Gillis' main strengths have been undrafted gems like Tanev and signing what are (at the time of signing anyway not so much after though) reasonable contracts for core guys. His drafting has been decent but not spectacular.
His weaknesses are overvaluing players he trades for and undervaluing players he trades away. His trade record is not very good when looked upon in its entirety. He also lets a lot of players walk away for nothing even when there is no reasonable replacement in sight.
If we are going to rebuild it ain't going to be easy for Gillis to do it. He is the one who committed this core to long term deals with a lot of NTC. Unwinding that a season later hurts his credibility with agents and players not to mention with fans and ownership.
Gillis is reactive rather than proactive. And the rebuild this team needs has to be made from a proactive point o view to be successful imo. Gillis is a good business guy and good at building the framework behind the scenes. He is not a very good GM at what GM's are supposed to do though.
If you look at our teams performance before gillis came and after.... let me just say this. We made the finals in his third year. If there is anyone capable of turning this thing around in a hurry it's gillis.
He doesn't specialize in one main thing he has had variety of strengths and if you look at his overall players acquistions(trades, signings, drafts) for every mistake he finds 3 good players. His mistakes get talked about so much around here.

what is your point??
30/30 GMs would take
Luongo
Schneider
Coho
Erhoff
Torres
over
Horvat
Markstrom
Hutton
Kassian
Matthias
Luongo, schneidr, and coho are currently all better individually than any of the players we recived in those trades
what kills us is that he mismanaged the assets, not that he traded these players
from all of the talent we lost, we have no one in the 19-25 range on our roster who is contributing, that, in a sentence is the exact reason why we are struggling
yes but in the future we will look at the post again and you will see that.

Good news is that 99% chance Canucks will end season with 2 wins (against Calgary and Edmonton)
I hate to break it to you but we usually lose those games at or near end of the season against those teams: just look at the history since the lockout
2006- 3-2 Loss to Edmonton near the end of the season
2007- 3-2 Loss to Calgary near the end of the season
2008- 2-1 Loss to Edmonton, 7-1 Loss to Calgary at the end of the season
2009- 5-3 Loss to Edmonton near the end of the season
2010- 7-3 Win against Calgary (Henrik was trying to win the scoring title and had a 4 point night)
2011- 4-1 and 2-0 Losses to Edmonton near the end of the season
2012- 3-2 Loss to the flames at the end of the season
2013- 7-2 Loss to the Oilers at the end of the season
The fact that even in 2011 and 2012 we had these losses shows how it is entirely possible for calgary and edmonton to win against us. I totally disagree with the fact that it is 99% certain that we beat them both.

VAN - a fall from grace - Luongo, Coho, schneider, Erhoff, Torres - amazing how these guys left and we have almost nothing on our roster to show for these guys...
If you don't show the returns everyone will think Gillis did worse than he actually did.
Luongo- Markstrom(Future#1) Maithas(Solid #3 Centre)
Schneider- Bo Horvat(Future #1-3 Centre)
CoHo- Kassian(Future PWF)
Erhoff- 4th Round Pick which was traded for Pahlson but Gillis made up for it by selecting a stud of a puck moving Dman in Ben Hutton in the 5th Round.
Torres- no return but he would have been suspended with the way he was playing with us and the way we get suspensions which is why Gillis didn't re-sign him.
To sum it all up we got Maithas, Markstrom, Horvat, Kassian and a recovery pick in Ben Hutton which may not have happened had we not traded Ehrhoff. I think it's unfair to judge everything right now Gillis is clearly building towards the future.

Did anyone notice how loud the crowd was today? Been a while since I heard it that loud(reminded me the leafs crowd when they are close to scoring but miss:very loud!).

I wanted to go for the pick but forget the pick it's much more fun watching the team develop chemistry especially Jensen, Henrik and Burrows.
I know we won't make the playoffs but I think that's the best part; you don't have to worry if we lose and just enjoy the ride.

