And what do you think we are going to spend our cap on next year?  We are gonna take as much expiring bad money for picks as we can.  Driedger is a real good start.

Do we even have cap next year, lol.  Are they shelving Pearson and who knows whats going to happen with Poolman.  We need to shed cap by giving away what little assets we have as no one wants our loser players.

I wonder if Minnesota has the first-mover advantage of this. Seems like they were the first to think outside of the box and now all of the bottom feeder teams have caught whiff and are piling on.

Is the influx of teams willing to take on cap retention as a third party broker creating more competition such that the return will be comparatively less than what Minnesota's been able to get for their past two deals?

Not like they got much to begin with a 4th and a 5th rounder, but it is being aggressive to get more chips as currently a playoff team to be able to move a bad contract in the offseason if they choose to.  A stanley cup contender unlikely but who knows who might come out of the west this year.

Take him for next season?? he's pretty good, way better than Martin and Delia....

He was a 1 hit wonder and wasnt great in the playoffs.  Too much against the cap for a cap strapped team even with 50% retention.  There should be capable backup goalies with NHL experience in free agency that we dont have to spend much on.

Maybe that's why Rutherfraud said what he said at the press conference that aren't we tanking?  Maybe the orders were given to Boudreau to tank and he wouldnt do it, so they changed him out with someone who would follow Management orders.  Maybe they were criticizing him publicly to make it incredibly uncomfortable for him, which would be incredibly low but who knows with this team.

Bruce gave us 15th overall at last year's draft

What about the other teams in the league that build winners without top picks.  Eventually yes they will go through a bad cycle but 10+ years of darkness and we have no prospects coming.  Its not just about the 1st round and even then some of the best players in the league were not drafted in the 1st round.

Demko is not ready to go yet. And it’s unlikely that Martin gets claimed. If he does, good riddance to his salary because he’s been  very mediocre this year. I actually hope he does.

Really he only became mediocre/trash after Demko went out with injury.  We were riding him at the start of the year when he was the only one getting points.  Its tough because of the way this team defends but yeah at this stage he can't be 1A/1B tandem, only a backup and that's now debatable as the sample size is bigger and teams/shooters have more of a book on him.

Regroup and try to re-sign him in the offseason (unless some team offers him something ridiculous

You think he'd even entertain coming back after being treated as he has this year?  No way unless you way overpaid.

While he scores goals and wins faceoffs, he's not great defensively and doesnt fit a 3rd C role.  They have to hope Miller is a C or they better have a way to trade wingers for a C or get someone in free agency that can fill 2C/3C role.

Spencer Martin in his last eight games:

    0-8-0, 4.95 GAA and .847 SV%.

More teams have video of him now and have scouted him.  Initially he started off on fire getting points in every game he played.  But when asked to do more than capable of we see the result.  He's fine as a back up, but in a starter tandem not so much.

I totally agree it’s not all on goaltending but assuming you played some hockey you know how it goes… Getting bailed out by your goaltender really affects the mojo of your team. The team has no confidence or identity right now. The MVP is on the shelf and they’re feeling it.

At this point they are better off trading Demko in the offseason.  He's already showing signs of his body breaking down from the wear and tear, plus he will probably age out before we are any good.  Find a decent 2.5million dollar goalie on a 1 year deal in the offseason and ride with them and Martin next year.

Goaltending has  been terrible all year including Demko since the beginning of the season. It had a lot to do with our start.  I can’t recall many teams getting through 50 or 60 games with two minor league goaltenders and coming out with a winning record. I just think that it’s hard to properly assessed this roster with us bleeding goals like this.

Demko was playing near Vezina caliber last year before his injury and they STILL couldn't make the playoffs.  The AAA chances this team gives up is baffling, its either they dont care and just looking to stat pad and get paid or they are incapable of basic team defense.  Probably a little of both, how many coaches cant fix this god awful PK.  That is a clear and obvious sign.

Minnesota did it with two players, not one. And their 8 year buyouts were a lot worse. We save almost the entire contract next year so we can make some big changes. The year after it’s only $2 million. Years 3 and 4 it’s $4 million but by that time the cap is supposed to be up to $92 million.  And then the last 4 years is $2 million.

It’s obviously not the ideal situation long term but I think JR is at least considering it.  Unless OEL agrees to wave and we eat 50% of the contract for 4 years. Not sure that is any better to be honest as it hurts up a lot more in the first 2 years.

Except Minny had/has a prospect pool and relatively deep defense core to help absorb it, we clearly do not.
