It's not just that, we overplay the first unit, give them the first 1:30-1:40, then as soon as they lose the puck the second go around, Myers jumps over the boards with only enough time to gain the zone, pass once or twice  and get at most one shot away, which almost always ends up giving them back possession, right when the penalty expires.   At least they shoot the puck though and aren't looking for the perfect play.   We haven't had a second unit since we traded Co-ho, and by then every team had the book on our first unit (went from 24. something, down well below 20 right away, and during the 2010-2011 season, the second unit was shoring up the first unit).   The peak Sedin era was good at keeping the puck and hemming in, but didn't score as many goals as people might think they did or remember.

Edit:  Know players all want the PP time and rightly so.   Best way to increase your stats and score some goals, make some plays.   It's an important part of the game.   And can be used as a weapon, clock killer if you're ahead, or give you a shot at getting back in a game.   Feel we have the horses to got to a more traditional system.    Play 2 D's, 3 forwards and make two lines.

We need the first unit to play with some urgency, but they seem comfortable trying to slowly break the PK down and spend 90 seconds attacking.  As you said, the second unit only gets a chance when the puck is cleared with no time to set up any play.  Maybe get the league to extend minor penalties another 30 seconds and we'd be okay.

Horfat Walket sucks pucks. Islanders’ fans already hate the guy. He cheated the game to put up points in his contract year. He can’t cheat on the islanders and it sure showed in his stats. New Beau is the better player.

Nobody cares what you think about Horvat.  We are trying to discuss powerplay tactics and don't need you obsessively hating on him every opportunity.

Credit to Bo but come on he plays with Petey and Hughes on the powerplay. I think any player with a quick accurate release could find success there.

Similar to Nugent Hopkins in Edmonton, good player but look who he plays with. Difference is he’ll be making 3.5 mill less than Bo.

Yes.   Horvat became a tip master for one season.   We couldn't win with him, not sure Hronek is the long term gain, but we were losing him anyways, and it for sure will be nice to have an NHL caliber top four RHD.   EP can make up those goals on his own,  needs to be a little more selfless.    Horvat was feasting on the PP.

Successfully playing the bumper in a 1-3-1 obviously demands a lot from all the players, but it's hard to find anyone who did it better than Horvat.  TJ Oshie had some success in Washington, and Pavelski gradually drifts up into the high slot for long distance tip-ins.  The key is to make quick decisions and plays without ever handling the puck.  Horvat wasn't a great passer (unlike RNH) but he was excellent at shooting the puck without time or space.  Watch his goals last year.  They would come out of nowhere.

So if we stick with a 1-3-1, who goes where?  Hughes up top, Petey on the strong side... and then what?  Miller usually goes weak side, and then.... Kuzmenko at the net... and... we have no bumper.  Maybe put Miller there and put Brock/Hronek on the weakside as a shooting option?

Horfat Wallet is a useless puck sucker. He plays for another team now. It’s time to bring the hate. After the trade New Beau was the better pkayer and that’s inarguable fact. Horfat Wallet will suck the life out of the Islanders’ room. That’s what elephants do.

We are talking about each player's ability on the powerplay and nothing else.  There is a wide chasm between what they bring to the table.

Maybe if you actually just tried watching hockey instead of spewing nonsense all the time, you'd be able to recognize who is good and who isn't.

LMAAOAV we will not miss Bo Horfat Wallet. He was the cheating elephant in our room. New Beau proved to be a better player. Plus we got Hronek (and elite right shot D) and Raty (a great centre prospect) We should be thanking the hockey Gods that Horfat Wallet is gone.

Horvat is the best bumper in the NHL and Beauvillier is a cap dump.  We would have to pay money to trade him away.

Just because Horvat is overpaid doesn't mean he wasn't a fantastic scoring option.

A major shoulder injury has kept him from being the physical presence he was. He’s still quick and pest-like to play against, but easily gets injured now and doesn’t take the body hard.

It's that same shoulder he injured with us, no?  I remember him not being very durable in Vancouver, either.

At this point he's a very minor downgrade from Archibald.  The team will be better with him on it.

Every team plays one home game and one away game against the other conference.   At least that's how it's been for quite awhile.   Where it gets odd playing against your own division.   Last year we had ANA 4 times, Vegas, EDM and ARI 3 times for example.   Guess it has to do how evenly spread out it is, back to backs etc.    Also bad teams tend to get an easier go anyways, good-great teams use their back-ups more often.   It's also somewhat subjective.   Every year some teams expected to do well flounder, and others expected not too, do better than anticipated.   For sure not an exact science.

