  1. Goldobin is ranked 26th by ISS, he could potentially fall to 36th. I think he will end up being the steal of the draft. High end talent on a terrible team.

His teammate DeAngelo would also be amazing at 36th.

If we draft Ritchie I think it would be interesting to draft Cornel and see if they can develop together.

Kevin Fiala is another guy who could drop. Incredible numbers for a 17 year old in the SEL. 17 points in 25 games between reg reason and playoffs.

Roland McKeown could also drop to 36. Good puck mover, great shot, solid positioning. Physical and big enough but more of an offensive type player.

  2. I think there is a decent chance Draisitl falls to 6th, as there is often a team who picks a little off the board (I am looking at the Islanders). I think there is a slim chance Calgary maybe goes for Virtanen or Edmonton goes for Ritchie. Islanders are wild card.

Wishful thinking - we likely end up picking between Ritchie, Virtanen or Ehlers. If I were GM I would probably pick Virtanen, as a fan I hope we pick Ritchie.

Draisitl had 105 points while the team's second highest scoring forward had 61. Ritchie had 39 goals 79 points in 61 games, Cornel 62 points in 68 games and then the third highest scoring forward had 48. These two players were a head above everyone else and stars on their team.

Virtanen on the other hand had a much lower ppg with 71 in 71 while two other forwards on the team had 85. This can be looked at a number of ways, but I interpret it as him having much better linemates which of course boosts his numbers (which are already far lower). Ehlers also plays alongside Drouin.

Brett MacLean was ranked 14th for NA skaters and looked like an absolute steal at 32nd. He does have scoring ability but not enough to stick in the NHL and has played only 18 games. Playing with Tavares (134 points) obviously boosted MacLean's numbers (100 points).

Dany Roussin went second round after scoring sick numbers with Crosby. Plays in the LNAH.

Those examples are obviously more for Ehlers than for Virtanen, but that said I wouldn't mind Virtanen but I am praying for Draisitl and hoping for Ritchie.

  3. We are the 10th youngest team in the league. Boston is the oldest, Pittsburgh is third oldest.

The core is aging but this team isn't old. That said, giving insane amounts of ice time to the twins early on probably wasn't the wisest since they are 33 and not 27.

I think with young guys coming in we have the opportunity to role four lines next year, three once injuries hit (and thus being better prepared since our "fourth line" to start the year will be moving up from 12 to 15 minutes, vs 5 to 12 and adding all the minutes to the top lines).

  4. If Draisaitl or Dal Colle fell to us that would be amazing. Ritchie is a huge boom or bust. He could become a nastier version of Nathan Horton or end up as a Rupp. But gotta love that upside.

Doubt we take a defenseman first round, I have a gut feeling we'll end up with Virtanen, Perlni or McCann (safer picks). I wouldn't mind Ehlers either.

Kapanen and Nylander are far too risky.

  5. What do you guys think of Haydn Fleury? 6'3'' 204 lbs LHD Defenseman. He is expecting to go in the 1st round late in the top 10.

    Here's a profile I found.

A rangy two-way defenseman, Haydn Fleury has made his way to the number six North American skater in Central Scouting's rankings. He is solid defender and uses his speed, composure, vision and physicality to control the defensive zone. He has not quite developed his offensive play to the same level, but that is not to say he lacks promise. He has an above-average shot and moves the puck fairly well but he his vision is somewhat limited in the offensive zone. He has, however, improved in these areas this season and has produced better numbers because of it.

As far as comparisons go, I would liken him to a Brent Seabrook or Jay Bouwmeester. Defensively he plays a similar game to Seabrook because of his size, speed, and physicality, while offensively he could potentially turn into a Bouwmeester-like player, due a good shot, the ability to jump in on the rush, and above average passing.

Never a bad thing to improve your prospect pool when it comes to Defense but we need more wingers though. Would really like to get him if we somehow manage to get another top 10 pick.

I wouldn't mind Fleury. I am kind of hoping we take a big scorer like Ritchie or Perlini and land another top 10 pick and select either Ehlers/Nylander or Fleury. Perhaps if we grab a pick around 20 the two guys I would look at would be either Goldobin or DeAngelo. Considering there was only one other player with 60 points (Latta with 68) their numbers are astronomical compared to others on the team.

  6. The attached article also notes he was named to the 2013-2014 New England Hockey Writers Association Division I All-Star Team, along with team mate Devin Shore.

    From the article:

Still a shame he didn't get in the top 10 for the Hobey Baker, but good to see him getting recognition for a great season.

Insane that he didn't. Lead dmen in goals while being a beast defensively along with finishing fourth in fan voting.

  7. he has been alot shinier than Pirlini, poppin in clutch goals. Gotta think it moves him up a peg or 3 in the draft positions. Lets see how he fares against Oshawa

4 of the top 10 scorers in the OHL playoffs are Canucks...might as well add a 5th!

  8. We probably would have waited till the 3rd round to take Mallet, but since we had no 3rd or 4th round pick they decided to take a chance on him for some stupid reason. For a player with no offensive success in prior years and then score 34 as an overager in the QMJHL is not a compelling reason to pick him.

At least Dane Fox was a ppg player for 3 seasons before his breakout and at that point scored a mind blowing 64 games. I would have been happier with taking a flyer on Dane Fox in the 2nd round vs a player like Mallet (lucky enough we got him for free).

There were a lot of better picks available. Komaschuk, Severson, Shore, and Bozon were much more obvious picks at the time. None have had success in pro but they are all 2 years younger and have shown promise in their respective leagues.

