Not sure we can improve much by switching out our 4th line players considering our 4th line last year was the best line we had in many games.

Our problem isn't the 4th line, it's the 3rd line.  Lazar and Acciari are 4th line guys.  Unless we get a true 3C and more speed and skill on the 3rd line we aren't going to improve much.

I agree but until they trade Miller they won't be able to acquire that 3C piece.

On defense Canucks should look at Klingeberg, Chiarot, Zadarov, Kulak and Josh Manson. At forward; Trochek, Dylan Strome, Mason Marchment, Nino Neiderreiter, Rodrigues, Max Domi, Lazar, Brett Howden, Nico Sturm, Johanssen, stepan

Out of all those guys the only one the Canucks might have a realistic shot at is Marchment if they overpay with term or annual aav like Benning did for Ferland.

If they get real desperate for a right shot d in free agency they are looking at possibly Anton Stralman, Justin Braun, and maybe Jan Rutta if they don't get outbid.

But realistically think they can land Curtis Lazar and Noel Acciari both right hand shot 4th line center types to improve the bottom six.

Yea I'm sick of the "he has a big heart" crap.

When you get into the playoffs it's simply physics. You can only take so many hits at 175lbs.

Not holding your breath for William Lockwood I guess...

If JR is saying the Canucks need more sandpaper, is that how they'll draft as well?

So, smaller players like Savoie, Ostlund, Mesar, Nazar, Howard, Casey might not be the type of player they're looking for?

Maybe they're thinking: Gauthier, Lekkerimaki, Kasper, Geekie, McGroarty, Snuggerud, Bichsel, Pickering, Chesley, Odelius.

Good sized players with an edge and a bit of snarl

Since when is Lekkerimaki "a good sized player with an edge and a bit of snarl"?!

Not unqualified RFAs but I wonder about guys like Justin Schultz, Josh Manson, & Colin Miller - what they'd cost & if any would be a fit.

Justin Schultz and Daniel Sprong have the Pittsburgh connection with Allvin and Rutherford.

Evan Rodrigues, Zach Aston Reese as well.

    Lazar and Hienen BC connection.

Noel Acciari cheap righr hand 4th line center Dale Tallon connection and obviously the big ticket Mason Marchment.

Lots of options not much cap space without a trade. I wouldn't mind Schultz but don't think they can fit him in.

They have the cap space for 2 bottom six forwards realistically.

We need to sign Brendan Lemieux, physical, feisty young player who’s a genuine pest and plays a solid grinding game. Kind of reminds me of Jannik Hansen.

Id also look to perhaps sign Strome if it makes sense under the cap. I wouldn’t mind trading Pearson to free up some cap space.

    Pettersson-Miller-Boeser

    Kuzmenko-Horvat-Podkolzin

    Hoglander-Strome-Garland

    Lemieux-Lammikko-Lockwood

I would love that but the Canucks don't have the cap space or clout to get into a bidding war over the bigger higher profile names like Strome and Lemieux.

They only have about 6 mil in cap once Ferland hits LTIR.

They need another 3C and a bottom six forward.

Also they could use another right shot d if possible.

They need to target guys who will accept 2 million or less at forward so they have enough to sign another d man.

I like Daniel Sproung he was drafted by Oissrbirg when Allvin was there under the radar guy. Good speed decent size right hand winger on your third line type. Not a liability totally defensively.

Still only 25 youngish and the exactly the type Canucks could come cheap on a 1 year prove it deal.

In other circumstances I'd agree with you but in our case when we just need one to make it quickly.

However from what I saw, they were quality picks who definitely have a chance with the right development.

It would be weird as hell seeing this team get to keep all our picks for the next cpl of drafts and actually have a lot of competing for roster spots due to a lot of depth.

That would be something wouldn't it?

I think it would take quite awhile for the shock to wear off and not ask myself am I dreaming?

    Could this actually be true?

Am I holding my breath for that? F no!!!

     If only...

If the Canucks want guys who will be NHL ready sooner than later they have to pick guys who have some size and are more physically mature at 18.

