We're going to lose someone that we don't want to, but only one.  It's the same for every team.  There is no way around it.  We can't protect everyone.  We should be aware of that but we shouldn't let the fear of loss dictate how we ice our best possible team now.  Fear is the only enemy.  GCG!

Looking at the list right now it seems obvious that Erikson should be left unprotected,

It seems he will have an average season, not one even close to worth the contract though,

If they leave him unprotected they can keep another forward, if he's taken they are rid of the contract, if he isn't then fine, moving right along

That was a golden parachute deal from J.B to L.E and everyone knows it so it won't make Vancouver look bad to potential free agents, Erickson was blessed to get the contract and I doubt he would be peeved much by having to take his millions of dollars to Vegas for a 6-year vacation.

He's the solution to keeping Gaunce

Whether Gaunce is worth keeping is another topic altogether, the thing that concerns me about him is that games go by, then I'll read a boxscore, see his name and say" "Was he in the line-up?"

Gaunce is one of the most invisible players I have ever tried to watch

Gudbranson is slowly building a reputation for himself around the league as one of the toughest fighters in the game. I know Matt Martin or anyone else will think twice about running a Canuck when he's on the ice. He throws those rights with mean intentions and Martin got a taste of it last night when he got dropped.

Uhh......didn't Gudbransson get dropped? I mean he waws right back up, but if you had to call a winner, it looked like Martin, sorry but that's the truth.

Doesn't matter though, those two could fight 10 times and it would probably be 5-5 and had any of those bombs really connected it would have been lights out for Martin or anyone else, That is legitimate deterrent

We have room on the Canucks for a small playmaker.  Right now he looks good with JV, so maybe both should just stay in Utica?

If Valk can't skate then fine. But I seem to remember that he could hang in training camp so......

WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU JB?! SKILL! SKILL! SKILL! IT"S RIGHT UNDER YOUR GODDAMN NOSE! SHOULD THE LEAFS SEND NYLANDER TO THE ECHL?!?!

SIGN THIS KID AND GET HIM UP HERE!!! WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE!!!! HE CAN FRIGGING SCORE YOU DUNCE!

Send me the hockeyDB of this "elite skating powerforward" that you played with.  What level of hockey did you play?

    Yeah,

I didn't know everyone here but me is supposed to have played with "Elite  skating power forwards" now I feel left out

Would someone mind loaning me their " "Elite  skating power forward" for an afternoon? just so I can say I did?

Dave Tomlinson has noted that there have been a few times this season where Jake has been seen being the last one on the ice for practise, and the first one off it. Almost being late once.

if that's not laziness then what is?

IF true, those are horrible optics.

If I got dropped into a Canucks practice today I would be horrible, screwing up drills and whatever else they do  right and left, the one thing I would probably do right is the easyest thing to not screw up, be first on and last off.

If a fan knows to do that then an NHL player in the doghouse has no excuse not to, he knows people are watching

Yes, it has been worrying me that Juolevi's numbers last year were largely due to playing on a very good team with the best line in Junior hockey often in front of him, especially on the PP. Also, I know that Benning liked him at the World Juniors last year but, once again, he was playing behind the best forwards at the World Juniors. As the #5 overall pick you would hope that he would be a dominant player in the OHL in his draft+1 year but he is just one of several very good defencemen in the league. Let's hope he picks things up. I am seeing too many excuses -- "third assist", "great first pass", etc. He is not physical but he is supposed to be very good at both ends of the ice. So he should be putting up reasonable point totals and very good good +/- numbers.

Nail on the head my friend

    at #10 overall great pick

    at #5 ??? Wasted pick

You do not shoot for a "solid" player in the top 5

but hey, at least we've solved our "lack of 3rd assists" and "Hard but not overly physical" issues

Having elite hockey sense doesn't determine your NHL success, though. We've seen this team draft guys with high hockey IQ, most notably Cody Hodgson, Patrick White, and Jordan Schroeder,  but they never amount to anything in the NHL, but journeymen players.

As the saying goes, you can't teach talent.

THAT is what you go for in the draft, as much high quality talent as possible, and that is what we did not do

Would also like to point out that this was a very logical pick.

So basically we are in a good position to sign two forwards this offseason.

2 of Lucic, Eriksson, Brouwer. Lets say we luck out and get both Lucic and Eriksson

Our line up would look like this

    Sedin Sedin Eriksson

    Lucic Sutter Hansen

    Baertschi Horvat Rodin

    Etem Granlund Dorsett

    Gaunce Grenier

    Edler Tanev

    Hutton Gudbranson

    Tryamkin Biega

    Sbisa

    Markstrom

    Miller

So basically that forward line up is pretty Jam packed especially with Boeser coming up (Who i think will be better than Tkachuk) not to mention Virtanen as well.

