Google Debbie Downer, then you'll get it.

I have said this before on here.  "Fan" is short for "fanatic".  Fanatics don't spend their time looking for the most logical, rational, contrarian or pessimistic viewpoint so that they can seem like a big thinker to the other fanatics.  Saying that "all that matters is a cup" will lead you to nothing but disappointment.  I know that my team, of which I am a fanatic, has a small chance of winning a cup.  There are 32 teams trying and only 1 gets it every year.  So I would rather be entertained and escape in thinking that my team is maybe a little better than they are and have a better chance than they probably do.  If every fan had your attitude, there would be nobody cheering for 70% of the teams and the league would fold.

I’ve been saying no more than 14M for both for weeks, changing my tune now makes me a hypocrite.  Would rather be a “downer” than a hypocrite.  Sorry if I’d like to see more in the defensive side from Hughes before committing big money.  My opinion, you don’t have to share it but no need to get personal

What team to you cheer for?  I'm a fan of the Vancouver Canucks.  I think Hughes is the most exciting Dman I have seen play for my team, ever.

What does exciting have to do with competing for a cup?  How is over paying an RFA in the short term any different than a UFA in the long term?  I would’ve preferred a bridge with money left over for other roster improvements.  I want my team to win a cup I don’t really care how exciting they are doing it

I don't agree at all about Hughes.  He was a beast in the bubble and will be back stronger than ever.

With some pressure off of him with OEL taking big minutes, Hughes will thrive.

Vegas figured Hughes out in the bubble and it carried into last year.  He’s got a long way to go to be a number one.  How long does he keep needing help before this contract is bad?  If he gets there it’ll look great but as long as he needs help the money is not there to provide it unless we give up something else to go get it. My mind giving him 6ish on a bridge left money to upgrade his partner

I agree that QH's salary is high in my mind.  I was a bit surprised.  BUT, the media are suggesting OEL is not the #1 D and that position is QH's.  Give QH the appropriate defensive partner and things are just fine.  This isn't the worst possible outcome (some of the trade proposals for these guys were though).  Biggest downside in my mind is similar to Myers' salary......a bit too high but not ridiculously high and he's still valuable to the team.  This is not a LE deal.

Agreed, it’s not terrible but a player that needs the right partner is not a top player and the money we’ve over paid him for the next couple years is not available to pay for said parter.  We are going down before up over the next couple years based on the these contracts, using Ferland’s LTIR means no depth, trade flexibility this year, it won’t be there next year for raises/depth nor the year after.  There is no real money coming off the books until Myers is done in 3 years so these guys better be lights out otherwise we’ll struggle to tread water the next few years

If I’m being completely honest, I’d rather see Petey for 6 years and Hughes for 3, but maybe Petey just needs that feeling of not being tied down, and we’ll be able to extend to another good contract in a few years.

Overall, if these signings happen in the amounts they’re rumoured to be, this team is looking super sexy.

I agree, Hughes setting himself up to be the whipping boy getting paid more than OEL when clearly his on ice play is not there yet and setting Petey up for a big pay day in 3 years while leaving no money for depth this year and raises over the next two summers.  Worst possible outcome for me honestly and very good chance we’ll regret it

Some pundits, such as Friedman, have made comments about Benning wanting to have some cap space after signing them within our 14ish million of room.

Yes, but as above, it sounds to me like Benning is trying to leave some space. If Hamonic is traded or retires, I'd like to see Benning lock P&H longer term and then find a Hamonic replacement once we get the cap relief from injuries after the season starts.

We have >16M with Ferland’s LTIR and with Hamonic still on the roster. Using Ferland’s cap on Hughes and Petey hurts the team next summer.  Using that 2 extra M for depth and flexibility this year improves the teams chances of success over the next three years vs losing a player for pennies on the dollar to attempt to tread water over the next 2 off seasons as Boeser, Horvat, Miller, Hoglander etc… come for their raises after EP and QH set the precedent for money over success

As for Hamonic’s money on anything but a short term D solution at this point is crazy.  Using it long term and having to potentially pay him next year makes the team’s future cap troubles even worse

However this plays out it looks like he royally screwed us over. Like Hairy said if he's so worried about his daughter just stay away and get a separate residence, or quit hockey altogether and hide inside his house forever, build a bomb shelter for all I care. He can afford it. Otherwise how is this guy not smart enough to understand the situation when he signed the contract? I would have to guess he doesn't care about his team, teammates, or his honorability in that case.

Sorry I'm trying to reserve judgement but I'm having trouble with one.

