  1. Juolevi and Rathbone, although both left-hand shot defenseman, would be the perfect modern-day defense pairing. The analytics in terms of zone exits, zone entries, and corsi-for would be off the charts. Juolevi has a bit more size and can better handle the defensive side of the game, and Rathbone is quick and not afraid to play physical. I think the two would complement each other perfectly, without sacrificing too much of the offensive or defensive side of things.

  2. Almost 1/4 of the season in and Virtanen has had significantly more good games than bad. He's hit the post a few times and his teammates haven't been able to convert on his set-ups, so he could have had a few more points. Definitely much better at puck retrieval, stripping the puck away from opponents, and playing hard to protect the puck when he has it. Very consistent night-in/night-out in those three aspects. I wish he was a bit more physical, but I can't be too picky.

Finally has some confidence and is getting his man strength. Green needs to give him some more ice time.

He should be on the point on the 2nd pp unit. He has a heavy shot and can catch up to anyone to prevent a breakaway.

Also should be playing 3 on 3.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him on the pk as well. Would get a lot of breakaways and opposing d men will have to be weary of that when he’s on the ice.

He should definitely be out there in overtime and play the PK.

  3. Excellent game. The team got off to a hot start but didn't let up offensively, scoring goals in latter half of the 2nd and 3rd period. In the Tim Schaller post-game interview he talked on how the team kept things simple by "getting pucks in deep" and that the "offense will follow." Excellent coaching where instead of sitting on a lead or scoring more goals, the emphasis was on playing the right way and things will come; by focusing on the process the results will naturally occur. Props to Travis Green (even tho I $#!**** on him after last game's debacle).

Great team effort. Our bottom-six set the tone of the game with their speed, play down low, and getting pucks to the net. Our top-six finished them off. Our defense was great, especially Edler and Myers in shutting down Barkov et al. And Demko made timely saves.

I'm hoping Virtanen stays with Horvat -- he's pretty much a different player playing alongside Bo. I think Ferland on the third line is a good fit. The addition of Roussel to our bottom-six adds even more offense and grit to the group. Can't wait to see where we end up by US Thanksgiving -- that'll be a big enough sample size to determine if we're legit or not.

All I can say is these are exciting times ahead of us.

  4. Spoke with a visiting Flyers fan on my way to the skytrain yesterday. He was excited about their chances for making the playoffs and thought that Kevin Hayes will be a big addition to their forward group. He also thought that Carter Hart will be the next superstar goalie, which I agreed with. In two games so far this season the kid has a 0.946 save percentage and 1.5 GAA (one shutout). Small sample size, I know, but last year as 20 year-old rookie his play in 31 NHL games was actually better than his play in the AHL.

I'm thinking it will be a 3-2 or 2-1 game for the good guys. Virtanen giving everyone their first shotgun of the season and another multi-point evening from Hughes.

  5. As others have mentioned, there should be numerous lineup changes.

First and foremost is to get Leivo off the powerplay. First unit should be Pettersson, Ferland, Miller, Boeser, and Hughes. Second unit should be Horvat, Virtanen, Gaudette, Pearson, and Myers. I like Hughes and Myers on the point over Edler as they are more active in their movement -- they move to open up passing lanes and move to open spots so they can get a clean shot on goal.

Second is to split up Pettersson with Boeser. The two of them together are playing very passive. Put Pettersson with Ferland and Miller and you'll have two big, speedy bodies that can give Pettersson the puck and create space for him. Horvat and Boeser have proven chemistry from the past two seasons. Pearson is a responsible two-way player who works hard on the forecheck and has a goal-scoring touch.

Third is to fix our bottom six. Antoine Roussel is sorely missed. IMO he is criminally underrated offensively -- his 22 even strength assists last season were tied for second on the team (alongside Horvat and trailing only Pettersson), despite him missing 17 games due to injury. A third line of Roussel, Gaudette, and Virtanen would be a buzzing energy line that can generate secondary offense. That leaves a purely defensive fourth line of Motte, Beagle, and Sutter. I like Motte's energy and think he should be in over Leivo, despite Leivo having a bit higher offensive talent. Motte is also better on the PK. Motte, Beagle, and Sutter can be our defensive/PK specialists.

