Edlerberry
His cap hit penalty is only $250k~ because of how his deal was structured. It almost looks like, in hindsight, it was structured this way on purpose to give Koval this out if he wanted to take it, or if the Devils weren't in financial situation to pay later on - some kind of under the table agreement. His annual cap hit of $6.67m is obviously large, and usually players want their money up front, but this deal has the bulk of the money starting in year 3. So he only made $6m year 1, and $6m year two, which means the Devils were actually paying LESS than the cap hit, which is of no benefit. Then with the shortened pro-rated season, they paid him $11m. So half a season of $4.3~m - 1.3~m spread out over the remainder of his contract is their penalty. Obviously this wasn't in the CBA when the deal was signed, but even just from a financial standpoint (Devils) and a personal standpoint (Ilya) this may have been how they structured it to give them both a mutual out - and then since the CBA it still works out well in the Devil's favour. Edlerberry
Can someone please explain what would happen if lui retires? What would be the cap hit for the Canucks and would we loose any draft picks? Also would it be different if he retired this year or next, etc?
