Sutter shouldn't have offered the comments for public consumption, but I have to agree with him.  Kid needs to be playing in Utica.  Nucks are messing with his head.

    They aren't messing with anything,

We have a GM who is in way over his head and is being taken to the cleaners right and left, Goldy shouldn't be here because Benning shouldn't have made such a horrible deal,

But Benning is not even close to being smart enough to be an NHL GM so what do you expect

  2. 2 hours ago, SILLY GOOSE said:

Nope.  He's only describing that part if the game for what it is.  It's a professional league so some things are going to be talked about in public.  If Goldy can't handle that knowing Sutter meant no ill will about it without having his feelings hurt..........but I doubt that's even close to being the case.  He seems like a good kid that wants to be a solid player.

    Sutter? SUTTER?

Sutter does not have sufficient respect to do that kind of call out, his own game needs a massive "Balls" transplant, he should call HIMSELF out, his intensity level is pathetic and has a lot to do with the "Blah" identity of this team,

I'm not going to skewer Sutter for his comments.  I think he felt that somebody should come out and say this because else nobody is.  Goldobin seems to be shy of physical contact.

None the less he's very clever at finding seams in the slot obviously because he had at least 2 grade A chances against the Sharks on Apr 4.  Young players I think can perform very well to a certain level based on their natural talent.  When they arrive at the highest level, they find that they need to do things differently to remain effective.  Certain things they could get away with in junior or the AHL don't always work any more so there needs to be a little learning and adjusting of their game.  Jake Virtanen has some learning because he can't dominate physically at this level the way he was used to in the WHL.  Sven Baertschi had to learn the physical side and go to the dirty areas before he started playing well.  Goldobin is in the same boat.  Neither of them are going to knock bigger players over very often but they can certainly do things physically to gain advantage.  The Sedin's, who are 180 and change are masters of this.

For me, this is what Sutter is talking about.  It takes courage, but as you get used to it, any player can be effective.  As Goldy watches Baer and Stecher and the Sedins, he will learn how a smaller guy can add a certain amount of physicality to his game.

Nobody has a problem with Sutter critiquing Goldy or thinks Goldy's play has been anything near acceptable,

The issue is doing it through the media

Sounds like a d!ck tbh, there is quite a few things Sutter needs to work on, only difference is Sutter not a rookie.  How can a center playing 2nd/3rd line minutes not top 20assists in a season?  And when has he shown any balls in a Canuck uniform?  Seems to be his line is where wingers go to die.  If I am Henrik Sedin, I am calling a closed door meeting now and telling my teammates to stop throwing each other under the bus via media.  As if this team doesn't have enough problems or issues...

    This just about covers it

Good for Miller seeing Sutter's F$%k up and trying to un-do the damage, Miller is like Linden V2.....how's his skating? Can he play 8 mins on the 4th?

I never once liked the Sutter deal and am always weary of centers who can't put up assists. It's clear he the infamous "Elite bottom-six" type player who throws salary structure into turmoil, except that an elite bottom sixer plays with "balls" and I have never once seen that from Sutter, I've never seen much of anything from him actually. Just marginal talent that doesn't excel anywhere in the line-up but isn't bad enough to be removed from it.

Get this guy off the team, I never liked him as a player and now I don't like him personally.

Although considering his family knows all the ins and outs of hockey, this could be his way of trying to orchestrate an exit from Vancouver.

I do not think Goldy is very good either, I don't think Benning knew what he was doing in that deal, we got a player who had serious issues with his game and a silly conditional pick for a monster of a player, Benning was taken to the cleaners,

Be that as it may, if I had anything to do with the Canucks professionally, I would NOT be blabbing about it to the media using language that was less than classy. I suppose Sutter is pissed because coming from his background he could tell right away that Goldy wasn't very good, not underdeveloped, just not very good period and was irritated to have an anchor placed on my line.

But spouting off to the media like that was dumb, it won't change anything and will only make playing out the stretch harder on everyone.

I really hope Dahlen ends up being something because if not, we might as well have just given Burrows and Hansen away.

Lucky for Benning Brock came in and made him look good, because, with The Panther's making him a laughing stock last spring, this year's the deadline debacle, two botched 1st rounders and a bizarre signing frenzy of NCAA players that looks like he's trying to sign everyone and can't tell the difference between a good and bad player, I would hope the days of Mr. Benning were nearing their end in Vancouver.

