Over Vilardi and Glass? Fire Benning please.

This guy was a 10-15 pick

Why did we spend #5 on him??

Is every single scouting service who has proved Bening wrong in the past with his flight of fancy first rounders, wrong .......yet again??

THIS time Bening knew better than they did?

We may have gotten a good player, but we didn't get the BEST PLAYER POSSIBLE, and this guy is reallly really skinny......another, "Oh, wait till he...." pick?

Why can't we pick the guys EVERYONE says are better, and physically prepared to play in the league that THIS team plays in.

Benning is not a smart man, I've watched it for years now, he should be filling scouting reports from remote arenas for a real GM to read,

This guy cannot do the simplest things right, and I'm sooooo sick of it

Petterson may be good, just like Joulevi might be good....but they aren't the BEST AVAILLABLE, I feel like Benning wants to make these of the board picks to "Get his scout on" not to stock this team with the best players possible.

A general manager should not say while looking into a camera "We don't got no defensemen" An executive who can't even structure a sentence can't be expected to make sound decisions, being an assistant GM doesn't mean all that much, many GM's keep thier "Road dogs" around, to help them deal with the job (Nonis)  it does not mean they are qualified GM's

Benning is in way over his head, has been for years, and I don't understand why Trev (Who does not lack intelligence) supports it.

Again, might well be a good player, but wasn't our best shot at success.....what else is there to say, that hasn't already been said,

This has been such a weird 4 years......like a mixture of Keenan and Nonis.......I don't know, whatever.....It's not my team, maybe Aqua needs to lose money through the team to qualify for other tax shelters......whatever......it's so lame now, it's not even worth being ruffled over.

  2. It seems this forum has become a summer home for the mentally feeble..

"aparent from day one he wasn't an AHL player??!?!"

That's because he should have been playing in an AIR HOCKEY league down at the bar, that's how bad he was, AHL players were making him look like he didn't belong on the same ice as them, and guess what he didn't.

All they did this season was try and get Jake to not embarrass himself, he spent most of the time hanging back and he didn't play like he belonged in te AHL, let alone the NHL

The delusion on this board is amazing,

Truth: Jake isn't very good, everything that could possibly be measured proves that.

Now, you will try and convince me a white wall is painted black, have at er'

As much as I too am disappointed with Eriksson since he signed with us, let's give the guy a bit more of a chance to redeem himself.

    1) We were all expecting good things, considering his international chemistry with the Sedins and the fact he had quite a good last year in Boston.   Both points seemed to be in his favour but in the end seemed to do nothing for him with us last year.  Perhaps we should have tempered expectations at least a little.  He's being paid a lot, granted - but to expect him to save our team by scoring might have been unrealistic.

    2) Let's not forget he injured his knee, and I think it had an effect on him through the remainder of the season.  So he was basically a write-off after early March.

    3) When he first arrived in Boston, he started his first season slowly.  (Though not THIS slowly).  His point totals increased appreciably the following years until he came here.  Perhaps he is the kind of guy who just takes a long time to adjust to a new system.

Eriksson hasn't shown us much at all, but you can't deny his reasonable point totals over the years.  Prior to this season he had 63 points which simply isn't possible without having high level talent.  Let's hope this coming season he can start showing us some of that.  Even if he only manages to be a solid 2nd liner, combined with the boost we SHOULD be getting starting as early as next year and absolutely in the following couple of years in our young talent, it should all come together to produce a more exciting team to watch if nothing else.

We were NOT all expecting good things, many of us called this situation well before it happened, it was a stupid move by JB

Like the Virtanen pick, The Joulevi pick, the Gudbransson trade (that was the worst, we were a laughing stock), making a 4 line center our "foundational player" like not properly scouting Tryamkin, Oh hell, let's go all the way back to his choking on the Kessler deal. Sutter Gudbransson and Sbisa (minus a 2nd rounder) terrible outcome, a team took our star and we got back standard or below standard parts in return. His "great scouting" has been totally disproven

When I listen to JB speak he doesn't sound very intelligent, and I actually suspect he isn't

I wish Trev would just take over as GM, at least I know he's intelligent

If we draft a center (which is very likely), we could have Sutter play RW and take face offs for them. That'd be a great way to shelter them.
Or, we could have great center depth through all four lines.

