow to move it, gets the puck stolen way too often. He just doesn't have that DAWG in him.

I think despite his assurances, he really could use a change in scenery. He may even bounce back on a new team and some would be blasting JR/PA in retrospect after he's gone. I'm still willing to give him another shot here next season, prove me wrong Brock, but I also would understand why he was traded...and not just for cap recovery.

Yes it is. Tbh any player rating system that evaluates Burroughs' level of "contributions" as greater than Hughes is a stupid system.

I love Burroughs but he wont win us games. Hughes wins us games.

You've already had replies similar but I just can't let this go.   Of course Burroughs helps win us games.  It's one dimensional thinking to think otherwise.  Sticking up for teammates can change momemtum. So can a big hit. So can efficiently getting the puck out of danger in his zone and smartly moving the puck up the ice, on a consistent basis, which Burroughs does exceptionally well.  You do not see Kyle make many mistakes.

Tanev had the same problem earlier at least, with some fans seeing any value in a defenceman that didn't put up numbers and could 'only'....you know....actually play defence. No matter how well.

I swear it must be a kind of reverse bias with some fans. If a player is paid too much for what they bring they are rightly criticized.  But some players are also overlooked if they are paid too little.  (there must be a good reason!) Add onto that the "local boy" angle where its also assumed a player from here, like a Virtanten, always has an unfair advantage with multiple shots.

But no, IMO at least, Burroughs is one of our best D.  And his particular type of contributions ARE greater than Hughes in some areas.  Toughness, and even puck recovery using his size and angles.  Hughes is great when he actually has the puck. Which is why they make such great partners.

My opinion of this management would drop greatly if they were stupid enough not to re-sign Kyle. Even with a pay raise to a mill. or mill and a half, he is a bargain for what he  brings to help us WIN GAMES.

If Lamoriello waits until the summer, he doesn't have this problem.  Not sure why he was so in a rush to sign BO.  He had the leverage of giving him that extra year.  8.5x8 is the equivalent of 9.75x7.  Even if BO had continued his pace from leaving Vancouver he still wouldn't have gotten 9.75 in the summer.

If BO isn't signed right now and becomes a UFA he is probably getting what JR offered him on his last offer, 7x7.  That's probably his ceiling in UFA.  Which is the same as 6.1x8.  Lou could have easily offered him 7x8 in the summer and he would have been fine.  Or, after watching the last 40 games, he could have just traded his rights for a pick and washed his hands clean.  After trading his 1st round pick and Raty I guess that would have cemented his firing, which would not have been a bad thing for NYI.  But Lou was only thinking of himself, just like BO.  They both deserve each other to be honest...

BO's contract is probably going to be right up there with Huberdeau as two of the worst in the NHL.  They both played it right and signed at the exact perfect time for themselves.  IMO, however they are both going to have resentment from teammates.  Kinda like Loui when he was here.  I am sure his teammates didn't like the fact he was getting paid $6 million to play on the 4th line.

This could be the death of Lou's career.  If Bo reverts back to his 50 - 60 point pace.  And that pace was when he was a younger man. Players don't usually get better after 28. It was a perfect storm this season of Bruce run n gun coaching, where he was never the one raked over for any defensive flaws.  But Bo's not getting any faster on the back check.

Of the two old dogs, Rutherford got one over on Lamoriello this time.

Proves though that other GMs, even well respected ones, can be taken to the cleaners.  Lou may have watched Bo in the bubble playoffs, and then adding in his performance here this season, concluded that even if it was a bit of an overpayment, he would inject the leadership, as a former captain, and more goal scoring. Making him a prime target, and he wanted to snag him before other GMs got wind of this late blooming scoring phenom from the west coast!

Benning was drooling for OEL for years before he landed him. Another example of a GM with tunnelvision about a player, failing to see the player has fallen off since you were first enamoured.  I'm not saying the same thing happened to Lou with Bo, but it just shows that any GM can be had, and JR and Allvin can wheel and deal with the best of them.  Where the "Benning" in the deal process is on the other side.  Makes me optimistic about this management finding a new home for Myers, or Garland, or even Boeser too in order to improve the team next season.

.. and here I heard he was “playoff Bo” ?

.. I doubt his regular season ever gets better than 40 pts..

clearly he was pumped to dump here.

Great job by Canucks Management to identify the player to trade and make it worth more.

    BO SCORES!  BO SCORES!

    after its too late.

Bruce Boudreau coaching not only made hockey fun again here for fans, It had side benefits.