Aquaman s%$t canned Nonnuts when it was clear he was a less than effective GM, I'm hoping he does the same with Jim because it feels like the same incompetent GM to me......but Trev stays, of course!

I think with Olli it's wait and see mode. Let's see if he can gain some strength and how he looks in camp next year. He's definetly getting the 9 games unless he has a terrible showing in camp and the only way I see that happening is if he has an injury. I think the kid could play next year but am not opposed to another year of waiting if he's physically not ready.  Europe would be a great option though if possible.

I would agree except I was quite shocked at the way he was dismissed last year, that indicates a long way to go, I'm not convinced he gets 9 till I see him in camp

Ok. Well, based on right now, I don't think he is strong enough to play in the NHL, so I guess he should consider a different career. Lol.

I'll call Trev and break the news

I keep seeing something along these lines and it is very, VERY far from 'definite'.

First, we need two of our D moved/injured/lost in the ED for there to even be roster space to give him 9 games. .

Second, he needs to work his arse off and get a LOT stronger this summer and show he's even ready for this level of play for even 9 games next season.

That's a LOT of dominoes that need to fall before anyone is declaring anything.

    true

He was sent packing early last camp, and was clearly nowhere near NHL material,

Smart money says another year in Jr. then the "A"with call ups, maybe a year in Sweden or Switzerland somewhere in there too,

    maybe 2020 he'll take a regular spot

Remember, this guy came out of nowhere to grab a slot on the draft rankings, hype was a big concern especially considering the talent he was playing behind

We may have clearer image of what we got now, a good mid-level prospect with a really good chance of making the NHL

Just don't expect more than average to good

I don't think he signed an AHL contract, so he can't join Utica anyways.

For next year, I think they will try Boeser on Bo's line to see if his defensive game is up to par, then juggle him accordingly. I am hoping for a 15/15 statline for 30 points (while playing a good defensive game) if he sticks full time next year.

I would have thought him helping the Comets would have been a motivator for him being brought in like this, I expected he would head there as soon as the Canucks scedual is done,

I'm sure they want Virtannen to have a look at how to be upwardly mobile

  10. 12 minutes ago, Chip Kelly said:

1 game in and the Boeser hype train has started. Let's not put expectations on him yet of being a 20 goal scorer next year right away.

Though I do think he has the maturity in terms of his personality and style of complete game playing against older players in highly competitive games getting a chance to get in the weight room has prepared him very well.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he says he had a long season to Benning and sits down with the Canucks and doesn't join Utica at the end of this year. Having a taste of the NHL he will be hungry to make it full time like Horvat did without getting seasoning in Utica.

If he keeps improving I don't see the need for him to join Utica for the playoffs. I rather him train and get ready for the big club.

See if a guy like Goldobin with AHL experience is allowed to join them in their playoff run.

C'mon man, there are a lot of prospects who are brought in under different circumstances and most wouldn't have that expectation, but let's be honest here, he's not being brought in to help the P.K or check on the third line, or to develop slowly over a number of years

In Brock's case, and I believe it's warranted, the expectation is absolutely 20 g next season,

he's coming in to play top 6 and score goals nothing else, I would guess he expects it of himself as well

I see no reason why he can't hit 20g next year, he will be put in every position to do it

  11. What a shock today,

I thought he was maybe still a year away, not only that but had serious doubts as to whether he would sign with the Canucks,

Not knowing about the early game, the first Canucks new I hear today?

    Signed, Dressed, Scored, First Star

It was being like told Jordan Subban has been named team captain

    Crazy times

Man wouldn't that be perfect.  I won't hold my breath but it's a nice thought.

That would be a whole new kind of awesome, providing of course he's good with the added responsibility.

Playing center is really hard, huge difference than playing wing, it's going from the easyest position in hockey to the most difficu1`watch their wingers and D work overtime as they nonchalantly hover around the top of the slot, pretending to cover it but really hoping for a cherry pick, I wouls rather he stay at wing then be one of those.

I always said the real failure of the west-coast express era (Aside from the lame name, who came up with that? The Nome under the Dome?) was the weakness at center ice, Linden wasn't top 6 anymore, Henrik wasn't ready for top 6 and Morrison was really a #2, As Bowman says: "when assessing a team the first thing I check is their top two centers"

It's no wonder our two most successful playoff teams had "Linden/Ronning" "Sedin/Kesler" the only two times in history we've had our top two centers together we've gone all the way to game 7

Great to hear. Hope it translates. Can someone remind me if it was the Canucks that wanted him to gain weight or slim down? Either way I'm glad he's making progress to becoming the player he can be.