Trev only did that when they were grooming him to be a center, after his first two years he was full on center and had the 40-50 assists to prove it

I'm still not sure Sutter understands assists count in your scoring totals too,

But I'm ALL for moving him to wing, as a 20 goal winger I'm ok with him, but he doesn't know how to distribute the puck, having a guy like that play center for you is a killer, it chokes your offensive game

I feel like if the Canucks want Jake to play 'big' it would only be fair to have some support.   IMO trading Tanev for another young, big, physical and good skating forward might be the ideal winger for that line, and the line up desperately needs it anyways.

Not a bad Idea, it's tough to be a tough guy when you've got no back up. Look at Edmonton, nobody is messing with them for the next few years,

Toughest NHL line-up i've seen in a really long time

I case no one has mentioned it's well known Bure took special "supplements" in those days, (The Tony Twist protein shake) Not sure if testing in the NHL has improved since then, part of me thinks it may have but part of me says that's impossible since no one ever gets caught and athlete's are willing to do anything to get an edge

He didn't mention off ice workouts or how they are monitored, so I'm no help there. I got the impression that the weight they want him to show up at is conducive to where they want him for speed. That is the perfect spot for him. I mentioned how Bo got the crazy leg speed from season to season  and he mentioned how he saw Bo ripped in the dressing room working out every day to get ready for next season. Nothing more came of that conversation.

I got the feeling the Canucks see Jake as a 3rd line winger who can hit 40 points, 80 Pims and bang and crash + 2 way hockey,

    Hmmm, interesting,

It is one of those  unanswered questions : How exactly did a player we were told had deficiencies in his skating end up having none? (Bo)

Maybe the Canucks lowering the bar a little for Jake is just what the Dr. ordered, letting him settle into a third line role with less pressure to score is a more realistic target for him.

I sometimes wonder how bad of an influence McCann was on Jake, By all reports McCann was a real piece of work and it's well known that they hung out a lot.

32 and a Canucks season ticket member if that does anything for you.

People here can't stand it when someone gets some insider info, they go bonkers, jealousy I suppose, but  I still find it very odd behavior.

Personally, I say thanks for sharing that, and I take people at their word until they give me a reason not to. I'm also going to assume you have better things to do with your time then make up stories about meeting Jake f$%king Virtannen, I sincerely hope everyone else does as well,

Did he mention anything about how closely his workouts will be monitored throughout the summer? Or did you get the impression it was up to him?

Also, I'm not a fan of this micro-managing an athletes weights, Igor Larionov's book has a great section in it where he talks about refusing to lift weights as the Soviet trainers wanted him to be stronger, he said (paraphrase) "I'm training for hockey not weightlifting, Why not train for what I'm actually doing on the ice and let my body find it's own ideal weight"

In Jakes case I would prefer to hear about him doing on ice drills to instill muscle memory in all different situations so he isn't thinking out there, he's already strong, lack of hockey IQ which basically means not knowing the right play at the right time, or having to think about it are his main weakness, that and in game endurance.

Approximating game scenarios and drilling them over and over, along with long controlled scrimmages would build his "Hockey IQ" and his hockey (different from stair-master) Cardio. The thing is, you can't add muscle and train like that at the same time,

I'm a little concerned now that he'll be pumping iron all summer be the same player only bigger,

Great to hear about the attitude, but the fact that adding muscle is #1 means he can't do a lot of cardio or heavy on ice work, the muscle would come right off again,

I hope everyone knows what they are doing, this kid came in under-skilled not under-sized, why is he working on his size?

You do know you point is based on utter fantasy right? And you are also aware that there are hard facts that you projected your fantasy over right? And you also must be aware that the Canucks didn't pull him aside and say "Jake, you're fat and unmotivated so you're not allowed to score this year, next year you can score 30 in the NHL, but this year no AHL scoring, ok?"