  9. I want the Canucks scouting staff to take a look at Oshawa Generals winger Hunter Smith hes ranked 140 for North American Skaters in ISS rankings.

The guy is 6'6 he had 16 goals 24 assists and 100 PIMs in the regular season and got 3rd in votes as the most improved player in the ohl eastern conference.

But hes gone beast mode in the playoffs putting up 1 goal and 8 assists soo far in 3 games. He's definitely raised his draft stock

I had him on the radar for 3rd or 4th round, hilarious that another person brought up the same player!

Funny thing is he has probably gone from a fourth round pick to a late second - early third given his recent performance.

  10. Kassian has two less ESP than Kesler in four less games played.

Kassian has two more ESP than Hodgson this season.

This is with 3rd line minutes alongside two players who can't score (Richardson & Booth).

Powerplays can really inflate a player's point totals.

  11. I remember hating our group of forward prospects. No size or grit whatsoever. Skilled guys but Hodgson was the only blue chip talent.

    1. Hodgson

    2. Schroeder

    3. Grabner

    4. White

    5. Rodin

    VS

    1. Bo Horvat

    2. Nicklas Jensen

    3. Brendan Gaunce

    4. Hunter Shinkaruk

    5. Alexandre Grenier

    6. Dane Fox

    7. Cole Cassels

Good mix of size, grit and skill!

  12. Wouldn't mind another game breaker type of player in Ehlers as well, it's been a while since we had a player that can lift the audience out of their seats since the Bure era. This kid will be a great player with the proper guidance. If Ehlers was in our system he'd be really protected with the big bodies that we have in our team, Ehlers would look great in a Canucks Jersey.

Ehlers, Virtanen, Perlini, or Ritchie are all good picks for different reasons and hopefully one falls to us (I would be happy with any).

I think Virtanen, followed by Perlini, are the safer picks. Ehlers and Ritchie are gambles that could pay off immensely. I think there is a big drop to guys like McCann or Barbashev.

The thing that worries me about Ehlers is the fact he plays with Drouin, which could heavily inflate his stats.

Goldobin on the other hand is putting up huge numbers on a bad team. 94 points in 67 games, while the 2nd and 3rd highest scoring forwards have 66 and 38 points. While he is an extremely talented player I don't see us picking a small russian.

  13. If we won those games against PHX and DAL after the Heritage Classic we would be very much in the race with 77 points, 3 points ahead of PHX and 5 points ahead of DAL (albeit with a bunch of games in hand).

Losing those two games pretty much sealed our fate. The team is playing better now but better won't cut it.

I would rather us drop to 23rd and pick 7th overall vs picking 11th or 12th.

  14. It would be cool to see us grab Richie first round (huge tough power forward in the Horton/Burns mould) and his linemate Eric Cornel in the second round (6'2 playmaker, near ppg).

Third round I would role the dice on Nikita Tyramkin out of the KHL. 6'7, 228 lbs, decent skater. Passed up on two drafts but it is hard to pass up a dman his size who can skate and has a mean streak.

Would also like to see us take a flyer on Hunter Smith, maybe 4th round? Late bloomer, teammate of Cole Cassels. 6'7, 210 lbs and is an absolute beast when it comes to dropping the gloves. 40 points in in 64 games this season with only 1 OHL point prior, he could be on the upswing.

  15. Anyone else finding themselves annoyed when the Nucks win recently? Just get a better pick!

It's a terrible attitude to have lol, but it seems like the best option. It'd be awful to finish 9th in the west and be outside the top 10 picks.

    I know!

The player I am really hoping we get is Nick Ritchie. 6'3, 235lbs. Scored 20 goals his last 20 games and apparently he absolutely manhandles guys in fights.

  16. This draft doesn't have the super big name top picks and is not particularly deep. However, there are a good number of quality players in the 1-8 range that have size and skill.

I am guessing the Canucks will end up with the 6th overall pick. Hopefully one of Dal Colle, Draisaitl, or Fleury fall to us.

  17. He was quite highly touted early on, probably projected 2nd or 3rd round pick but during his draft year he was injured and was the last ranked player on the final report. Good to see that he has found his game and recovered well from injuries!

  18. You have to give it to GMMG, he has done a great job turning around our prospect pool. We went from 4 CHL prospects to 9 in one year. Not including Tanev, Schroeder and Kassian (playing in the AHL because of the lockout), the only players to get at all excited about were:

    Gaunce

    Corrado

    Lack

    Jensen

    This year we have:

    Cassels

    Gaunce

    Fox

    Jensen

    Shinkaruk

    Subban

    Kenins

    Hutton

    Grenier

    Archibald

    Lain

    Eriksson

Most players were newly acquired, some players have had much better seasons (Archibald, Grenier, Hutton). There is no player of note playing worse than last season.

  19. ^Whoa, Dalps over Burr..What's this world comin' to?

Put Hansen on two lines by accident. Schroeder in, Richardson moved to the right side.

Burrows is the least productive forward in the entire NHL with 300+ minutes played, despite having the team's highest percentage of offensive zone starts and have productive line mates. In fact, Burrows has contributed to a measly 13% of his line's offence.

Also, some crude win loss numbers. The team is somewhere around 18-14 without Burrows in the lineup at 10-22 with.

Only based these lines off of stats, not my actual opinion btw.

    Higgins Sedin Kassian

    Archibald Matthias Hansen

    Dalpe Kesler Sestito

    Booth Schroeder Richardson
