Gotta love Carolinas willingness to draft defence. Would have to thinking morrow would have been our pick if he was still on the board.

I stated previously that my dream draft would be Johnson, Morrow, and Brent Johnson

2 outta 3 were out of our range it appears but I'm still hoping for Brent :p pleaaaaase

Here come the Canes to crush it again..

Yeah I believe in coach brindy but not really in their management philosophy.. trading away a good cheap goalie in njedkolvich and their general reluctance to pay their stars like aho and we'll see how the handle svechnikov now

I remember watching Barzal fall in their laps several drafts back. It blew my mind then that that insanely talented kid fell back to them back then, and it blows my mind that they managed to snag Raty in the mid second round this draft. Good job Isles!

Isles traded up for that pick I remember when Boston had those 3 picks in a row and didn't draft barzal my jaw dropped and then they announced a trade for that pick and I was super disappointed it wasn't the Canucks lol

Would sure be nice if Holtby could land us a pick in the next few rounds.

And this won't be a popular take - but I'd deal Pearson for one as well - but not if I were the guy that just re-signed him...so that aint gonna happen.

Yeah that's usually a dick move for a gm to do and it sours player opinions of the organization but I hear ya works be great to get another 2nd / 3rd

Its only a matter of time before he starts asking to be sent to NJ.  Id give it 3 years.

Quinn is pretty professional and quite frankly Canucks are far better than NJD...

3 years is probably a fair time frame but yeah i don't think he's going to come out and say trade me to NJD. If anything NJD will come knocking and hopefully will blow our socks off

Lol at the post then being edited out

What's funny is that whether or not Glass was Benning / Weisbrod guy or not is that anti Benning people seem to harp on that as a negative... Fact is that it takes great managerial strength to be able to listen and trust your staff and shows personal strength to be able to sway your own opinions

In short they try to impose a negative when it's actually a positive

  7. I was rummaging around some expansion protection stuff and the Canucks clearly have 1-2 forward spots and 2 defense spots available

I will use Winnipeg as an example here where if you look at there probably protection list they will leave Logan Stanley and Mason Appleton exposed otherwise their other players are not worthwhile.

I would wonder if peg trades use those 2 players and we trade them back after the expansion draft at what valuation would that be fair or at the list worthwhile for us.

Both are useful players that are cost controlled so would you, if you were Winnipeg, trade the 17th OA ? Couple of seconds? Or would those assets be worth more than those two players.

I haven't looked at other teams as of yet but this type of deal would be ideal for teams that have 1 or 2 viable players that they'd rather keep and would have players that meet the exposure requirements that they'd be fine with losing..

  8. Top 6 flexible forward here's why:

    • Schmidt in a regular year should be an upgrade
    • Rathbone for a full year will be an upgrade from what we had last year
    • Brad Shaw attention to defensive details should help our system play specifically in the defensive zone transitions
    • Forwards are also involved and to blame for defensive lapses... I feel like the high goal against numbers are immediately blamed on the defense but really the issue is poor zone transitions that lead to turnovers... In short a good forward and forward depth also leads to better defense

Our cap space is limited this year and becomes more infinitely flexible the next years. In any year we can't fix every problem at once but considering the high costs for defensemen in trades and the potential UFAs (mainly Morgan Reilly and Seth Jones) for next year it may be more reasonable to target a top 6 forward this year and a high-end defenseman the next

As for the OP and relation to analytics, I still think that, mediocre analytics or not, SEA takes a legit NHL, top 4 D over an unproven AHL'er with a history of below average skating.

    That isn't about 'doubting' analytics.

    I concur with this.

Besides I said this before... Depending on the way Seattle wants to handle the cap it is quite plausible that the retain 50% to regain assets because hey 3m x 2-3 years for a 3-4 defender that has some unique traits and has PP ability could return a decent pick

As much as we need, and I want, to add to our D, I'm just not sure the numbers will work out for one of them to drop to us. I feel we have a realistic opportunity to address a lesser, but also very necessary need, which is speed and skill. I would love to see Lysell and Samoskevich come to us with our 1st and 2nd. These guys absolutely BUZZ around the ice, and combining them with Podkolzin, Hoglander, Horvat, Miller, Petey, Motte etc. will make us such a difficult team to keep up with. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Pearson, and even Boeser (though he showed nice improvement this year with his skating) lumber around the ice can be painful. Rolling out three lines of speed and skill will be brutal on opposing teams. Watching the Tampa Carolina series really opens your eyes to the speed of these juggernaut teams.

Neither of these players numbers pop off the page, but watching them, the skill is so evident. In Lysell's case, deployment and some puck luck would really help his case. Samoskevich was on fire to start the year, then got injured, and had his role changed after returning, where he was shifted to the wing and removed from PP1, which skews his numbers. Both of these guys also show a great willingness on the defensive side of the puck as well. No they aren't big, but in the same vein as Hoglander, they don't seem to play small.

I know this isn't the most balanced approach, but the more I think about it, the more I want to see it lol.

I think 9OA you go BPA no matter what.

Whether it's Johnson, McTavish, Lysell or whoever.

The 2nd pick you can lean more into organizational need and target a defencemen there but if there is a faller like hogslander than I'm in!

And the latter rounds is typically a mixture of high risk skill guys and low risk role players.

I like Lysell too but his ranking seems to be oddly varied. This draft will be insane to see where these kids will go.

Tampa only have 3 Ds to absolutely protect - Hedman, Sergachev and Cernak.  McDonagh turns 32 this month and has a 6.75M cap hit for another 5 seasons after this one.   They've been going some games with 7 Ds and Foote has yet to play in the post-season.  It's his first season though.

If Tampa is making a deal with Seattle to move cap - most insiders believe they will, they don't have to move anyone before expansion.

Will probably cost more than a 2nd round pick to move Eriksson.  It's a flat cap and 6M is a lot of cap space to lose.  Johnson is an ugly contract - not that they would move Cernak.  Might be better to simply keep that room to go after some of the upcoming UFA Ds this year or next.

Seattle is unlikely to be picking Myers with his numbers and that contract.  They are analytics driven and his numbers aren't great.

Yeah, Myer's analytically isn't great but in general a RHD with Myers size, strength and skating ability would be appealing for most teams in the league... Seattle could in theory pick him up with the intention of trading him at 50% retention for a decent kickback on assets.

  12. 53 minutes ago, IBatch said:

If that's the case we could do the same thing.   But don't want to.   I like Myers.  One of the few D's we have that plays with some vengeance.  Was sold with Brian Burkes assessment of him when we signed him.   And hasn't disappointed.   People forget quickly how good things were when Guddy and Del Zotto were patrolling the blue line.  All Myers does is take one tough assignments 5 x 5,  PK and does his best with 20-30 seconds of second unit time...

well retaining 3m is dead space on the cap.. See how luongo cap is biting us in the butt, it would be the same thing there.. For Seattle they are dealing with a blank book and this is less obstructive for them.

I like Myers too but in the third year that 6m is probably better suited to be used on contracts like Miller, Horvat, and Hogslander.