Try projections based on what is really happening rather than daydreams

Jake was not an effective AHL player this year, that is a fact, what happens next know one knows, but the betting odds aren't good.

I agree on Jake . This kass love is silly. ! good game. He was literally booed at home on numerous occasions. Look at his stats for this year pathetic. I highly doubt Jake turns out to be like Kass Jake will be a much better player. He is already capable of what Kass does. And this is from a guy who prayed for Kass to turn it around. One game means nothing.

It was 2 games, 2 play-off games........that Kass won for the oilers, but Jake is already better?

Is there a video of Mc David saying Jake is amazing and was the best player on the ice that I missed? I can find the Kass one....

And I'll takes Kass' 7 regular season and 2 playoff NHL goals over Virtannen's 9 AHL goals too, thank you

To another poster above, e one that made every weak excuse in the book, and made every, unfounded by real evidence, forecast for Jake's career going forward: Stop arguing against facts, you have none to back up your claims , it's obvious and embarrassing to read.

The best opportunity we have to solidify our future core (Besides the draft) is the fact that Reinhart is available

Virtannen + Joulevi for Reinhart if we have to, Virtannen + Tanev +2nd 2018 if we can get away with it,

Then add this years pick to our decent crop of young defensemen and we are solidified at center ice, the teams biggest problem is solved: Horvat, Reinhart and 2017 1st up the middle will solidify is team for the next decade, one more year of sucking, we target the best Defensemen we can get in the 2018 draft and this team has everything  needs to start the next era

When it comes to solidifying your center ice position no price is too high, Joulevi will be an average to good NHL'er not a top pair guy, we have plenty of guys like that and Virtannen needs to go, because if he struggles out of the gate this next season and there are no indications that say he won't, his worth will crash in the trade market

Now is the time to make ballsy moves and set this team up for it's next era

The reality is that in today's game you need the "tough" guys that can also skate, shoot, pass, defend, hit and score. The tough guys that can play. Those players are relatively few and far between. I would guess that there are probably 15-20 players like that in the NHL and three of them play on Edmonton. Fighting isn't as big a part in the playoffs as it is in the regular season so I think the need for someone who can fight is debatable. Although I think there is value of the threat being there. In the playoffs though, it is all about the end result - the score over 7 games. A degree of "heaviness" can certainly wear your opposition down over a 7 game series if used properly in the game plan but having a john scott out there for 6 mins/night isn't going to help you win a series.

Yes, everyone agrees on that, the toughness has got to come from regular players, but Hockey is all about momentum and as so many teams know a well timed fight by a regular roster player can sway the momentum, and I think you will start seeing some fight in the playoffs starting today

  16. 31 minutes ago, Salacious Crumb said:

Nice post dee. I remember when we had the s.o.b. line - Strudwick, Odjick and Brashear. The good old days of bench clearing brawls were awesome. Having said that the kind of toughness I miss is the heart that Ohlund showed. He got into a couple of fights (once when he had a bad flu) with Iggy knowing that he would lose. Yes Olly was strong as an Ox but Iggy was definitely the better scrapper. My original point was that the twins don't offer any pushback when even Gretzky and Lemieux each got into several fights (or at least got 5 minute majors for 'fighting').

Ohlund is an interesting story in that after several years in the league and not fighting he made a conscious decision halfway through his career that he needed it as part of his game (Probably with the big hits he was throwing he was sick of having guys come after him and expecting him to turtle) I was sitting right by the glass for his first fight, it was against Chris Kunitz who was with the Ducks at the time. Ohlund laid a monster hit (can't remember if it was on Kunitz or not) turned around and with the angriest face I'd ever seen him make yelled "Come on!" to no one in particular, he just wanted to fight SOMEONE and get his feet wet I guess, so Kunitz rolled up and....well, it was his first fight, didn't matter that he lost after that things were noticeably different for him, he fought maybe twice a year give or take but he never backed off again and on a couple of occasions went looking for the fight........you know I just realized something, the Iginla fight your talking about was in the playoffs no? at the end of a game? I seem to remember THAT was the tipping point for him, it was in the following preseason he started fighting, I may be remembering this wrong but I'm pretty sure that's the way it happened, anyway Ohlund's "Soft Swede" rep (and near Ulf Samuelsson, Vladamir Konstantinov dirty hitter rep) was gone over night, as soon as he started backing up his hits no one ever accused him of being dirty again, and he was always talked about as someone not to mess with by opposition commentators, he wasn't a great fighter by any means, but the way players treated him changed drastically.