Lastly, if we're down by a few goals the coaching staff should load up the top line earlier and shorten the bench a bit. No need to see Beagle in an offensive zone faceoff after an icing when we're already trailing. Either load up the top line or send out guys who have that offensive potential to generate offense.

IMO we have the personnel, just need to be smarter with deployment according to the situation at hand. We could get "tougher" but that's a whole other issue altogether.

  6. Horrible. Breakouts were sloppy all game -- passes off the mark. 3 goals against on 3 turnovers.

Both Virtanen and Hughes with posts. Could've been a different game but Canuck luck.

At least the Canucks have a little pushback as evidenced by Myers and Gaudette.

Virtanen was physical in front of the net and looked really good tonight -- not sure why coach Green keeps him stapled to the bench.

A third line of Roussel, Gaudette, and Virtanen would be an energy line that can creat offense and play physical.

There should be some personnel changes in the Top-6 as well. I like Ferland with Pettersson, and I think Boeser works better with Horvat. Maybe swap Miller and Boeser? Gives Petey two big bodies who can get him the puck, and Miller can create offense as well.

One thing for sure -- Leivo should not be on the poweplay, period.

Definitely suspension worthy. Protecting yourself is one thing, remember when Marchand used the defending himself excuse when he submarined Salo? Dirty play. Hope he learns from this. Still like the kid. But we have to hold our players to the same standards we hold other players. If someone did that to Hoglander y’all defending this would be furious.

I was just thinking of the same play. Players have the right to defend themselves, but like the Marchand incident with Salo this was over the line and definitely into dirty territory. I'm sure the intent with Hoglander wasn't dirty, but the play itself ended up being dirty.

  8. So... when healthy it's looking like:

    Ferland - Pettersson - Boeser

    Pearson - Horvat - Miller

    Roussel - Sutter - Gaudette

    Virtanen - Beagle - Leivo

    Eriksson, Motte

Schaller waived to make room for Roussel.

Management must think Pearson is a bona-fide #2LW (which he was previously) and that Gaudette can provide secondary offense (which by all accounts from his pre-season play he can).

FWIW, I still think a LW depth of Ferland, Baertschi, Pearson, and Roussel would be very solid. Still not happy with management's decision to waive Baertschi, but I can understand their assessment of the roster.

  9. So much promise from Jake, especially in his first pro-season. I was at the game where he scored his first ever NHL goal against the Flyers. He came down the wing with so much speed, made a nice move to cut to the middle of the ice, and sent a backhand on goal that made it's way to the back of the net. That year Jake was destroying guys with his hits too. He didn't get a lot of points, but you could see why the Canucks drafted him -- the speed, the physicality, the nose for the net, and the shot.

Fast forward 5 years later, and he is a shell of his former self. The speed and shot are still there but what made him successful was his physicality and the nose for the net. Too often Jake just shoots from the outside. Too often he does fly-bys on guys that he could make a solid, legal check on. Too often he disappoints.

Last year he showed promise with the increase in his offensive production and playing decent minutes. I was hoping he would build on it but it looks like he hasn't shown improvement over the offseason and during pre-season.

Bottom-Six wingers are a dime-a-dozen. As others have said, Jake will always be the player with potential -- where the best has yet to come. Maybe... maybe on another team...

The problem with Edler which I saw in the preseason, instead of trying to use Pettersson or Brock more he decided to just throw it on the net, now don't get me wrong it's not a bad thing to do that, but when you do it 3 or 4 times in a row and still don't pass it to your better shooters then that's a problem. It does seem Edler is second guessing himself to make the pass to either one, or he's just to slow to react anymore, so having a young guy in Hughes who already has shown his passing abilities it really makes sense to have the more agile quicker younger player there imo.

I know what you're saying, but Edler shooting instead of passing is similar to the idea of football teams continuing to run the football despite getting very little yardage -- by respecting the run it opens up the passing game. Same thing for hockey, if Tanev was on the first unit powerplay you know he's gonna pass it off to Boeser/Pettersson all the time, so the opposing PK unit would have those passing lanes covered. Edler, on the other hand, has a respectable shot. With Ferland or Miller in front of the net causing havoc and pouncing on rebounds, having a defenseman that has a respectable shot and who can get it through the first layer of defenders will add another threat to the offense, should BB6 and EP40 be covered.

