Reading calgary boards they seem to be ok with the idea of trading Brodie. They need frolik gone as a cap dump and have mentioned wanting a cheaper replacement in any brodie deal.

Wonder if they would take Baer back retained 25% for brodie. They get a cheaper frolik replacement and free up 2m in cap space. They can dump frolik and be fine cap wise.

Edit: they seem to think they would get a better player than Baer for Brodie. I don't know if that is true considering they want a better player but also need it to be at a low cap. Trades now are gonna be hard to make considering so many teams are tight against the cap.

Brodie doesn't really fit here - unless you propose to play him with Edler - and Myers with Hughes.

Brodie as a partner for Hughes = not a good idea imo.

Brodie plays with Giordano - is enabled by Giordano - the idea of pairing him with a rookie pmd like Hughes is not one I'd be making deals to make happen.

Edler - Brodie would be a great pairing -- much better than Edler - Tanev as Tanev can't seem to stay healthy. Assuming we trade Tanev for futures and if Tryamkin doesn't come over next season as rumoured, Brodie would be a good fit as a Top-4 RD option until Woo develops into that role.

    Edler - Brodie

    Hughes - Myers

    Benn - Stecher

Then next season assuming no Tryamkin...

    Edler - Brodie (re-signed)

    Hughes - Myers

    Juolevi - Stecher

    The year after that...

    Hughes - Myers

    Juolevi - Brodie

    ______ - Woo

    Stecher

    Agree with this.

Although the team has taken a step forward on the roster, they need to continue to accumulate picks/prospects. Ideally, we won't need to trade them for roster help going forward.

I think with the lack of D depth in the system, they should continue to stock via the NCAA/euro route. Rafferty and Teves were a nice start, but I would have liked for them to also go for a more offensive puck-moving D, such as Oliwer Kaski (signed by Detroit), or Tony Sund (signed by San Jose). And with no D from this past draft, they should be the priority in 2020.

Not even close.  Outside of Hughes, we have barely any good defenders in the system.  Juolevi/Woo could be something but who knows.  No decent forward prospects outside of Podkolzin (two years anyway) and Hoglander.  Goaltending is above average so maybe we can move somebody out to fix defence or forwards.

It's a step in the direction by making playoffs but this team still has many holes and issues all around.

You guys bring up a very good point. Our forwards are pretty good, in my opinion, with recent Hobey Baker winner Adam Gaudette, the 2019 10th overall pick Vasili Podkolzin, Nils Hoglander, who some thought he would be going in the latter half of the first round, and Tyler Madden, who outscored 2018 first round picks Oliver Wahlstrom and Jay O'Brien in their rookie NCAA seasons. Gaudette, Podkolzin, Hoglander, and Madden all have the potential to be Top-6 forwards, with Podkolzin potentially having superstar status if he really does reach his ceiling.

I would argue that our goaltending pipeline is our real strength. We have Demko in the backup spot right now and both DiPietro and Kielly turning pro. Either Demko or DiPietro could be elite goaltenders. People sleep on Kielly, who had exceptional numbers in the NCAA. In his sophomore year Kielly averaged 1.82 GAA with a 0.929 SVS%, and in his junior year he averaged a 1.91 GAA with a 0.929 SVS%, both over 39 game seasons.

Our real weakness is on the blueline. Juolevi and Woo could be Top-4 defensemen but who knows. Tryamkin looked good in his time with us and could be a Top-4 defenseman but it is not guaranteed that he would even sign another NHL contract. More work definitely needs to be done filling that cupboard, and although most people think draft it can also be done via trade or free agency as well. Looking at NCAA and European free agents is an interesting option and one that Benning has exercised already. Hopefully with the "Pettersson Factor" we'll be able to attract more highly sought-after NCAA and European free agent defensemen.

Bonuses are laid out in a way that makes it tough to move him or buy him out.

I was hoping it would be front-loaded so that we could look at moving him in the final year if needed. That said, a 5 year deal for a 29 year old defenseman who is a good skater and can keep up with today's play should be ok to effectively play out the full term. I'm sure glad this wasn't a 6 or 7 year deal though. *Phew*

  4. Great signing. I think Myers has more to show. It will be great seeing him play alongside Hughes -- they will be very complementary of each other, much like Edler playing alongside Stecher, where both players bring out the best of the other.