His pond hockey, just-have-fun "system" allowed for Bo to go for it.  Don't worry about defending, just score baby.

Upping his price, so we could land Hronek.

Another one;  Maybe Kuzmenko would never have re-signed, which he did before Tocchet had really got going here. His first impressions of playing here on his first NHL team was BB's pro-offense "system".  I don't know if he would have signed if he'd had a full season's dose of Tocchets tough love.

This is what happens when there are no playoffs for the fans in 10 years. (bubble doesn't count, no fans).  Playoffs starvation are gonna get the fans a lil loopy.  Canucks nation has fully embraced the baby Canucks.  How many gonna spray paint their bodies blue and green and make the trip down to Abby?  Probably a few 'Nuckleheads

Love to catch a playoff game there.  I was debating buying tix for Sunday's game if it was needed.

Last time I went was when it was still Calgary's minor team, and when the Comets were in town.

ps.  What a stupid idea it was to host arguably our most hated rival at the time minor league farm club. The only time it got full was when the Comets came to town. I remember it was a great atmosphere, but it looked like a mini saddledome with red flame graphics flooding all around the arena.

Lamoriello never discloses contract terms so when someone asked he used a pirouette.  It's obviously a joke. Really no different than in his other interviews.

Lamoriello has always said that contracts are too long these days.  He's known to want deals to be capped at maximum 5 years.

Ledecky is co-owner - really doesn't sound like he would be someone that would meddle:

“The owner who becomes the GM or the owner who thinks he’s a GM has a fool for a client. We hand that over to Lou and let Lou do his job and that’s what he’s trying to do. Every day we’re trying to go out and win a game.”

“The bar is that Lou is in the Hall of Fame, Lou won the GM of the Year twice, I’m neither,” Ledecky said. “And neither is [co-owner] Scott [Malkin]. When you have somebody who’s got that track record, you let them do their job.”

Well if it was a joke, I've just never seen a GM make one like that.

Kind of a cynical response. He didn't have to go there. On the eve of a major player signing for the team.

But chalk one up for JR/PA for maximizing on Bo's momentary value.

You are probably right but then again Ledecky or Malkin might have really liked them some Bo, and willing to pay premium to lock him down. It can happen to anyone...who owns a sports franchise. I'd have trouble keeping my fingers out of the pie.

    https://www.vicnews.com/sports/gm-benning-takes-over-hockey-operations-for-nhls-canucks/

Benning explained that Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini “does not interfere with what [Benning and Green] do. He listens, he asks questions, then he lets us do what we need to do.”

    Lou is lousing it.

At least with Benning it took a few games in to realize he probably just signed another the too-long/to-much-money contract with a player...........again. But I don't think I've ever heard a GM put it quite like that before the player had even played one game for him yet. Not in public.

I like how the reporters thought he was being funny. He didn't blink, he actually looked a little annoyed.

    "you want the truth?"

Maybe another case of too-much-meddle-owner there?

I'm not going to get into specifics here, and these are in no particular order, but just to note how many additions, re-signings, JR/PA have brought in already who will, or may, be competing for spots this September.

I just like how this new management group is always active all season. No "day to day"  or "we ran out of time" bumbling. Benning seemed to do most of his deals after the season ended. Seemed like it anyways. He'd hum and haw, until other teams had already acted, and he felt pressured to make any deal and grabbed the sloppy seconds from other teams.  Gluing macaroni on paper.  Easy to ignore advice by eliminating nagging departments like President and Chief of Amateur Scouting, and go all in on his tunnelvision choices either draft or FA.  Virtanen...Joulevi...Eriksson....Sutter...Gagner...Gudbranson....OEL..

So I am pumped that a lot of the "major surgery" is already done. Still some to go, but maybe we are so conditioned to Benning's unpreparedness and leaving things to the last minute, that we can't see we are already on the way.  Still work to be done, and some of the new younger players need to be tested for consistency. But so would any new player coming in this Summer.  I like how we already have a large competing training camp.....with some potentially decent pickups.  And/or valuable pieces to add to another trade deal.

Of course JR/PA will still be targeting a third C like Barbashev or a Gavrikov to add to the blue line. But it just doesn't feel like such a desperate open-ended crap shoot that I felt during Benning's reign, at the end of any one of his underwhelming seasons.

I thought this retool would still take a few years before this season.  But now I'm stoked for next season. Not to be contenders, but just to be able to watch a competitive, structured, decent team who should make the playoffs.
