I know this is such a small subtle play.

but podkolzin dumping and getting his own puck behind the net maintain control after

when we drafted him there was so little scouting material to go off but number one feedback from him I heard from scouts was he always wins puck battles and can dump and retrieve himself to gain the zone and that has translated and can see continue to get better as his body matures even more

    I really like this kid

There was tons of scouting wasn't there?

He was ranked 3rd OA but was staying in Russia.

I have to say, our organization’s track record of developing defensive prospects is horrendously atrocious.

Almost every team has one of those diamond in the rough defenseman that goes on and becomes a serviceable NHL defenseman, apart from their drafted defenseman. And most these teams have 1 or 2 quality defensive prospects already in the pipeline. Other than Hughes who really didn’t need much development at all, we literally have 0 promising, up and coming defenseman in our line up.

Our defensive group and depth consists a mishmash of other teams scraps, ATO’s and projects, depth and declining defenseman. Poolman, Dekeyser, Dermott, Wolanin, Myers, hell OEL is overpriced to shit.

Not to mention the ones that didn’t pan out such as Juolevi, Chatfield, Sautner after years and years of “development”.

And then our depth consists of Juulsen, Burroughs (probably our only solid depth defenseman), Rathbone, etc. Brisebois and Woo either not having the proper chances of placed in productive situations to succeed, with the latter being totally misused by Cull.

Our defensive group and pipeline is worse than Edmonton, Toronto, freaking Montreal, Philly, Seattle, etc. It’s a joke.

It doesn’t matter we were a top 10 5 on 5 team defensively, I’m willing to bet most of that is due to Demko literally breaking his back to keep us in games.

We need to make a trade for a defenseman. We will not be a competitive team if we can’t add at least one more QUALITY defenseman in our line up.

I wouldn’t mind a trade that involves either Garland, Boeser, or Horvat to address this issue. Rathbone and perhaps maybe Hoglander are the only players that we can afford to let go to add as sweetners to a potential deal, but ideally we keep as many young guys as possible. The thing is, I’d much rather accomplish this now then later on. It may very well be too late.

This can't be a surprise to people. If the casual fan doesn't see this they probably don't know what offside is.

You're correct, thought they had 4 left. Really makes me think that they should have sent down around another 10 guys today.

Might see more cuts tomorrow before the game. There's a lot of guys there who aren't going to make even the bottom 6, and some just need some additional playing time in Abbotsford before they can be considered.

I think some guys are hanging on as Abby isn't open for business?

Edmonton also dumped Schultz who is a two time cup champ. They also dumped Maroon who is a three time cup champ. They dumped Hall who won the Hart the following season.

They also dumped Dubnyk, Talbot, and Marino. I could go on and on. Let’s just say how Edmonton values talent probably isn’t the best example.

As for Carolina dumping him they just picked up Burns this offseason and have no cap space. They need to preemptively dump cap in order to activate Pacioretty later in the season too.

Obviously they feel like they Bear is the easiest contract to move and a player they can replace with younger/cheaper players. If cap wasn’t an issue I’m sure they would like to keep him.

Yea I get it. Still not a top 4..Won't fix the actual problem. Improved yes. Fix, no.

Except he’s not a fringe NHL player. Your take is quite obviously a pessimistic one.

Bear would be a solid addition for the right price. And with the lack of available D men right now is probably the best we can do.

When actual fringe NHLers like Lundqvist are going for 1st round picks, you know the market just isn’t there right now.

Pessimistic for sure but why is Carolina moving him and why did Edmonton of all teams dump him?

    Cap?

  6. 9 minutes ago, DeNiro said:

Saying he’s not good is a bit extreme.

Is he a legit top 4? Maybe not. But he’s a hell of alot closer than Dermott, Rathbone, Burroughs or Dekeyser.

Unless we wanna trade 1sts for Chychrun we need to be shopping in the bargain bin right now.

Well sure it is extreme. Any fringe NHL player is AMAZING.

He's not a top 4 dman on a contender. He might not even make Calgary. So add him into the mix of #5-7 dman the Canucks have. Doesn't solve the actual root problem.

Burroughs is a #8 guy and  Dekeyser shouldn't be considered. But here we are.

I think after watching the first 4 preseason games a trade for a D is more than likely now.

I expect an Ethan Bear acquisition in the next week. Hopefully we don’t overpay.

He is also not good. It's an improvement but not by much.

Having said that it's not easy to find these guys.

I know the defense group is the hot topic these days, but I was really hoping under Boudreau/some tweaks that the group would be good. Not great but good.  I didnt watch the game last night but Im definitely getting a bit worried…..

Coaching only goes so far. The right side is atrocious.

The rest of the team is very good. Only time will tell if it balances out but there's no more poking fun at Toronto if the Canucks don't improve their back end.

Let's face it. Poolman was a terrible signing. I'm beginning to accept it. He'll be bought out next summer.

Still hope he proves me wrong.

Way rather have Burroughs in the lineup though.

    Beginning?

You are late to the party! The right side SUCKS.

Im going to start watching JR a bit more closely.  Hes the type of player who I think will get better as the season goes along/gets adjusted.  For now, as long as he can be solid defensively and be consistent with simple plays he will be on the right path.

    Who is JR?

Just got back from Vegas. Saw the Knights thump the Avs 7-1 the other night. Really nice, fun building. They have this thing where if the Knights score 2 goals in a period, everyone at the game gets 2 free tacos at Taco Bell. Neat idea, but did not collect. Kind of funny how the fans yell "SHAME SHAME!"  over and over when the other team takes a penalty. The mascot, drum line and cheerleaders came parading through our hotel (NY NY) just before the game. T-Mobile Arena is basically next door. They sure know how to get the fans fired up in Vegas. For fun I put $20 down on the Canucks to win it all this year  Never know. Wins $1,000 anyway. GCG!

Then last night, my wife and I went to see Iron Maiden in Seattle. Still great after all these years.

Fun trip, but I missed Canucks hockey talk etc over the last week. Can't wait to get this season started.

Man I want to see a game in Vegas so much!

Is poolman not the X factor for the blueline?

if he can stabilize his game then everything falls into place a little nicer

i really hope he can be that guy he was brought in to be

    hughes-poolman

    oel-myers

    rathbone-schenn

    dermott-Burroughs

    No he's bad.

A 30 year old dman with 160 NHL games.

    Give me a break.

I don’t even cheer goals at home watching the game, maybe a fist pump if it’s a player I like. We get scored on I shrug lol

These games are meaningless, hell the Oilers won preseason for like 7 out of 8 years and went on to draft top 10 all 8 of those years. Canucks had a mediocre record in 10/11 and went to the Finals. People need to relax and just enjoy pre season for what it is. Young guys getting their first or only shot at an NHL job.

Exactly. Just don't get hurt and get in game shape. Wins are useless.

Injuries will happen. Just try and minimize and not cry about them.