I can see a top four group of Edler - Stecher and Hughes - Myers, where both pairings have that puck-moving ability and can push the pace and generate and support the offense. Benn and Tanev can take up the defensive zone starts and PK time.

  5. $2M x 2 years is a great signing. That said, Hutton did show that he can play over 20 minutes/night for short stretches when Edler was injured. Not sure how those minutes will be covered when Edler is out for 10-15 games. I assume those would be split 20/20/20 with Hughes/Benn/Juolevi, or maybe those minutes are eaten up by Myers/Tanev/Stecher.

Great signing nonetheless; Hutton is too costly. Great guy tho.

  6. With the acquisition of Miller and the drafting of Podkolzin, and with Pettersson and Horvat also being consistent high-effort, puck-hounding 200-ft players, I am genuinely curious how this will affect Virtanen's game. Everyone is expecting Miller to play alongside Pettersson and Boeser, which would mean we in a few short years we would have a second line of Podkolzin, Horvat, and Virtanen.

Will Virtanen finally get it by then, and if he does, what could his game look like playing alongside Podkolzin and Horvat?

When we become a contender, we'll need to acquire a 1st to have a rookie on ELC if we want to actually win a cup. We're giving away an opportunity to have a great talent on cheap during a good drive. That's the worst part.

Podkolzin? Madden? Woo? Hoglander? They're all ~2 years away and they'll be on ELCs for 2-3 years from then...

  8. Great pick. Absolute steal getting Podkolzin at 10. He was consistently ranked as a top-5 talent throughout the year until the two more years in Russia comments and lack of point production at the U18s. Even at that tournament, however, you could see how special of a player he is in the way he played.

Cam Robinson's take on DobberProspects.com provides a very accurate description on the way Podkolzin plays the game:

    Quote

What my eyes are telling me about Podkolzin is that he’s a power winger who works and competes extremely hard. He never quits on a play even when others do. If you don’t want to give your 100% playing against him, he’s going to win. He’s a well-rounded player who doesn’t cheat for offense but has lots of offensive abilities. He has good leadership qualities, and he leads by example on the ice. He’s capable of energizing the entire team with his play.

When it comes to Podkolzin's skillset, Robinson says this:

    Quote

Podkolzin is a shoot-first type player. Both his wrist shot and slap shot are great, and he has a great quick release as well. His shots may not be the most powerful but they’re very accurate. He’s also a very good playmaker with great passing skills. And he has some of the best hands in the draft. He can stick-handle in small spaces and embarrass opposing defenders in one-on-one situations.

Podkolzin is also a very good defensive player and very good on the penalty kill. Because of his high compete level, he’s a great backchecker who frequently steals pucks. At six-foot-one, 190 pounds, Podkolzin is not the biggest guy on the ice. But he’s feisty, totally fearless, and likes to engage physically. He’s a strong player who is only going to get stronger over the next few years. Sometimes he steps over the line or lets his emotions get the better of him but I believe that’s something he can learn to manage.

Of note, Robinson had Podkolzin as the 8th best player in his final rankings.

Steve Kournianos of TheDraftAnalyst.com is more bullish on Podkolzin and had him ranked as the 5th best player in his final rankings. Kournianos has a glowing review of Podkolzin that highlights his 200-ft game, high-end talent, willingness to play an abrasive style, understanding of the game, and his compete level:

    Quote

A rugged three-zone winger with an incredible compete level that compliments his superior puck skills... what separates him from all the other “toolsy” forwards is that he can either create or finish plays while traveling at maximum speed, and his strong balance and stickhandling seems to convince defenders to back off more than they should. Podkolzin is effective both in open ice and during trench warfare, and he’s capable of completing on-the-tape passes that lead directly to quality chances near the net.

He is confident with the puck and shows a tremendous amount of poise while controlling it. He’s quite coordinated and has soft hands to handle tough passes, plus Podkolzin hits the net with the majority of his one-time attempts. Without the puck, he’s a crash-and-bang forechecker with powerful leg drive that he uses to jolt bigger defenders off the puck. Podkolzin takes direct routes to the puck, and he anticipates eventual avenues of approach to be used by opposing puck carriers. His foot speed, edge work and agility are excellent, and he should be considered a breakaway threat in open ice. Podkolzin possesses a clear understanding of the game, and his nonstop motor and desire to be the best makes him an asset regardless of whether he’s scoring or not. Keep an eye on his temper and attempts to make big hits.