Have to have good speed and good hockey IQ and be decent enough defensively to not be a liability. Bonus points if they already play okay against men in a top league in Europe.

It would also help a ton if the Canucks picked in the top 10 consistently as those are the guys expected to be NHL ready 2 years after getting drafted.

If the guy we took at 15 becomes the key core piece I expect, then it’s a great draft.

Nah you need 3 impact NHL players from a draft class to be actually considered truly great or even good.

Look at Boeser in 2015, he was a good pick but the rest of that class was ass.

Ironically the Canucks best draft classes seem to come a decade apart. 2004 was a good class they got Edler, Hansen and Schneider out of that one.

Then in 2014 Virtanen was a huge bust but Jared McCann has turned into a quality NHL middle six regular even though it's not on the Canucks.

Thatcher Demko is a top 10 goalie in the NHL.

Meanwhile Gustav Forsling is looking great as a quality d man in Florida.

If the pattern continues next year's 2023 draft class will be better and in 2024 should be the Canucks best draft since Benning's first back in 2014.

  9. The Canucks being the pansy team they are would never sign him.

They need guys with an edge for far too long who have size and hit and play with some edge.

More realistic target would be Zach Aston Reese for his hitting ability he is similar in that way to Brandon Tanev. Skates well enough to get in in the forecheck and hit.

The type of 4th liners you want.

Danton Heinen is the guy we should be looking at. Pens didn’t qualify him despite putting up 18 goals last season.

Could probably convince him to come play for his home team on the cheap. Not sure he’ll be in high demand.

Also Curtis Lazsr then or Noel Acciari.

I could see Lemieux being in high demand. Flyers,Habs, and Penguins, Las Vegas should all be interested Oilers probably too.

He is a deterrent an actual guy with size who can skate and hit and willing to play an agitator game.

    Elite 4th line winger.

  12. The BC Lions getting blown out is a good thing if it means they finally address their problem areas.

    1) The run game. James Butler hasn't been the same since getting lit up in the Toronto game, the run blocking could be better but the RB needs to create  and maximize yards on every touch as well. Having said all that... the BC Lions have a fresh ex NFL RB Brian Hill with many years of experience on the roster just waiting to be given a chance. It wouldn't hurt to sit Butler for a game and try a different look.

    2) Special teams have been bad all year getting gashed on punt and kickoff returns meanwhile the Lions have nobody who is a threat back there to break a big one themselves. Shai Ross the Canadian has been decent on punt return but the real opportunity comes from kickoffs for big plays with more room to work.

    3) Lucky Whitehead man! This guy was their best, fastest, most dangerou and most exciting player just a year ago yet he has been forced to take a backseat so far in the offence! The Lions coaches have not made up for his lack of touches on offence by at least giving him a chance to help flip field position and provide a momentum boost in the kickoff return game. Absolutely insane. Free Lucky!

I would love to see Washington take Miroshnichenko. They don't shy away from Russians and he would be a great fit with no one better to learn from in the NHL than Ovechkin as tries to play a similar bulldog type style. He has potential to be a 30 goal scorer or flame out.

    Let's go!!! :metal:

Expecting him to be gone, but would LOVE to see him make it to 15.

I don't see any true glaring weaknesses in his game that he can't really work on and improve minus the height.

His weight is already pretty decent and he is going to be joining a top class college hockey program at Michigan who recently have become quite used to high end talents passing through their school.

Think he is NHL ready potentially in 2 more years enough to pack on 5-10 more pounds and get stronger.

I see him as quite versatile.

His floor is a 3C and ceiling as a bonafide top 6 winger.

The Fedotov thing has really thrown even more of a wrench into the Russians.

I didn't think Miro would be there if we were able to get a mid 2nd, but now he might fall to the third round.

    We have pick #80, MTL has #62 & #66.

If Miro is available at one of those MTL picks I wonder if DiPietro would be intriguing enough to make a deal. Maybe Mikey+ one of our picks.

