  1. Tanev has scored eight goals in 156 NHL regular season games and none in 15 playoff games.

That is 171 NHL games and eight goals scored.

    Positionally sound.

    Limited offense.

    Not a hard hitter.

Tanev is the type of player any team could use but Edler is not going anywhere,Ditto Juice and Hammer. Garrison is a local boy that wanted to sign here, and I presume would like to stay.

That leaves Tanev as a d man that Florida would accept as they have stated they wanted a D top-4 roster player in part for return in trading their #1.

  2. 6' 3" 216 lbs right handed,puck moving d man- Ekblad

    5' 11" 179 lbs. Left winger-Hunter

    6' 1" 186 lbs. Center- Reinhart

Ekblad is a cornerstone player that steps into the lineup this September, freeing up a top-4 d man to trade in the process.

Plenty of centers waiting in the wings for the Canucks.

Hunter is not fitting the mold of what the mgmt.states to ice but it will be sad to see him go.

    Ekblad,please.

  3. Sad that Booth's contract was the remaining cap space allotted for this team to become a championship club.

Kes needed a winger and Booth was brought in.

This team needed a legitimate winger to play with Kes to make this team a contender.

Unfortunately,a multiple concussed/head injured player with a $4.5m salary and four year contract was the thin edge of the downfall that followed.

I hope Booth can continue his career with the success he achieved prior to his injuries . Best of luck to him.

  4. People of faith shouldn't be painted with the same brush, however some people of any faith keep waiting to be "guided by God" and therefore may neglect the things they should be working on.

I live six months of each year on Bali where religion is everything for near everyone-Hindus ,Moslems and Christians. It's just a part of their lives.I am sure each individual takes their faith differently-if at all.

Christianity is the basis of the legal structure of this land and this country was far more God oriented before the 60's came and went.I am not religious but he may be a better player because of his faith.I have no idea how to tell.

Are you suggesting he should be working on something he neglected? I don't get it as he can do as he likes.

  5. Hemsky said no to a 3 year $10M contract. You pay him more than $4M a year and then you have Burrows at $4M on the 2nd line.

Hemsky was in and around a PPG player-on anemic Edmonton club- and 2+ years younger than Burr.

Burr is a half point PPG player with the Sedins -and now has injuries to deal with.

Gillis made the contract with Burr and it seems like he was and is overpaid.

  6. Maybe this is to make room for Ales Hemsky.. Just saw a vid on tsn saying OTT wants to trade his rights for a draft pick; they haven't been able to agree to terms on a contract yet.

Perhaps, he would definitely add some offensive; We will have to see I just hope we dont trade our 1st, 2nd round picks.

Would be a low - cost ,decent gamble to give the Sedins a talented RW that can put the puck in the net.

  7. As long as the cap relief is used for something good, otherwise I am not sure this was necessary.

    I agree.

Booth has shown signs of progressive, cerebral recovery.

However,if his lot is a third line slot the Nucks would do better to let him move on.

Credit to the Aqualini's for funding the mistakes of the past for a shot at the betterment of the team's future.

  8. It's not like the deals he offered a number of the players (Ehrhoff particularly....) were complete low balls. They were fair as a re-signing offer on a top team trying to maintain it's talent.

But then this is a thread about Benning, not Gillis...

Gillis was $2-$2.5 million off on his offer to Ehrhoff. There was nothing fair about it.

When you get it together you can get past apologising for Gillis.

  9. Suggesting in hindsight that Gillis should have matched or bettered the insane deal Regier gave Ehrhoff is about as rational as pining on as if the Samuelsson deal doomed this team.

Canucks offered Ehrhoff 4.6 million for 6 years and he turned it down. Ehrhoff want longer term then 6 and a front loaded deal. canucks didn't want to give that to him and made the smart move to send him packing. He wouldn't have solved this teams issues anyway and we would have been stuck with a 10 year deal.

Gillis stated he would not pay Ehrhoff any more than Bieksa and publicly berated Ehrhoff when he did not accept the Bieksa contract.Bieksa signed his contract in mid-June so Gillis had weeks to negotiate a fair deal with Christian before he hit FA .

There was no "insane deal" from Regier as Ehrhoff was under contract to Vancouver when Gillis low balled him and refused to offer him fair value.

Ehrhoff anchored the highest scoring team and best PP in the league (15g 36a 50 pts) as opposed to Bieksa's 6g 16a 22 pts.

"We're still talking about different possibilities, but like I said earlier, playing on this team is more important than individual compensation," Gillis said. "That's our expectation with everybody. It works with some but it may not work with others. I can't tell you what I expect.

We'll just see how it goes. If he's unwilling to accept what we think is fair and allows us to be competitive, we'll go in a different direction."

Hours later, the Canucks went in a different direction.

Ehrhoff, who tied for seventh among NHL defencemen this season with 50 points, also seems to realize that if he wants to stay in Vancouver he'll have to accept less than what he'd get on the open market.

"I just want something that is fair and obviously if I end up staying here it's natural that you have got to come their way a little bit," Ehrhoff said. "It's just meeting at the right point, you know."

Although he has only been a Canuck for two seasons, Ehrhoff said he too has a loyalty to the team

"I'm very appreciative for what this organization has done for me in the short two years I have been here," he said. "Like I said many times before, I like the group of guys, I like where this team is going and we were very close this year and I think we can be a very good team for years to come and I'd definitely like to be part of that."

    NHL d men with 48 50 51 points in 2010-2011

49 pts: No players at 49 pts.

  10. "But it was pretty obvious at the time that Ehrhoff, and rightly so IMHO, felt that he shouldn't have his salary determined by an arbitrary structure that said no one on the Canucks' D could make more that the $4.6 million Gillis awarded to Bieksa. Gillis broke his internal cap to retain Edler two years later. At the time of the Ehrhoff negotiations, I honestly believe that a $5 million to $5.5 million cap hit (on a reasonable term) would have gotten an extension done. Gillis refused to go above an offer that was identical to Bieksa's.

That all said, the biggest mistake that Gillis made was not in letting Ehrhoff (and also Salo, Samuelsson, etc.) go. It was in failing to replace these players. " Sid is me x 3

    I agree.

Gillis did not replace the skill sets these players provided to the team's success and successful style of play.

You can' t blame GIllis for trying to sign Christian for less but insulting him and refusing to offer a fair deal helps define Gillis' weakness in his arrogance/intransigence that ultimately led to his eventual downfall.

Gillis arguing that he could replace losing Ehrhoff as the team had Salo and Tanev implies Gillis was a poor judge of talent and did not recognise his team's internal synergies, success and strength.

  11. Did Gillis not work closely with the scouts?

Does Gillis not have back ground of a talent evaluator? He should coming from being a Agent.

One GM was a full time amateur, pro and NHL professional Director of Amateur Scouting, serving multiple NHL teams for a decade in this role.

This GM also served as an assistant GM for six years,as well.

The other GM negotiated contracts as the foundation of his talent evaluation skill set.

  12. In defence of Booth and Gillis..His concussion history has never been an issue since he has been a Canuck..It's been other injuries.

Concussions are like when a computer gets dropped a few times- maybe there was a problem before with the computer but dropping it creates a whole new set of issues and compounds existing issues.

A player that can no longer cognitively function at the highest levels often begins experiencing/accumulating other injuries.