+1. I was thinking the same thing about todays "hockey players". What happened to those who not only stick up for their team mates but also their selves. Watching Kassian the other night "running over" the competition reminded me of play off games of old. Too many times over the past recent years I have watched numerous Canuck players manhandled and absolutely nothing happened to the instigator(s).

We seem to have a couple of players who may have the ability to "put up a fight", the problem or concern is, are they willing to or wanting to?

Or are they ALLOWED to might be a better question, we've become one of those borring stuffy "We have to stay out of the box" teams

Why do you need to stay out of the box? no one taught you to kill penalties?

Also, some would-be fighters might be worried that if things get rolling the'll be on thier own with no back up., that is NEVER a good feeling

I think we need a physical hit leader to get the team going in hits. Like Torres, and Kesler were for us. The team followed there lead and played physical as a group, Edler was destroying people. Hopefully Jake and Guddy can take this team into that direction, like Maroon, Kassian and Nurse have taken Edmonton into a physical direction.

I don't remember Kesler hitting at all, he would irritate people with hacks and whacks but hitting? I don't remember that at all.

And Gudbransson never has and never will be an NHL hitter, he doesn't have the skill, he is useless as an in game physical presence and only able to do anything after the whistle, he can't initiate only react, so people need to drop the idea that Gudbransson can do any more than push shove and threaten to kill people, once the game is being played, he has no idea what the hell is going on

  19. 13 hours ago, Salacious Crumb said:

Agree. Although not a hater of the twins the lack of even giving the old Geoff Courtnall facewash just as the linesman shows up has always bugged me. When Linden was captain he got facepunched a couple of times because it was the right thing to do.

Knowing Bo, Ben and Tryamkin all dropped the gloves this season gives hope that we will be tougher to play against in the future. Hopefully Gudbranson can fill the void left by Bieksa. Edler used to be a devastating hitter, perhaps with more toughness in the lineup he gets a little more of that back in his game.

It's true that back in the day Linden, Courtnall, Adams  all these guys would have one or two fights a year, back in the day nearly every Canuck would go if he had to, even  Ronning who was really small had a reputation, not for fighting but for stickwork, if you came after him he would spear or slash you in a heartbeat, he HAD to or he never would have made the NHL at his size,

Back then you were tested, EVERYONE was tested and if it was know you wouldn't defend yourself you were eaten alive, verry few player got a pass on that, and only real superstars got it: Gretzky, Turgeon, Craig Janney was know to be an assist machine when he came into the league so he got a body guard as well, and that was the other thing, if you had one of those guys he needed a body guard at all times, like Bure when he was assigned Gino, Bure was smart though and got his own reputation going with the Shane Churla elbow, people were careful comming up to hit Bure because if they didn't get knocked out with the Elbow then Gino was there to do the honors

I laugh when I think what would have happened to Brad Marchand if Gino had been around......or anyone for that matter, Ronning would have broken his ankle with a slash

It seems odd to me that we went into that regular season game with the Bruins with only DALE FRIGGING WEISE to fight back with, all due respect to Dale, who is a decent player and a tough guy, but he's not a great fighter and doesn't scare anyone

But here's the kicker, you can't have those guys on the fourth line anymore, you need the toughness on the FIRST line the FIRST pairing because THOSE are the guys who are on the ice and define your team, I don't think you spend your top pick looking for toughness Virtannen is proving that, but from the 2nd round on, I wouldn't mind if Trev and Benning focused in on some guys who not only fight, but might actually SCARE some people, it's those guys that stop the other teams from picking on you like Boston and Toronto do to us