The same reason is why I'm excited for Juolevi once he makes the big club and is manning the point on the powerplay. Juolevi has that "seeing eye" wrister from the point, the mobility to walk the blue line and open up passing lanes, and a deceptive no look tape-to-tape pass.

Exactly my thinking. Although miller is a playmaker I just don’t like the makeup of that line. If both Goldy and Baer are out of the lineup we still have a serious lack of skill...

I agree. At least one of Goldy/Baer need to be in the Top 6 and by all accounts it should be Baertschi. The lack of skill is also why I think Goldobin is indispensable at the moment.

My forward lineup as it stands is:

    Ferland - Pettersson - Boeser

    Baertschi - Horvat - Miller

    Pearson - Sutter - Gaudette

Eriksson (Roussel) - Beagle - Leivo

    Scratches: Goldobin, Motte

    (LTIR: Roussel)

Roussel takes Eriksson's spot once he's recovered and back in the lineup. Waive Motte if needed.

A package of Tanev and Virtanen are traded for an upgrade on a Top-4 RHD.

  12. No one other than Benn and Ferland are going to step up and fight, so the Canucks should respond with a pack mentality and have our guys who can play a physical game ramp up their aggressiveness and finish their checks (for forwards, I'm looking at you, Horvat, Virtanen, Miller, Sutter, Pearson, Beagle, and Leivo). If Bo is indeed to be our next captain then he should lead by example and set the tone for aggressiveness and physicality when pushback is required.

Just to be clear, a fight may not be needed, but the absence of pushback when one of our players is injured due to a dirty hit is absolutely disappointing.

a lineup right now would be,

    Ferland-Petey-Brock

    Pearson/Baer-Bo-Miller

    Baer/Pearson-Sutter-Virtanen

    Leivo-Beagle-Loui

Hard to see gaud, goldy, motte, roussel unless ur looking for specific roles to fill. Injuries will most likely occur and thats where gaud will fit in. But the competition is tight compared to last season.

I agree with your exact lineup. Motte and Goldobin are extras to start the year -- Motte fills in for a bottom-6 winger injury and Goldobin for a top-6 winger injury. Gaudette unfortunately will be the sent down for asset management, but will the first callup for an injured centreman.

Roussel coming off LTIR will force management's hand at making a tough move, should the forward lineup be completely healthy.

  14. I hope they give him proper "load management" so he can recover, get up to speed, and develop. The kid can't afford to lose another developmental year after losing the last one. This year will be huge for him.

+/-, 13 pts in 18 gms, yada yada yada. What I would like to know is why so many posters in this thread have such a hard time admitting that OJ still needs to work on the defensive side of his game, and why emotions are so touchy when someone mentions this?

No one in this thread (from what I've seen over the past couple of years) is denying all of his positives - breakouts, passing, PP, etc. - but it just seems like his downfalls are taboo. Sure, maybe someone can say that some posters only speak about his downfalls, but maybe that's just because it's so off limits in here that they are trying to make the point that I am right now, which is that we should be able to talk about OJ and all of his game without posters jumping on the backs of others and crying that they are slamming our prospect. They simply are not. OJ's foot speed has been a problem for quite some time now. Granted, injuries have set him back a ton, and leniency should be given in this regard, but it doesn't change the fact that this is a large mountain that OJ needs to overcome sooner rather than later, as the team won't be able to wait forever, and other guys will take his spot if he's not ready, essentially making it even harder to crack the lineup.

I personally do not see OJ making the team this year (he may see some games, but I think it's more likely that he stays in Utica for the year). I just feel like his injuries, although fixable, are pretty significant, and we are not in a rush to bring him in. Let him incubate a little longer in the AHL and get his legs back and better/stronger/quicker than ever, while improving his foot speed and positional play in his own zone. As is, and I really don't think by Christmas either, I don't think he will be ready to make the jump to the NHL, as he will get blown by wide almost every time by the world's best. His point total last year in the short period does not say enough of his readiness. He is a defenceman first, which is currently where he needs the most work.

That's about as fair of a critique and assessment on Juolevi as I've ever seen. Cheers!