Our D core has been undergoing massive changes to reshape it. Juolevi will be able to fill into our D before Tkachuk would fit into our forward group. I am really hoping that Juolevi improves enough to make Edler expendable so we can trade him while he still has high value.

Anyways enough of my Ramble basically I like it because we got a potential top 1-3 D who fits our needs more than a player like Tkachuk does. I also really like Finnish D Idk Why

    HAHAHAHA.........ohboy

If the Sabres wanted him gone, why give away assets when you could just give Kane away by exposing him to the expansion draft?  There's no doubt whatsoever LV would take him for the final year on his relatively cap-friendly contract.

Pure and simple, the Canucks cannot afford Reinhart and Tanev doesn't even come close right now.

    Think man!!!

just because he's exposed in the draft does that mean vegas will have to take him??

NO! They don't have to take him any more than other teams have to trade for him,

for your info he WILL be exposed in the draft and he will be passed on, because no team in this league wants the headache he brings

so basically when you are struggling to get playing time.. almost the last guy on the ice and first guy off.. and people are wondering why the coach doesn't trust him or give him more ice time.. cdc bitching about tryamkin not willing to go for conditioning stint in utica and have no problem with Willie not dressing him in game.. but they are all over Willie for not playing Virtanen more when he's not even putting in the extra effort in practice.. hmmm

    Wait a sec

Is there any evidence Jake has done anything other than ask to be treated like the high pick he is? I haven't heard of him being lazy in practice or having a bad attitude

Personally, I don't belive in the "Treat everyone the same" philosophy. The company has considerable assets invested in Jake and I believe he should be given every chance to pay them back

Eriksson will turn it around eventually.  He'll have at least one good streak of producing points this season and will probably revert to the mean for his production from the last 3 or 4 seasons.  Confidence is shot right now.  He needs to focus on the little things that make goals happen and not worry about the result for a while.  You can see him visibly deflate when he misses a good chance right now, what you want is a renewed vigor every miss until you score.  Never give yourself a chance to feel defeated, just give it 100% and stay focused on what will get you to your goal (literally)

    I agree,

I don't put much stock in his current drought, he'll end up getting his 25 G and 50 PTS

problem is it won't make one bit of difference

well, it may make one difference, we may draft lower

Also, a big problem for the Sabres with moving a player like Reinhart is Kane's status with the team.  If GMTM isn't already looking to move Kane, the ownership will force GMTM to unload him if he gets in trouble with the law again.  Losing both Kane and Reinhart would cripple the Sabres' scoring.  They have only scored 22 goals in 9 games without Eichel and Kane.  That's not Canucks-level bad, but it is still not good.

GMTM will most likely trade Kane for a good D-man instead of Reinhart.  Unfortunately Tyler Myers didn't perform well for the Sabres after his rookie season.  If he had, the Kane trade would never have happened.

I still say there is a deal to be made if we take Kane off of their hands, give them something decent like Tannev and hopefully anything but a first rounder.

Make no mistake Kane is a negative asset, the Sabers would be thrilled to be rid of him and will give consideration to any team that will help them be rid of him.

As great as it is for them to have Reinhart, he is not their #1 essential building block, for the right price we could pluck him, I'm sure of it., and the Kane thing makes them vulnerable.

As far as Kane goes for us, buy him out at the earlyest possible date and know that during our early stages of rebuild we won't need to spend to the cap ceiling anyway. Thus the lowered cap[ from the buy out won't kill us

Perhaps we wouldn't need to buy him out, it's only a matter of time before he does something stupid again, and there have got to be some conduct provisions in NHL contracts to protect the teams.

If this continues past December if I'm Virtanen I tell my agent I want out and demand a trade.

He needs more minutes, here or in Utica. And he needs it now.

I wouldn't wait another minute he's having his career destroyed right in front of his eyes

Demand a trade, demand Utica........No actually, I don't see how  he could trust this team ever again, they have shown willful disregard for his and their OWN best interests

BTW It's Aqua-man who set this in motion and he's the one to blame,

WD has at least been honest, "Its not the try hard league, its the get it done league" it is not WD's job to develop Jake, if WD doesn't win he gets fired, its management's job to manage the assets,

Only in our case those decisions are made by the owner

Jamie Benn showed up to our rink a few years ago in late August, he was in town for a stag party and our coach scheduled a little exhibition game against him and a bunch of other pro and former pro/junior players.  He was drunk as a skunk and could barely skate, easily could of gotten hurt.   He went on and scored 63 points with the Stars the next season.