I Don't remember seeing any prescribed playing weight for him

Very encouraging to see he"s interested enough to SAY the right things,  I still maintain that if he's not shaping up to be a top 6 guy then he will be playing elsewhere, this summer is critical

I recognize what the twins have done here but I have to agree. Their play sure has fallen this year, especially on the defensive side, a lot of times they seem very disinterested to me.

You guys fail to understand what it is the twins are doing,

They are TRUE troopers and willing to do what it takes to get this team to the next level

I.E Henrik and Daniel are frontline tank commanders

I guarantee they will not suck like this to start next year, but they want to start next year with Nolan backing them up.

C'mon, first the frigging mumps, then all of a sudden the twins hockey I.Q drops 50 pts?

Their game has never relied on athleticism, so this whole "Lost a step" theory doesn't add up,

The kind of boo-boo's we've seen are the type committed by guys who don't know what they are doing, that ain't the twins, never will be.

I'm sure most of you will stay in denial about this, and then next year talk about how amazed you are that they've found their game.

This is actually a great sign, it shows the entire organization is willing to do what other teams have been doing for years, and that the Canucks could potentially be better sooner rather than later.

The Twin would like to retire after skating the cup around Rodgers ice, do you really think there is ANY shot at all of that happening if we don't get some top notch new talent? and get it FAST? This is how the Penguins, Blackhawks, Kings, Ducks, Bruins ect ect. got thier top line talent, it's how we got the Twins, it's how we got Linden..

And by the way, if you don't think shenanigans is standard operating procedure for NHL franchises, go look up how we got Bure, we basically lied and said that he had played more games then he had and was therefore eligible to be drafted, total B.S of course but nobody could prove that he HADN'T thus the Canucks played the system for a pick and had the player in on the scam,

But in 2017 that could never happen right?

Anyway, I support what they are doing and look forward to the incredible return of their hockey sense early next year

FYI he had a lot more fans than Deb. Just read through this thread.

I say leave the thread up until the end of the season out of respect and also that it will take that long to just get used to the idea of the Canucks without Burrows.

I always wanted someone to ask him if he had ever seen this thread and if not show it to him, explaining when it started etc., and ask what he thought. Maybe someone has.

    Never thought of that,

I would never recommend any player ever look at this board and I'm sure the team tells them the same thing.

But in this case........I think he should see it, it takes a very special player to have something like this happen, it really is a tribute like no other.

hahaha 5-6years. That would be absolute worse case scenario and he'd be traded before then. Virtanen can compete for a spot in the next couple years and will be on our team in 3.

3 years from now?? Not a chance,  it doesn't work like that

These kids do not have unlimited time, they are supposed to have been sufficiently scouted so the team who drafts them knows they at least know how to play hockey

If Jake needs 3 more years, to get back on NHL ice then he is a terrible hockey player for his draft position one of the all time great Canuck blunders

There are new prospects coming in every year, the Veteran prospects have about 3 years TOTAL after being drafted to pull it together, if they don't they become some other team's reclamation project, or they just fade away

This coming year is it. Jake needs to play his way onto the team, either at training camp or during a call-up or that's it, management will probably make their final call based on what they see at training camp, if he doesn't show up motivated, in shape and hell bent on making the opening night roster, I believe they will seriously try to move him, I know they have already tested the waters to see who might be interested (Remember Benning's prospect for prospect nugget he let drop?)

Hopefully Jake goes to Gary Roberts this summer....Hell, ask the Sedins if you can go to Sweden and train with them this summer, that might even get you a serious look as their linemate

Even if he stays here this summer which I think is a terrible idea, but if he does, LInden is a conditioning Freak who once he retired dropped a bunch of weight and started doing long distance cycling, he's probably in better shape then some guys on the team now, Trev still trains daily and is focused entirely on cardio

Thank to Alex Burrows I know Jake has Trev's number, Spending the summer doing insane cardio with the most respected man in franchise history would influence jake in the two areas he needs it most, character and conditioning,

And as for Trev could there be a better use of his time as president, then making sure the first major pick of his regime turns it around? This kid needs some mentorship badly because if left to his own devices last summer all he did was party and expect to be given a roster spot then he needs to be supervised?Who is watching this kid? Ready to put boot-in-ass if thing get off the rails? I think his dad might want to be a little more hands on too.

