  1. So lets say that Bo gets sent down. Would you rather have Domi stick with Arizona, giving Horvat a even bigger role with the Knights? Or have Domi sent down where the Knights will be a stronger team with a better chance at success? I've been struggling with this one a bit since they both have their advantages. I think I would want Max to stick in the NHL. Whats everyone else's opinion?

  2. Despite my order looking like:

    1) Nylander

    2) Ritchie

    3) Virtanen

    4) Ehlers

    5) Kapanen

I'll be psyched if regardless of who we get. They're all great prospects, and I'm ecstatic that we'll have one in our system on June 27.

I feel the same, about being psyched regardless of who we get. Like everyone else I have an opinion on who I want but I will 100% back who ever we select. The way I look at it is that scouts have a much better look at these players than me and most of CDC. So I will be excited no matter what. I'm curious if most people share this opinion though. How many people are going to instantly put down our new prospect simply because it wasn't "their guy"

  3. I don't want to start another draft thread. But I am very curious about this. So I'm just going to post it in here and hope to get quite a few replies. Will you be upset if the Canuck's pick one of the players you don't want?

It appears that there's a group that wants a European and another group that wants a North American. I realize that people aren't making their choices based on which continent but it simplifies things and helps explain the question. So if you like Virtanen or Ritchie would you not like Ehlers or Nylander if we draft them?

  4. I don't think he will go ahead of us, but I think his game translating to the NHL is almost as big of a question mark (if not more) as someone like Nylander. I'm always wary of early first round picks being used on kids who use their size to dominate players in the CHL leagues. It takes a completely different level of strength to be able to do it in the NHL.

Look at Kassian, an early first round pick who is only just starting to figure out how to use his size against NHL players now, at the end of the season, almost 5 years after he was drafted. Then you have someone like Beach who just never put his game together, ever.

I know they all develop differently and don't play exactly the same, but it's something that worries me.

I wanted to take a look at the size and weight of the "big three" in our division. Here's the top scorers from their teams (not in any particular order):

    Kings

    Carter 6'4 212lbs.

    Kopitar 6'3 224 lbs.

    Williams 6'1 189 lbs.

    Ducks

    Gezlaf 6'4 221 lbs.

    Perry 6'3 212 lbs

    Bonino 6'1 196 lbs

    Sharks

    *Pavelski only 5'11 190lbs.

    Marleau 6'2 220lbs.

    Thorton 6'4 220lbs.

    Also have:

    Burns 6'5 230lbs.

    Couture 6'1 200lbs

Hertl 6'2 210lbs. (A lot fewer points because of injury)

I just don't see how a guy like Willie Nylander who's 5'11 176lbs. according to ISS is more appealing. Why not take the risk with Ritchie who has a better chance to excel in our division in my opinion. They both have risk, but I feel as though a smaller players risk sadly increases if they're playing against bigger teams. If we have a more physical core than a smaller goal scoring player would be able to make it. But right now we have Kesler and Kassian as our only truly "big" players. In my opinion, Booth, Higgins, Burrows etc. don't really give a beating to anyone on the Sharks, Kings, and Ducks.

  5. For anyone who hasn't watch this highlight package: I strongly suggest you give it a watch

Edit: sorry for not transfering the video right onto the board. Not exactly sure how to do that

Edit: Edit: Thank-you elvis15 for the help!

  6. No it's not a question of work ethic. I can't comment on his attitude but I've never heard anything to that effect. Most players have some consistency issues in junior.

He was injured last year and when a young man is growing into his body so quickly it is occasionally hard for them to adapt their game to fit their skills. It's not a question of his ability or willingness IMO. He just needs to learn to adjust and bring his A game every night.

Alright good to hear. I had consistency issues in my game as well. It had nothing to do with a bad work ethic, so I completely understand. Ritchie seems to be a pretty solid potential pick.

  7. Consistency is his biggest issue but that's not uncommon.

Everything else is NHL quality. His shot is a plus, his skating is a plus, his hockey sense is a plus, his physical game is a plus.

    He's a very rare package.

Well let me tell you this. The guy was voted best body checker by the OHL coaches in the Eastern Conference. He was also voted 3rd best shot in the Eastern Conference. Don't know why people here thinks that he was bad in the playoffs either. Peterborough isn't a great team, and he's a big reason why they were able to eliminate the Frontenacs (a big upset), with Ritchie scoring the GWG in game 7. Then they were swept by the best team in the Eastern Conference, no biggie. Ritchie ended up with 10 points in 11 games, 5 of them goals. Not that bad. And he's not all about scoring either. I mean Lucic's best season in the NHL is 62 points 79 games. You will find players putting up 100 points every season. Does that mean that Lucic is just an average 1st liner? Ofc not. He will do pretty much anything for the team. Stand up for his teammates, crash the net, bring physical presence and score goals. I believe Ritchie would be a good pick at 6th. There isn't a lot of risk in him IMO, and there is also a potential high reward there. I don't think his hockey IQ is low at all. I think people here are afraid that he'll turn into a Kyle Beach v.2 (bust). I personally believe Ritchie is way more talented than Beach though.