And lastly, when you get these guys you don't hire a coach that blabs on and on: "Don't take penalties NEVER TAKE PENELTIES" I always say, penelties are to be killed not avoided, sometimes you have to turn the guys loose and they shouldn't be afraid to make a statement or benched when they do, I hope Green realizes that this team could use a couple of line brawls to repair it's reputation

And BTW Linden was by no means a great fighter but he did a lot better than "getting face punched" He holds victories over Shaun Avery, Rob Ray (seriously, he also got the instigator and broke a knuckle on ray's face, defending Messier believe it or not) A draw with Keith Tkachuk and averaged a little over a fight a season in his career, he was like a Jannik Hansen type of fighter, didn't scare anyone and it wasn't his role but if the bell rang Linden was there. And I think that's the biggest problem with the team, not that we don't have some super heavyweight but that as a team there aren't enough players like Hansen or Linden, regular players who knew exactly when and where it was necessary for them to show up. The opposite of that would be the Kesler Bieksa type fighters, those guys (Especially Bieksa) ARE good fighters but it seemed they only dropped the gloves for selfish reasons, if someone pissed THEM off they fought, not the best way to establish team toughness,

Wen I think about that elusive team toughness quality I think of two things as the best examples: Linden charging in to fight Rob Ray when he slashed Messier and Hansen going right after Kadri , Riley had just leveled him with a hip check but Kadri crossed the line with some other play (Can't remember) and Jannik went right after him, in both cases ZERO HESITATION, those are the kind of fights, regard less of outcome that builds your team a reputation, and makes the Marchands think twice

Come to think about it, I can't EVER remember Beiksa or Kessler fighting to defend teamates, and they certainly never helped the twins out if they were being targeted, I remember several occasions the Twins were being abused and Beiksa did nothing, I remember Mark Methot knocking Henrik out of a game once and the out of town commentators were confused as to why Beiksa, who they had heard so much about, wasn't doing anything, those guys were useless as far as team toughness went

Gaunce, as a 2-way player, as produced in every level he has played in, except for the NHL so far.

He is pretty much a PPG player in the AHL.  So if you extrapolate it to the NHL, and if he's given more ice-time and legit NHL linemates, he should easily put up 20-30 points as a 3rd liner.  Gaunce has got the size, the strength, has improved his footspeed a lot (not quite to the level of Bo though), and is doing the little things right.  It's way too soon to write him off.

Personally I think Grandland was a mirage, I don't think you'll see anything close to what he did this year again and I predict he's out of the league in 3 years

I wanted to keep Gaunce anyway, but the injury report makes me feel it is definitly the right thing to do

You need solid bottom 6 players you develop yourself in this league, the revolving door of minor league stiffs has to stop somewhere, let's take our time with this guy and see how far he can go, he our first round pick who has shown he can bring some qualities the team needs, I think in order to grow a solid team we need to keep guys like Gaunce too,

So dumping him for little to no return is your ideal strategy?  He is 20 years old.  He has size, speed and skill.  Not all players hit the ground running in the NHL, sometimes you have to be patient and let them develop.   As I said, let him play an offensive role in Utica next year and see where it goes.  He has a ton of potential, you don't give up on that with a 20 year old.

My strategy is not in play here, I told Trev and Benning to quit calling last year and figure it out for themselves,

My observation and projections are based on quantifiable data, things that exist in reality, like a player's objective performance as recorded by stats and the predictable actions of those around him based on how they really feel about his place going forward.

Jake did not score in the minor leagues this year, that is not good for a #6 overall who was drafted to score in the majors. Historically speaking GM's are usually quick to rid themselves of their failures, if the disappointing player remains, so do the memories of that GM's mistake. That is why it is likely he will be moved, this totally depends on whether he has any fans out there amongst the league's GM's, do I personally think it's a good idea? I don't know, it seems hard to belive Jake can't play in the NHL with his physical gifts, speed and agression are hot commodities in today's game and I have to think there are many teams out there that would love to take Jake on as their "Kassian project" (Look what Zack did tonight, he's the toast of the town and in the copycat NHL that drives jake's value up this summer) But if Jake is going to stay in Vancouver, he needs to score, and based on his pro record so far, I don't know if people here realize how unlikely that is to happen, it could happen, but it is unlikley.