    AUGUST

    AUGUST is OFF SEASON

C'mon guys seriously, just think about this for a second: Your an NHL team, you pay some guy millions, he comes up and asks you if he can play beer league......Ok? Say your an insurance company, you ensure sports contracts for millions, the team wants you to cover the salary of a player who is hurt beyond a large deductable' they tell you that in addition to league game he will also be playing beer league, do you cover him for the same price? HELL NO! If at all you charge WAY MORE, now your the team again, ARE YOU GOING TO PAY INSURANCE PREMIUMS OUT THE ASS SO A PLAYER CAN PLAY BEER LEAGUE?

There was a case several years ago, a Red Wings D-man had injured himself in a sleigh accident, the insurance company stated that it was not on the approved list of physical activity, there were lawsuits all around'

    Seriously guys WTF

How exactly was the staff unable to prepare him for the season when he showed up 5 days a week?

    Put the knives away everyone!

There is a common misconception about physical fitness I will now clear up: People have vastly different capacities in reguards to cardiovascular conditioning. ZThat is to say you could take two guys who are the same height and weight, train them identically for 3 months, one guy would have improved %50 at the end and the other guy may only have improved %8. It doesn't mean the other uy is lazy or the training is bad.

You could also had guy A train %50 less than guy B and he STILL would have improved way more that guy B, I'm sure Jake busted ass this summer, but a lot of this stuff is in the genes, Jake may have reached his peak conditioning wise already, and is trying to strech beyond what his genetics will allow, It can be done, but it takes a lot more time. Some people are born with it, the Sedins, Linden too had incredible conditioning and i'm sure they worked hard, but don't crap on one guy who MUST have done all he could this summer.

And don't start giving Virtanen the "Vancouver" treatment, that ugly crap I had to listen to about Vey and whoever the guy was before that. call him out for what he deserves, but the whipping boy stuff is just poison. don't think it doesn't get back to the players when its bad enough because it DOES

So my buddies beer league team was playing against a team with a ringer yesterday...  Turns out Jake Virtanen had a friend on the other team and came out to play.

My bud said he shut him down 2 of 3 rushes on his side lol, but if there was contact theyd all be fukt, haha.

"Pretty classy move if ya ask me."

    virtanen.htm

Either you or your friend are %100 full of S&^t

It would be a MAJOR violation of Jake's contract to step on the ice for ANYTHING non-Canucks related

Unless it's part of team conditioning these guys aren't allowed to even play Tennis during the season, all their physical activity is totally under team control, think about it, they pay someone millions and he goes and gets hurt in beer league? Could cost ownership millions, and the insurance they have to take out on these guys? Do you think for one second an insurance company would pay out for a pro athlete who was injured screwing around in a rec league game? Do you think Virtanen would put himself in a position like that? He steps on the ice with amateurs and every nobody (Like your "Friend") would be looking to take a shot so they could brag to their other loser buddies about it.

No, doesn't happen, and Jake isn't that stupid

    Your lying

He needs to be on an established contending team

I've said since day one this signing is terrible, and I still believe he'll get to 55pts this year

This. I'd rather have Gaunce than 3 or 4 of our current forwards and he sees the imbalance for sure.

I sometimes think these kids do need to stand up for themselves in order to be noticed.

Most people had heard of Druoin last year but knew little more then the name. Stevey Y was not treating him like he was important and although it can seem douchey and bratty , I think what he did last year was the best move, he stood up and said "F$#k you Stevie Y I am important" all of a sudden all eyes were on him and he became an NHL celebrity. He then went on to prove he was no myth in the playoffs and now he's a star.

It's no secret Stevie Y doesn't like him, so if he hadn't done that he may very well have been another "Gee whiz I hope I make the team" pre-season prospect who was starting to get "Bust" whispers in the media.

Some guys need to be put into the frying pan before you know what they are made of, they play to their competition, and are totally different players in the NHL then they are in the minors

rI think the team should make room for Gaunce one way or another, and if they don't he needs to make them do something , because they are treating him like a minor leaguerI

Interesting closing statement from Gaunce in his Kenward interview.

The other 3 players were all asked what their goals and intentions were now and all three gave the standard answers while Gaunce said he would "be keeping that to himself"

I can't think of any scenario where he could not answer that question unless he has been taking MMA and he intends to beat the crap out of someone at the earliest possible opportunity. (that might be worth keeping to himself I suppose :) )

It might be some sort of "play me or trade me" type of thing, I don't think he has a ton of leverage besides the big body and draft pedigree, but it is a fact that he has been lost in the shuffle around here.

Watching Virtanen have the red carpet rolled out for him while Gaunce sat in Utica had to hurt. I'm sure he was thinking "I can play at least as well as Jake did last year, why the hell is he getting a shot and not me"

I wouldn't fault him for that either.
