I think we are all afraid of an albatross contract that you struggle with years later, but for every one of Alexander Semin contracts there is a Marian Hossa contract.  

Don't forget that the Canucks (unfortunately) now provide the easiest way to make it into the NHL.  We had part-time janitors filling in last year.  Signing one big UFA will not have a big effect there and is further reason for it instead of getting a bunch of smaller UFAs who will clog up development.

Not that Chicago is gonna regret signing it, but it's not a great example in this case.  Hossa is not gonna play until he's 42 and they are gonna be stuck with his cap hit plus the re-capture.  Although, It is a good example of how signing a 'bad contract' can be totally worth it.  If we get 5 good years out Erikssen, and then two bad ones, that's probably not the end of the world.  At least we got the player.