Thanks for the analysis! He seems like a guy who could really be helpful in our division. I question bringing in someone small like Ehlers. It's not a knock on him personally but I just think our schedule (playing against Perry, Getzlaf, Brown, Backes, Carter, Richards, Thorton, Marleau, Burns etc.) so often would be hard on most smaller prospect. Jeff Skinner is a great hockey player but I don't think he would be overally effective here either.

As for the Beach comment: I've always got the feeling that some fans have become scared of drafting a big guy because of the buzz of Tom Sestito this year. Everyone kept talking about how he scored so many goals in junior. But now he's a 4th line enfourcer. I'm not saying that Sestito and Ritchie are similiar in any way. But I do think people are afraid of a Beach or Sestito V2.

One last question: If consistency is his biggest issue, what's his attitude like? Is he a hard working, character guy or is his consistency problems based off a more underlying character issue?

  8. I've been researching these prospects for quite some time now. A lot more so than other years. But I have not made up my mind on who I would like to see picked.

Presuming the top 5 are gone, there appears to be a lot of different opinions on who we should take. But what I'm wondering is what worry people about Ritchie fundementally? The other players in his range have all had a weakness clearly identified. But with him all I hear over and over is that he's big and won't be able to use his size in the NHL.

Why won't he be able to use his size in the NHL? I hear he has good speed so it can't be that. Is his shot weak? does he lack hockey sense? Does he shy away from the physical game against bigger people? I would like a solid opinion on him that doesn't talk about him being too big.

I've read that he is weak defensivily. So I already know that and don't think it is a make or break deal. Defense can be taught and we have Horvat, Gaunce etc who are great in their own end. We need a player who can excel offensively in my opinion.

  9. Wouldn't that be a mistake when they need another top defensemen Ekblad and Fleury are the top first round d-man, wouldn't it be a mistake not drafting a d-man?

They would LOVE to get Ekblad I am sure. But I was saying if he's gone they seem pretty certain that it would be Draisaitl. Why are they so sure? I don't know.

But that's a good question you bring up. I think it would be a mistake if they draft a dman JUST for the sake of drafting a dman. I totally understand drafting for organizational needs. But in some situations it can be taken too far. If Edmonton would take a forward than they would definitely be making a trade to bring in some D-men. Which in my opinion is the better move than drafting a guy way too early because of organizational needs

  10. Yes Trevor is a nice man and all. BUT if the team starts losing next season and goes out the playoff picture the blame game will start. People will start to point fingers and Trevor could be the target. See the thing is when fans see their team start to lose, some will start to blame Trevor for his inexperience etc. Look at Obama, how is was worshipped early on and when he started to make bad decisions he become an ordinary president.

I think that Trevor should get a decent amount of time before people start blaming him for anything. If the teams does bad the next 2 or 3 years than I would think the fan base will still blame Gillis (since it will still mainly be the team he's built). After than I would think the fan base would turn to blaming whoever the new GM will be. If that person is gone, than it should be Lindens turn to take the blame. So he should get about 6 years to turn things around before anyone can rightfully blame him. I hope that he can do a good job and finally win a stanley cup... even if it is as president rather than a player.

This speculation is based on worst case sceneario. But its very hard to predict our fan base. So maybe I'm wrong.

  11. Wow, I did not expect a GM firing today. Whos the next potential GM?

So far I have heard people bring up:

    -Feaster (Yikes)

    -Trelving

    -Naslund

    -Nicholson

    -Gilman

-Burke (presuming he's done in Calgary and whats to be a GM again)

Can someone else with more knowledge expand the list?

  12. Deflating day for me personally. I am a huge Kesler fan but I prepared myself to see him go today. There is a very, very,(very, very) small chance that we could win the cup with our current roster this year. So holding on to Kes just means a worse draft pick this year. I would have been satisfied if Edler was traded instead of Kesler as well. Just something to gain some solid prospects and create a better chance on a high draft pick. Seems like the rest of the season the Canucks will be stuck in mediocrity

  13. If Kes ends up going to Phi or PIT, i would venture a guess that CDC is going to explode saying that Gillis needs to be fired! Everyone is going to presume the Ducks have the best offer and that he won't take it because we are in the same division. When, lets be honest, we have no clue what the proposed deals are and what teams they are coming from. It's all speculation treated as facts.