I'm not bring up another Hodgson VS Kassian thread. We should be already past that.
What would you guys do with Kassian this off season? I would probably just offer him a 2 year contract worth $1million/year.
He's 23 now and I think for the next 2 years if he's still putting up similar stats he should be considerred a AHLer/4th liner.
With Jensen now emerging, if Kassian still doesn't pan out like we hope, this could be his last contract with the canucks.
He's played 6 games and kassian is still young.

He is a spark plug for this team. It's why he got the dollars he does, it's why he gets the minutes... And I think that him slumping had an errant effect on the team too, they all have a tonne of respect for him and it was like a voodoo curse on them when he's misfiring.
It may benefit the team and the canucks to separate the sedins. Burrows work, Henriks passing and jensens rifle, seems to be working well. And then you get the sniper Kesler has needed all along in Daniel, and give them the versatile Higgins. Not bad top six.
well he did score 13 goals last year so it's kinda his fault. "Never doubt 13 is a unlucky number".The Apollo 13 space mission found that out pretty quick.

like someone said already Canucks need teams to win behind us in order for them to move up just because the Canucks lose every game doesn't mean they will drop down that much in the standings 1-5 are pretty much staying where they are so 6-14 is where the Canucks pick and if people say the draft is weak then it's on the scouts to pick a player in that spot
yes but the teams will eventually have to win right now we have just passed 2 teams and now are 2 spots down on the draft spot. Really frustrating, cause we are on pace to get nothing out of this season.
Like we were sitting in the 8th spot in the draft a week ago now it`s totally different.

we are getting screwed out of the pick now just like calgary and ottawa from years before.

I'm with you on this. I've been saying it since we drafted him.
yup everyone will come out and say this now that jensen is scoring just wait till he goes cold

Its a catch 22.
Since Torts is a good playoff coach, do we try and get in, in hopes of an Oilers 06 run ?
Or do we tank... This is indeed the question
Dude it's not even a question anymore our loss to the caps, stars and yotes basically means we missed them everyone knows we missed them at this point. We might come close but we will still miss them.

lu with his first career win against Vancouver.
-
I expect Lu to get a shutout or play really well. I wouldn't be surprised if the panthers gain some ground in the standings with this game.
-
How'd you quote that so fast!?
this is a nhl website....
-
Haven't noticed Henrik..did they SCRATCH him?!
-
man Kane is sick, power, speed, skill
basically can say that for the entire jets team they are big, fast and skilled.
-
1st overall 1st overall 1st overall we can do it believe
can someone tell gillis the fans and players are ready for that cause he said we are still gonna try to make a run for the playoffs
-
I remember back in the day when torts used to call a time out and WE were the ones who scored. Time flies....
-
Gillis' beard-thing is amazing.
So are these http://vansunsportsblogs.com/2014/03/07/the-many-beards-of-mike-gillis-a-gallery-of-superior-alternatives/

Jensen on the PP!
-
did hank get the silver stick award? damn I missed the start of the game

Was it tort style AV was using when we had massive injuries and missed the playoffs in his second year as bench boss, we still kept him and we eventually went on to the SCF before the slide happened since 2011. If anyone is going at seasons end its Gillis for failing to trade players when they needed to be traded, getting less than fair value for players traded, not picking up the kind of players we have needed to fill the gaps we have had since 2011.
Two things wrong with your post
1. Lu leaving the team cause he had a kid and us having no goalie depth caused us to miss the playoffs that year.
2. AV did not use anything similar to torts style which drives your player into ground this season.
-
He doesn't believe a change is a good idea right now. Gillis because ownership met with Gillis twice prior to the deadline and approved his plans for the team moving forward. Torts because he recommends letting the season play out.
Whatever you think, and remembering these are just rumours at this point, we do know there haven't been any rumours for offers that people agreed were reasonable.

The first three years they were including 2006 when the oilers squeaked in to the eight slot and went all the way to the finals.
And in 2012 we went 8-1-1 going into the playoffs our only loss in regulation was against calgary. The more surprising one was 2011 we went 7-3-0 going into the playoffs with the two losses to the oilers.
If the team gave up they wouldn't be winning all the other games which they were. What I was originally responding to was saying "its 99% certain that we will beat these teams in the final two games", even you can't agree with that given our history.