Edit: Just checked.  Yes the only variable is in your own division.  Either 3 or 4 times for a total of 26 times.   Then 3 times per the other division in your own conference for a total of 24 games.   Then two games against the other conference, one away one at home.  That's a small variable.    That said maybe we get ARI and ANA four times each which would matter.

Canucks appear to be a team with the most travel, but usually aren't.   COL for example led the league one year not too long ago, go figure, and SJ has as well.

And you're correct Boblaw, we were 10-20-2 last season.  Ugly.

My favourite thing last year was waking up early for weekend morning games, watching our starter get pulled in the first period, and me going back to bed.

at or around league minimum he can easily be a 6/7 guy with someone like Brisebois rotating in and out of the lineup pending strengths and rest days/back to backs

The problem with Edler is that LA was happy to let him go and there isn't a team that wants to pick him up.

I believe his wife is from here, so that rules out Sweden.  If not Vancouver, maybe he should just retire.

PTO at the very least.  See if he still has enough in the tank to be an improvement over a (so far) fringe defender in Wolanin or an upstart prospect in Hirose.  If he can stabilize Myers as a parting gift to us, then even better.

An improvement?  In Edler you'll get a sound defender who can hit, block, and move the puck.  You'll also get someone who is slower than your grandma in a wheelchair and will get into penalty trouble because of it.

  10. He has actually upheld decent underlying numbers even this year.  But you know how we all complained about how he looked absolutely cooked three years ago?  I know that Kings fans had it even worse and were happy to see him go.

I just can't see many teams wanting to sign a left-handed D-man as slow as Edler.  We certainly don't need him.  Imagine waiving Rathbone because we wanted to use Edler instead.

@Gatorwhat's the deal with Wright? Should I just use a wait and see approach? If I'm not on the hook for his cap and can slide him (I don't think he'll be playing significant NHL minutes this year) we will have money to play with in FA.

If I'm you I would definitely wait and see.  It's very unclear whether or not he will be sent down to the CHL or the AHL.  Elliotte Friedman thinks the CHL will permit Wright to play in the AHL, which is frankly the league he belongs in (where he can play top minutes and not worry about tanking the team).

In fantasy terms, you can just bury Wright in the minors and just wait to see what the ruling is.

  12. 7 minutes ago, Elias Pettersson said:

We didn't do it with Hughes either.  He played out his ELC just like Petey.  He signed a 6-year deal.  McAvoy signed an 8-year deal after 2 contracts.  Makar signed his 8-year deal after his ELC expired as well.  So did Heiskanen.  Fox signed a year early because he literally won the Norris trophy in his second season, so the Rangers had a pretty good reason to lock him up early.

These are the 5 greatest defencemen in the NHL today.  Who exactly is Jake Sanderson that he needs to be signed to an 8x8 contract after 77 games in the NHL?  Ottawa panicked and gave him his deal because they were scared he would walk like other players playing in Canada.  They gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.  Pretty simple to understand really.  Has nothing to do with his WAR card...

Oh, it's a gamble for sure, since Sanderson is not yet playing at a $8M level, but he's already close.  Based on his playstyle and his emergence as a #1 D-man in his rookie season, I think this is a safe bet that'll pay off pretty quickly.

I think Ottawa has done a good job locking enough of its key players down.  DeBrincat was never going to sign there, even if they overpaid him.  Compare the Senators to imploding teams like Calgary or Winnipeg.  Conversely, Peter Chiarelli's only good move in Edmonton was signing Leon Draisaitl to that insane contract (at the time).  All it takes are a couple of good gambles and you have a playoff team.

Yeah, these guys aren't making the team this year...  *clears throat*

The Pittsburgh Penguins designate the contracts of Dalibor Dvorský and Andrew Cristall for ELC slides.  We wish both the best in Oskarshamn and Kelowna!

So what was the rush?  He still has one year left on his ELC contract.  Was Ottawa afraid he was going to ask for $10 million next summer?

I think they wanted to give a show of confidence and get the discussion out of the way.  We did it with Miller, Toronto did with Matthews.  And we did not do it with Pettersson.  Now we're all freaking out because of it.

Sanderson probably would've been signed to an ugly bridge deal.  They don't need bridge deals when they are still in a rebuild stage (although I think that stage is officially over).