Horvat was actually ranked lower than 5-10 by most which made him quite a huge sleeper pick. However, I would defnitely be pleased if the Nucks grabbed Villardi with their pick (sleeper or not). Also, I would say that Barkov is easily a better forward than Horvat at this point offensively and defnsively, not to take anything away from Horvat as their is an argument to be made for him being the 2nd best forward in that draft which is incredible.

But anyways, this is Virtanen talk, so I should probably make a comment on his play. Very nice to see him getting a goal last night, and considering how all I've heard is that his game is improving...maybe this is the confidence booster he needs to start racking up the points?

I don't know about that, Horvat's stock has shot up like a rocket, he's considered an NHL star now and he plays with such confidence it's almost like he knew it all along,

Barkov can't seem to stay healthy long enough to really establish himself the way Horvat has, it's great to have offensive ability, but if your only on the ice for half the games, there is a lot of something you aren't doing very well

    I'll take Horvat any day

Virtanen is still a work in progress.   He is a great passer and a fantastic skater.  His problem is his other skillset: he hits like a truck.  And in a market/on a team with so little physicality, this can be an easy option for him.  He has to be a Neely type: hold the puck, make plays, go to the net like Horvat and provoke the occasional penalty (a la Burrows.)

    1

I don't recall any great passing but if what you say is true, lets convert him to center! A guy with size and speed who can get in position in the slot, defending his own slot or in  the neutral zone to distribute the puck, is our #1 need. No more dum dum winger hockey either, you HAVE to be smart to play center, the responsibility is huge.

Maybe that's what Jake needs, more structure and clearly defined jobs, like a center, wingers have waay too much free time on thier hands if they don't have self discipline it can be a detriment.

    Agreed,

Bertuzzi was actually a lot like Kassian, u would always see flashes of sublime skill, between the boneheaded vacations, there was never a doubt with Bertuzzi or Kassian, even though the latter never found his full-time skill gear> Still there was never any doubt either was a supremely skilled player. Jake dominated kids in JR trampling them while going north-south, that wasn't Bertuzzi or Kassian although both could do it, there was way more to their skill set, Jake has never shown anything close to what Bertuzzi or Kass did, and to be honest there was never any reason to think this guy would be a significant offensive player. I think Matt Cooke might be a decent comparable, without the over the top dirty plays, or Justin Abdekator

Both of those players were hungry though, sometimes Jake reminds me of Jordan Schrader, A guy who just doesn't seem to want to stand out.

We have one magic bullet to end this situation, one chance is all Benning has and he would be a fool not to right the wrong' Vegas will gladly take on his contract, it wouldn't even bother them, to them  it would be great value, and taking him would be a sure thing

Ya but with Dallas he was young and going into his prime. Now he's older and about to go into the decline stage. My guess is that the last three years of his contract are really going to hurt this team.

The real problem is Benning's golden parachute deal,

It's BS when people's say pro's don't need things like up coming contracts to keep them motivated and accountable,, these contracts are bad

Unless you are signing your own homegrown players, 6 x 6 is not something anyone should get on their final pro deal, that's the deal you give someone in his prime 25 26 years old, after the age of 32 it should be 3 year contracts max, after 35 2 years, and if you make it to 38 and are still playing 1 year deals,

But you don't give a guy his final big payout upfront then expect him to bust his ass for 6 year as he physically decline

The NHL should have performance reviews every 2 years on long term deals and if they aren't being earned teams should be able to take the player to arbitration. Ihave no idea why the NHL tolerates such assinine contracts as Yashin DI Pietro, Luongo, Hossa and to a lesser extent a deal like this, you shouldn't have to offer bad deals to get talent, there should be restrictions on the type of deal you can offer

Only caught the 3rd too but that performance won't keep him in the league, as unnoticeable as he was before. Gaunce needs to start doing things that aren't open for interpretation and that are of tangible benifit. to his team, something that shows up on the stat sheet. Gaunce needs RESULTS not potential, he needs to stop LOOKING good and DO something good.....Something "Real Good" to keep his NHL chances afloat. He needs to shine out , Big hit, Fight, Goal, Slick pass, MAKE A PLAY (Dumping the puck in on a line change have checked the other teams 4th line and not made any previous defensive errors does not count.)