If you look past his nationality, Podkolzin is a Benning and Co. player through and through. One thing I've noticed this past week is that when other coaches talk about the Canucks, specifically Peter DeBoer and Bruce Cassidy, they talk about the way they play the game. Podkolzin fits that philosophy to a T, and he's exactly what the Canucks needed.

Two skill guys together? Ha oilers tried that and so have the leafs. Who clears the crease?

You need balance.....Keith and Seabrook and Niedermayer and Pronger....

Seider should be the only D on Jim's mind cause with Hughes and OJ will both need a mean guy like seabrook or pronger.

If a defenseman, either Broberg or Seider (unless of course we happen to get Byram). I don't think either are "mean" as you put it, but they both have the size, strength, and skating ability to box people out, have strong board play, and clear the crease.

  10. Hutton for Johnson straight up, or add a later round pick from VAN if anything. Better than overpaying in both money and term for Myers in free agency, when we have Woo coming up in a few years and Tryamkin stashed in the KHL.

Johnson would be great alongside Hughes. Johnson would provide good mentorship, is a big body, and looks like he will be able to play in that #3D role for the remainder of his contract.

Hutton would do well playing on the second pair with Makar. Hutton is young enough to grow with their core and has the skillset and experience to stay in that #4D role for them.

We would be short a bottom pairing LHD which may need to be looked at in free agency or another trade, unless management expects Juolevi to come into camp and take that spot. At that point though, you'd have to pray to the Hockey Gods that Edler doesn't go down with injury, otherwise you'll have two rookies in Hughes and Juolevi as your top two LHD...

Would be happy with all of them. Liking newhook more and more. Boston college will be a great place for his development, playing alongside Zegras too.

    Agreed on Newhook.

However Zegras is going to BU. Newhook and Boldy will be at Boston College.

I was thinking about that -- one of the reasons I would prefer Zebras/Boldy/Caufield over Krebs, in that order. Player development at this stage in their young careers is huge, and IMO the NCAA has been great these past few years in helping players develop and transition into the professional leagues.

For one, the game schedule allows for a lot of time in the gym to focus on strength and conditioning. Another is that players enter the league as rookies and have to learn to play against bigger and stronger competition. Lastly, NCAA players have the opportunity to sign and join their professional-affiliate at the end of each season.

CHL players, on the other hand, have a full schedule with a lot of travel meaning less time in the gym. In their D+1 season, most draftees will be in their third or fourth year in the league and will definitely be the "top dog" playing against less physically developed and more inferior competition. Lastly, CHL players have to wait until they finish their fourth year to be eligible for the AHL, although they can join the NHL immediately.

IMO Jake Virtanen would have been better served going the NCAA route. He was too physically dominant in the WHL and when he was in the NHL he clearly needed more development but was unable to go to the AHL.

Krebs for sure is a top talent but he would have to play 2 more years in the WHL before he would be AHL-eligible. That D+1 year in the WHL would serve him well, but how well would that final D+2 year be? Would he even be ready for the NHL at that time? Or would he be in that limbo, much like where Jake was.

from the rumour yap I think thats exactly what Benning is trying to do. I do wonder if Virtanen is still on PHI's radar... we'll see.

I just can't see them going off the board and going for a Seider or someone like that, not this year.

Philippe Myers for me please. Send them Virtanen and Sutter -- he can be the third line centre to play behind Couturier and Patrick -- and we can take back MacDonald as a (one year) cap dump, in addition to the main prize that is Myers.

Unless they completely change their system, which is a possibility,  Tanev is not the kind of D Nashville would be looking for.  Laviolette says if you think defence than you spend more time defending than attacking.  He wants Ds who know how to generate offence - that's not Tanev.  Also the reason to move a D is to give more responsibility to Fabbro.

Their window is also wide open now.  They want to fix their 2nd line and a prospect who needs development time doesn't fill that need.

Maybe an indirect trade if they want to fix their 2nd line. They can trade the additional prospect and picks for extra offensive help at the deadline.

NSH: Kapanen + [VAN Top Prospect] + [2020 VAN 1st round pick] + [2019 VAN 3rd or 4th round pick]

    TOR: Tanev

    VAN: Subban