If his daughter just went terminal I forgive him and so should anyone with a conscience

There have been some mentions here and there about Benning wanting to have room with the cap after signing them, so it's likely that he's playing hardball to get them signed to a  very reasonable deal (aka lower than expected) and not the players being greedy.

they should be able to split 14M fairly between the pair on bridges and leave 2 M for cap flexibility

Speculation on Hamonic.  Folks should remember his child is fairly ill, one reason he wanted out of NYI and went to the Peg was to be closer to family.

Even if he was vaccinated, which he would be entirely wrong not too. It isn’t going to hurt a big tuff hockey player.  Why are people still not able to comprehend that they have all survived vaccines, if not they would have had measles, polio, typhoid and small pox.

the vaccine will not kill you, very few side effects, but it won’t stop you from infecting others who can’t take the vaccine like kids under 12 and certain high risk groups that depend on herd immunity from the rest of us, like those with cancer and childhood diseases, like Hamonic’s kid if I recall.

makes coming home from the US road trip a lot different than it used to be.

maybe he doesn’t want to come home, give his child a hug and do to some kid in his locker room partying that week before all over the US, his child catches Covid.

that would make me as a parent think twice.

Don’t disagree with this sentiment but this was the state when he signed the contract so unless the state has changed he did not sign the contract in good faith and it looks really bad on him.  As I said previously I will not pass judgment without the facts because the state could have changed or this situation could be covered by an out clause in his contract, we will not know until it’s over.

If Schenn is a regular in our top 4 we’re gonna have a bad time.

I know everyone loved him there to stick up for Hughes but I don’t think he has the foot speed or the shutdown ability that Hughes needs in a partner.

I see our top 4 being:

    OEL Myers

    Hughes Poolman

And then a bottom pair of:

    Juolevi Demers

    or

    Rathbone Schenn

Without Hamonic the D goes from thin to emaciated.  I will save my judgment until the facts come out but the whole thing is bizarre and disappointing.  Only a few things in my mind will justify this run around and general shafting of the team and fans

Kinda curious, as a fan would you be prepared to start the season without Petey and Huggy if it meant getting a better deal? Or are you dead set on must have them there for the first day of the season at all costs?

Part of me is already prepared to look at lines that don't feature Petey and Huggy for a while.

10-15 games is recoverable and gives valuable NHL minutes to both Rathbone and OJ.  We only start to play chicken when we start to slip 2-3 games below .500 after the 10 game mark.

Gadjovich brings just as much grit (if not more) and can score and go to the net.

Its either Gadjovich or MacEwan for me and right now Gadj just looks way better.

The other spot needs to go to an energy guy that can kill penalties like Highmore or Lockwood. Having two guys that don’t kill penalties in the bottom 6/7 is a bad idea.

Totally agree, there were two open forward spots in the lineup with Podz pencilled into one.  With Sutter and Motte out to start the season Gadj and Lockwood are moving to the top of the pile for those spots early.  Chaisson will give everyone a run for their money for the last spot as an experienced NHLer if it’s all preseason smoke and mirrors and over achievement

I think our main PK unit will be

    Motte Dickey

    Myers Poolman

It isn't ideal but the sky isn't quite falling.

No argument there but what happens when one or both of these guys are in the box?  The second PK unit is what OEL-Schenn? After that?  PK is not PP you need to get the puck out and change, exhaustion leads to GA

I'm not arguing about what anybody thinks should happen, I'm stating what WILL happen.

edit: at this rate Jack will be playing in Hughes spot for all we know

be prepared to be the only 2 surprised people. rathbone is a shoo-in, and juolevi is in a battle for his life with hunt for the 8th spot.

Where did I say OJ and you really think going with only four D that are experienced penalty killers will move us towards the playoffs?

  16. Really don’t see Rathbone in the starting lineup.  Playing him 12-13 minutes ES a night doesn’t do anyone any favours.  That spot will go to who ever can play defence and kill penalties.  He’ll need to push OEL off the PP to have any consideration for that spot but the team fundamentally needs 5 D that can kill penalties.  The team has transitioned from development to competing and funnily D take penalties so I just don’t see both Hughes and Rathbone on the left side.  Rathbone needs to be developing his complete game in the AHL vs being a spectator in the NHL

My only issue with this is, MacEwen will never get to play C under Green.... Gadjovich still needs time in the AHL... look for Di Giuseppe to take that spot instead!

If Sutter is out long term, JB should pick up E. Staal to be our 4C!! can't go wrong...

I liked Staal as depth even without Sutter out (historically inevitable really)