It's not like this wasn't predicted either, things are playing out the way many experts said they would, a north south kid who is bigger and stronger than his competition can dominate in Jr playing a game that requires little thought. In the NHL that doesn't work, Benning gambled on Jake magically sprouting skills he had never displayed even in Jr, all the signs were there, the lack of assists the reliance on out muscling opposing players, "One trick pony" goal scoring, Jake was a flashing red light from the get go, I still don't know what Benning was thinking, I suppose he thought the team would stay competitive and if Jake only amounted to a bottom 6 energy guy he could still end up a fan favorite who helped the team  sell tickets, but when the team went down the crapper, and he realized he didn't have the luxury of making anything but BPA picks it was too late.

This having been said, he comes into camp this year with a shot at changing all of that, will he do it? The evidence says HELL NO, skill problems are one thing but put commitment and discipline problems on top of that and you have the perfect recipe for NHL failure.....still, the opportunity is there and Jake knows it, maybe we will see a whole new attitude come fall maybe he will prove the critics wrong.

But I predict Vancouver and Buffalo will be working hard on a deal for Reinhart prior to the draft, although Reinhart has scored, Buffalo has not warmed up to him, fans are ok with the idea of trading him as he has become the scapegoat for team they feel should be better, if that deal takes place it's going to include Jake or Joulevi, maybe both, and based on our needs and the longterm recovery of this franchise, Reinhart is EXACTLY what we need, he would be a massive jump forward in thew rebuild, and remember Trev wanted him and tried to get him at the draft, he was quite open about that, Reinhart has been in our sights for as long as he's been in the league, this summer is the perfect storm, I think Buffalo will want Jolevi, and we will give him up along with Tanev and something else, with our current situation on defence we are actually in a possition to give both up and still have our young D core intact, I believe we will push hard for them to take Jake instead, but with Kane already in Buffalo it would seem odd for them to want another power forward with baggage, or maybe Jake will be Kane's replacement? As I'm sure Buffalo still want him gone and will leave him exposed to Vegas if necessary,

Playing with Folingo would probably be the best role model Jake could ask for.

In conclusion, I see a lot of fantasy projection on this thread, poster's making predictions not at all rooted in the reality of what is actually going on here, if one chooses to read the tea leaves it's a decent bet Jake doesn't make training camp, let alone the big club, not OUR big club anyway

    But time will tell.............

Agreed.  He spent this year developing a strong 2 way game, next year will be focused on developing the offensive side of his game.  Virt, Boesser, Dahlen should bring a high level of skill to Utica next year.

What are you guys talking about?

You're acting like some big barrier was crossed or something accomplished

All I see are no results a lot of excuses and A LOT of hot air

There is no substance to support this "Strong 2-way game" he developed, you're just parroting soundbites you've heard in the media, he's the same player that was sent down last fall

And as for this prediction that he will slot in to the line up next year, do you really think they are going to keep a bottom 6 player they drafted 6th overall?

Why doesn't Benning just wear a dunce cap to games from now on?  He might as well if Jake is going to be plodding away in the bottom 6 which for a guy who couldn't crack 20 Pt.s in the AHL is about all you can expect, he is going to look like an idiot everytime Jake is on the ice.

Jake needed to start SCORING this year in Utica, he 100% failed to do that or show any sign of being an offensive talent in ANY level of pro hockey,

Virtanen will be gone by the fall, hopefully with Tanev and a pick for Reinhart most likely for someone else's 1st round blunder, in the hopes that switching problems will help people  forget who's fault the problem was. Regaurdless, he needs to be dumped fast, because unless he were to start scoring right off the bat next year, his worth is about to take a major nosedive, there are still people who will gamble on him, and with his physical tools he probably can play on someones 4th line in the NHL, but there's still going to be hope on some GM's part that he might be more.

Are St. Louis sick of Yakopov yet? Because that's a deal that would make sense, Lazar would have made sense as well, but that ship has sailed
