I like Myers, but Zadarov may be a better fit here. If we can offload Myers, I'd be fine with Zadarov for 4ish.

Zadarov is essentially as awkward as Myers can be, with a bit more physicality in terms of hits... If you think Myers gets too many penalties... Zadorov gets more on a team that has much better transition numbers than the canucks.

Anyways Zadorov is a big no, especially since he's a LHD

Wow, so the Rangers wanted him, but wouldn't or couldn't re-sign him.  So he went to the Wings for the exact same cap hit they just signed Trochek for, but for less term?

    Interesting.

I had to double take on the players point values and contracts they just signed... lol

I'd rather have Copp.... especially at the 2 years less term lol

LTIR is indeed complicated. LTIR does allow you to go over the cap, but ferlands cap hit still counts. LTIR is never a positive thing, for many reasons.

    1. when you calculate the LTIR if not calculated at the right time you actually lose space. I don't want to get in to it's very complicated.

    2. when in LTIR you cannot bank cap space for when the trade deadline approaches.

    3. Bonus payments from rookie contracts and 35+ contracts can be paid off with remaining cap left over at the end of the year, BUT not when in LTIR. when in LTIR they get carried over to the next year and it can cost dearly. the canucks have a 1.25 million penalty this year.

ferlands LTIR would give you an allowable 86 million in total space but his cap hit still counts against it, you would still only have 82.5 million in space left for other contracts.

Ferlands contract is only a negative, but so is JVR's.

JVR's is overpaid by maybe 3-4 million, and his actual salary is 5 million. that amount of cap is worth about a second rounder.

how much negative value ferlands contract is up for debate. probably less than a secound rounder, but its definitely a negative.

that being said, i dont think philly makes this trade.

    Great thoughtful post.

My trade was generally based on the Weber trade. I figured there would be some sort of cap gymnastics that a team would abuse the way the lightning has in the past.

I suppose Ferland could be removed out of the trade and as you said Canucks probably have to add a bit more especially if the evaluation on the negative value of JVR is a second rounder.

Interestingly Patrick Marleau was traded in 2019 with a first round pick with 1 year 4.5m cash. Might be the outlier of values but it's worth noting that these types only really occur when a team has desperation to clear up space.

Highly doubt Philly has any interests in trading that 5th pick unless it’s for a young proven player, like a Pettersson. You look at their prospects pool and it’s as bare as ours. They didn’t have a 1st round pick last year and none of their prospects has made much of an impact, thus far. They also don’t have another pick until the third round, if they happen to trade that 5th overall pick away.

Really all depends on if they want to "go for it"

Not really arguing I think these types of trades happen in a blue moon but it's well to denote that they would be getting the 15OA in return.

Of course there's been many rumors of their interest in Gaudreau... Cap space is highly needed for that to happen.

If they are pretty confident of that happening then 15OA and Gaudreau seems appealing.

  5. Philly is in need of cap space. Van can accomodate on short term relief if it means an increase in assets...

Curious on how realistic this looks for both teams

    PHI receives:

    VAN 15 OA pick

Ferland (3.5m LTIR relief 2.75 actual money )

    Van receives:

    PHI 5 OA pick

    JVR (7m cap - 5m actual money)

Essentially the value is 10 spots for:

    2.75m cash

    7m cap space freed up

3.5m cap overage leverage in LTIR.

The whole LTIR thing is complicated but I think it allows them to go over the cap by 3.5m which I would think is a good thing for them.

Perhaps if someone has a better understanding of the intricacies of LTIR they can explain why it or why not.

  6. If PLD was a righty center I'd say that is be in the market to trade Miller and Garland to get assets to expend on that kind of trade

Perhaps it'd be more prudent to use those assets to draft a RH center down the road.

For the center depth I think I'm in on signing Malkin for two years also not a center but as a UFA doesn't cost us anything but cap space

Potentially able to trade with retention in year two as well.

  7. I wonder if the best thing is to try and resign Boeser on a 2x6m deal.

He gets more money than his QO overall and puts him into UFA at the age of 27.

Canucks get a manageable cap for a goal scoring winger but more importantly the Boeser contract becomes a known contact with no arbitration cases looming that I would imagine is more appealing to trade.

