? Bo's not soft, or Pearson or now Miller.

Bo isn't soft, I should have been clearer i suppose.

Bo and Miller, tenacious, not soft.

Petey is elusive but still slight in stature.

Boeser has a heavy shot but doesn't play a heavy game.

Those our are 4 surefire top 6 forwards moving forward.

Pearson/Leivo  if one of them can stick in the top 6 for the whole year and play aggressively that would go a long ways towards our top 6 grit.

Baertschi is soft though, does Nyquist play the same style as Baertschi and how Raymond used to? On the perimeter?

There are some question marks as to who rounds out the top 6, but if 4 of the 6 are softer players... That's an ideal mix.

It's not about the money or else players would play for $100,000.

It is about money too for sure, they arent going to play for nothing. I just think the difference between 6.5 mil a year and 8 mil a year becomes pretty minor once your already a millionaire.

What you can only buy 3 houses instead of 4?

I understand there is pressure from the NHLPA as well for guys not to take 1 mil deals instead of close to market value as to not ruin it for everyone else, they definitely feel pressure from what I have read.

Teams that have a longer window and win get buy in from their stars.  I am hopeful Boeser see's that and buys in.  In my mind his contract is extremely important to set the bar for this group and determine how long this group can stay together.  Long term I give him a bit more - 8 years.  Shorter term I play hard ball.

I agree completely here, this Boeser contract is extremely important, they did real well with Bo, this is the next piece.

Taking a pay cup only benefits owners.

    Financially sure.

But if your goal is to win and be on a tight knit team that has a chance to compete for a long time, then hopefully your willing to only make 45 mil over 7 years VS 55 mil over 7 years.

Only 45 Million... I mean your still going to be super rich.

I like to think I would leave some money on the table in order to play competitive hockey with a solid group of guys, compared to asking for the world and never really getting a good chance to win it all.

Brock seems like a real character guy but we will see what really motivates him sometime this summer.

After these 2 signings and the Karlsson signing in Vegas I wonder if it will help with Boeser's deal for the Canucks?

    Karlsson

I hope so. I think Karlsson is a decent comparison as far as production goes too.

We are going to see Boesers real character and how much he wants to be here with this contract.

We really need the young guys to buy in and sign a little below market value like Karlsson did so that they can stay together and compete.

Especially Petey because he will really set the bar for salaries, no one should be making more than him on our current roster.

I mean, what if this turns out to be a 1 OA. Like, let’s not pretend this is impossible. So next year we miss playoffs and don’t give them our pick. The year after we miss playoffs again being last in the league. If that happens, pick some how materializes into 1OA

    , then what?

Then we cry ourselves to sleep.

That would be a very Canuck thing to happen too.

Not gonna worry about it until the time comes.

I love how everyone here jumps to the worst conclusion. There is no guarantee he's getting 7x7 or 7 years total or that much money. Whining about a signing before it even happens is ridiculous

Ah the internet where people assume the worst, everyone sucks and everything is an awful deal lol.

I dont think we will give him a 7x7, IF that does happen I would be disappointed but I would also reserve final judgement to how well he fits with us.

I remember how mad people were when we acquired Ehrhoff.

"Error-Hoff" HE'S GARBAGE! TURNOVER MACHINE! WHAT A TERRIBLE ADDITION.

He fit our team like a glove.

You never know how a player will fit.

He could find his perfect defense partner and form one of the league's best pairings like Hamhuis and Bieksa.

Or he could never find his stride and not mesh with anyone well like Ballard or Gudbranson.

Some people need to pump the brakes and wait and see how it unfolds.

Interesting that the Preds wanted Gaudette:

Leafs were one of three in on Subban

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: Believe that the Maple Leafs, Devils and Canucks were in on P.K. Subban at the end. The Predators wanted Adam Gaudette on a Canucks deal. Got the sense that the Maple Leafs went hard after Subban and believes that they were the team the Predators GM David Poile was waiting on.

The more I think about it I wish we would have made the deal.

I could handle seeing Gaudette go even though I like him.  He's not in the top tier of the core.

If you could choose Myers for 6-7mil or Subban for 9 for 3 years.

We could have had a former Norris winner for cheapish.

Buffalo's ownership ponied up.  It's hard to believe Aquilini would have been unwilling to pony up the necessary dough to ensure the health of the franchise given the way he has invested towards staying competitive.  It's far more likely the idiot he had as a GM lacked the intelligence to realize that a buyout was the only sensible solution.  Instead, he doubled down on the bad contract with the trade.    You don't need hindsight to realize how brutal of a decision this was; it was painfully obvious to everyone but GM Neckbeard.    There is a reason no NHL team is willing to hire Gillis after the debacle he caused here.

Buffalo did pony up I agree.

They also didnt want Ehrhoff anymore, they didnt hand him 30 Million or whatever it was and then turn around and give him another 30 mil, they wanted him gone.

    We didn't want Luongo gone.

I wish it didn't all go down like it did and he never left, but then we probably wouldn't have our new core that we do.

We have different opinions that's fine

I'm happy to have watched Luongo all those years and he deserves a good retirement. Hopefully we can agree on that.

  9. 16 minutes ago, qwijibo said:

Strictly speaking it was always an attempt to purposely circumvent the salary cap.  Neither Gillis nor Luongo ever had any intention of fulfilling the entire contract.  I don’t agree with the punishment after the fact, but contract never should have been allowed in the first place.

I agree it was designed to circumvent the cap, and teams around the league were doing it.