Kucherov went at the end of the 2nd round in '11, Kaprizov went in the 5th in '15, could be looking back at this as getting a potential star player much lower than you should.

Done a fair bit of catching up on the 1st round the past few days. Just some of my general thoughts on some of the names being discussed by everyone.

Trikozov: Love the playstyle, guy just eats up ice and non-stop attacks. Pretty big boom-bust, but its hard not to like what I see. It's like watching a shark dart around. He just wants that puck, and he will do what it takes to get it. Dog-on-a-bone mentality, but with the skill to back it up. I strangely want him to be even more selfish and start using his shot as more of a weapon. He seems to want to distribute a lot and sometimes overpasses, where a shot assist would do the same trick in a different way. And his shot is also fantastic.

Savoie: I've definitely slept on Matty so far. Mostly cause he has been often ranked out of reach, but I think of the smallish forwards, he is head and shoulders above the others. So much deceptive skill, and his skating is a pleasure to watch. Would love it if he somehow fell. For my money, he might be the most purely skilled player in this draft. If we somehow got a pick inside the top 10 or so range, I would have a hard time passing on this kid.

Ohgren: Probably the standout for me of the Djugarden three. I get real Player Name-Ek vibes from Ohgren. Not as physical, but seems like a "wear-you-down" type, and with his frame he can be effective at it. Ostlund also looks great, but he has a noticeably slight, almost Petey like build, without the height. I'm pretty lenient on the whole size thing, and have a soft spot for the guys who play bigger than they are, but idk if he can do that.

Bichsel: I wish there was a translation on the longer, more interview like, YouTube video on this guy. It looks like he is already living on his own, and his maturity overall in the video seems impressive. The way his coach talks with him as well about how much better he is getting, and mentions that he is way better than his teammates is pretty eye opening. I get Byfuglien vibes from this guy, just with his size and skating ability alone. If he doesn't develop offensively, he could cut out a niche as a Gudas type on the low end, which I have always loved Gudas. I rly like the player, however I just don't know if I can justify nabbing him at 15. Would love to have another 1st for him or trade for an early 2nd if he doesn't go day 1.

Lambert: I still think he catches too much flak from the stat watchers, but there is some definite red flags. I have followed Lambert pretty closely the last couple yrs, and it's always a rollercoaster. He will make a genius decision to open up ice with a chip off the boards or a cut through the middle with his skating, and then hang onto the puck too long and immediately make a stupid decision. He needs to make a simple play after the initial genius one. Whether that can be coached out, you'd rly hope, but who knows. However, he could be a Hagelin type on the low end if he doesn't get fully over it. Just chip and chase all game with his speed and sneaky good passing.

Slafkovsky: I said it a few months or so back that I would take this kid at #1, and he gained that ranking on Bob's final. Just too much of a rare beast this big fella. His board play is fantastic, and the way he uses his size to his advantage is so great to see. Usually these kids with size take a while to figure that out, where he already has a great foundation there. This kid fully developed could be SCARY in a few yrs. Idk that I see high end 80+ scoring, but just a nightmare to play against with his size and speed. 30/30 is a fair upside in my opinion, but in a very unique playstyle.

Those would be my favorites or interesting players. I'm a little reserved on a few others, such as Kasper, McGoarty, Chesley, as I just don't see a ton of offensive upside in them, and im not sure there is anything that will set them apart at the NHL level. I'm a big believer in having something elite to bring to the table. Whether it's your speed, hockey sense, shot, board play. It's hard to cut it as a "jack of all trades" at the NHL level. If you can have atleast one trait that you can confidently say "he is better at this than 75% of the league", that's a projectable attribute. If you have multiple of them, even better. But if you are just average or a little above average, it's hard to make it, and even harder to get a legitimate chance in a scoring role.

The Canucks could use some more speed all over the lineup. Lambert reminds me of a guy who could be a Mason Raymond type on the Canucks. I think second line winger is his ceiling.

His hockey IQ and compete/consistency is not where you want it to be though imo.