  8. Hamonic was having a really good game was a little worried when he limped off.

Hunt probably gets a chance under a new coach before they go dipping into Abby

I do wonder if we could develop Rathbone in Abby to play on his off side right side. Guy has a wicked slapper which would be primed for use

Savard instead of Poolman and i would have been ecstatic.

honestly not sure if Savard is any good anymore or not...

he played fairly limited minutes in Tampa and was a roughly even player (in playoffs)... Being on a great and deep team like Tampa this leaves me a little hesitant. That said being said with the defensive core they have there its obvious he was utilized in a limited role in favor of the bigger name players.

Just saying not sure if he's earned such high regard as he seems to be getting. Being age 31 (birthday in October) vs Poolman age 28 (birthday in June) we will have Poolman on his more valuable years and will his contract will expire before his eventual decline

Way to go Benning!  GM of the year coming his way.  Damn I’m loving this signing.

He'll have to get recognized of this team goes from the dumps of last year to a playoff team this year lol

Pretty funny that he could be the only gm of the year that has a fan base calling for his job

Game Log for Winnipeg comparing Josh Morrissey vs Poolman

There are many who feel like Poolman was their 7th but when the chips were all in for the playoffs Winnipeg chose to play him at a fair rate in comparison to their #1 utilized defenseman

Overall he seems like he's average defenseman that can hold his head above water and has decent size. Term is a bit long but 2.5m is probably just fine.

  12. Kid seems to have some swagger. Love that kind of attitude

Our roster is pretty deep right now so I'm doubtful he has a shot art making the NHL but if he is willing at refining his defensive game in the AHL where he can be taught the pro game then it's possible he gets a few shots in the big club periodically throughout the season

Holtby had an abysmal season in WSH 2019/2020. Here are Holtby's stats last season. He didn't win Canucks many games. Just saying. Look at the stats.

    Holtby's stats:

second worst save percentage while 5v5 at 0.889

second worst goals saved above average -14.59

league worst high danger save percentage with 0.747

league worst high danger goals saved above average at -11.94

Cap hit of 4.3 M and salary due in 2021/2022 5.7M

was another bad signing from Jim Benning and his team.

I mean he went 7-11-3 so he won some lol

Was he worth the contract? God no

But he may have been worth it to Demko and maybe was a bet that Canucks could rehabilitate his form to increase trade value

The team was utter trash last year so I can't really blame the entirety of his stats just on Holtby

Canucks forced to buyout Jake Virtanen because they can't find takers

Canucks forced to buyout Braden Holtby because they can't trade him at the conditions they had in mind.

VAN added Holtby and Schmidt last offseason, just one season later both will be gone because Canucks need the cap space. Neither Holtby nor Schmidt have been a fit. Terrible.

Holtby is a fit but his contact as of right now isn't... They need the cap space so any trade that a team wanted retention was never an option.. draft picks to offload not an option as well.

Schmidt case is an odd one no one really knows if it's a player style or the environment that the player was in that caused him to be a bad fit this year

  15. 7 minutes ago, DrJockitch said:

So for last years mistakes we now have 2.5M In dead cap space next year.

I wouldn't say Holtby was a mistake he filled the role we needed last year.. veteran insurance type backup.

Virtanen... Well I mean that mistake was out of the Canucks hands they chose to keep Virtanen as an argument for asset management. Otherwise you're going to arbitration with an unknown number or letting him walk for nothing

    Question:

Could we buy him out then resign at a lower rate?

I believe a player that is bought out either cannot be resigned by the team for the duration of that buyout life time or just for a year

Why not?  If Petey,  BO, Miller, Demko, Boeser et al aren't good enough to get us into the playoffs, why is it so important to hold onto them?

BTW: That being said, I expect the Canucks to make the playoffs this year.

I imagine like in every season their will be self reflection by the players and the organization will be discussing the following:

    • the player's performance (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
    • the player's future
    • the player's desire to be here
    • the player's value on the market

Organizations do this every year so nothing would change... If the canucks fall flat then hard discussions on Miller, and Bo being 1 year left to UFA will be had. Boeser being an RFA will garner tough conversation as well.

Pettersson and Hughes however will not be traded (Well Hughes maybe if NJD does some stupid crazy trade to complete the Hughes trinity)