Canucks saw an opportunity to give themself an advantage within the current rules and did it.

Should it have been allowed by the league then? No maybe not, but there were no rules against it at that time and it helped us build a better team.

A GM with a functioning brain would have used the compliance buyout instead of choosing to screw the franchise over down the road.

I don't remember the exact year the rule was made or how much he had been paid up to that point.

I think the buyout would have been around 48 million dollars, and then turn around and re sign him to an equally lucrative deal.

It's hard to imagine Aquilini green lighting that.

Would it have been the best plan?

In hindsight yeah it appears so.

But no one is going to cough up 50 mil because there's a chance this would happen.

    Thanks Gillis.

This was a good contract when it was signed.  Kept his cap hit down and we had a wicked goalie locked up.

He almost played the entire length of it,  few goalies have that kind of longevity.

I don't blame Gillis for the deal.

It was the retroactive punishment that screwed us. Thank Bettman.

So the free agency class of 2022 looks decent with players like Coutourier, Seth Jones, Alexandre Barkov. This could and should be the year the Canucks make a big free agent splash to compete for the cup.

All things said and done today, hopefully the hockey gods give us a break to get Eriksson gone, but if he rides it out as is his right the Canucks would get 9 million in space from those two contracts/penalties off the books.

Hopefully for the time being Juolevi and eventually Woo turn into must have type players. The team can still be competitive

I will be surprised if any of those 3 names hit free agency.

They will all be re-signed before that.

Too bad because I would love Seth Jones

  12. My thoughts are similar to the OPs and will reserve final judgement on how Miller does here in a larger role.

I understand why the trade was made and we don't know who else was in on Miller and if that conditional pick was the only way we were getting him instead of another team.

I have read a few statistics stating similarities between Horvat and Miller and their points per 60 minutes are very similar.

I think it's a good fit, we have to wait and see.

I think if we sold Horvat for anything less than a top 5 pick people would be choked, hopefully we gave them a 20th pick or worse.

  13. I remember the day we acquired Luongo, it was on the front page of the newspaper.

I was so excited, he was my favorite goalie at the time and I couldn't believe we got him.

He came in and absolutely stood on his head for us for the first couple years.

Changed his style after that groin injury but ultimately he was a terrific player.

Remember the special with Bobby Lu reading his poem or haiku? Whatever it was.

    "Luuuuuuu.....Beautiful"

Or the twisted tune of "Lola" redone as Luongo.

"Well he is the teams most passionate guy and he saves our ass almost every night yeah Luongo! La la la Luongo!"

He really seemed to enjoy his time here until the last couple years when the gong show began. He gave it his all for us.

I think he was treated unfairly at times, all goalies get blown out sometimes, he couldn't score goals for our offense starved team in the end.

    Thank you Roberto

You were one of my favorites

What a shame you never got a Vezina or the cup.

    Have a great retirement.

Now let's see if we get slapped with recapture, I assume we will, in typical Canuck fashion.

I’m still crossing my fingers we can get Barrie.  He’s one of if not my favourite defenseman in the NHL and on top of that he’s a hometown boy.  Plus wouldn’t our defence look so much less mediocre than the above with this lineup:

    Edler Barrie

    Hughes Myers

    Nemeth Stecher

Then have guys that come in when injuries occur like Sautner, Brisebois, OJ etc.

Nice looking defense, I can't imagine what we would have to give up for Barrie though.  Too much I'm sure.

well is 6yr x6m per with a ntc still not a Brinks truck for a guy that was sheltered on a stacked Winnipeg right side D. I think Myers is a serviceable 2nd pair D but I dont think its wise of us to commit to him unless the contract is no longer than 6yrs and no more than 6m per. That is just my opinion tho. personally, trade for a Colin Miller or Justin faulk and stay the course and not over spend in FA...when does that work out for the Canucks or any team really...

Trade who/what for Miller or Faulk?

We don't have alot of trading chips we are willing to use.

We have guys we want to get rid of but that doesnt mean other teams want them.

I think we have a good shot at landing Myers with a decent price tag.

His wife's family is from B.C. and he owns a place in Kelowna.

If Winnipeg can't keep him, we may be his 2nd choice.

We have some great young players here for him to join.

  16. There are only so many options available.

We aren't going to pry a stud number one away from anybody without giving away someone we don't want to part with.

So many people up in arms over the conditional first for Miller, could you imagine if we sent Horvat or Boeser plus Juolevi away to get one?

Myers is available, performs adequately,  has size and could come at a decent price tag of 6 or 7 mil. Its 2019, that's not a bad price.

Sometimes you gotta take what you can get.

I would like to see Myers beside Hughes.

Very true, however a lottery pick 2 years from now would be a disaster.  We’ll find out what he has in store, JB has a history of bad UFA deals and trading history so should be interesting.  If we make the playoffs in at least one of the two years, the trade will turn out worth the risk.

    Still an overpayment IMO

I think that if we are a lottery team still in 2021 then there are bigger problems and our rebuilt core isn't good enough.

We can't just accumulate top 10 picks until Horvat is in his late 20s and breaking down.

I like the message that this trade sends to our young guns.

You guys are ready for the next step, management is behind the group they have and are actively trying to acquire the remaining pieces and help they need.

I think if I was in Horvats shoes and the other young guys I love this deal.

And if they ink Myers he is going to be a big factor in that room.

On a side note, does anyone elses brain keep thinking we just acquired this guy?
