Popular Post -DLC-
Quote Canucks Sports & Entertainment are devastated to hear about the passing of a cherished member of our Canucks family, Vern Frick. Vern was a beacon of kindness and warmth, always brightening the hearts of every single fan he encountered. He graced our buildings with his lively presence as a dedicated Host for over 53 years, dating back to the very first Canucks game played on October 9, 1970 at the Pacific Coliseum. Our deepest condolences to Vern's family, friends, and colleagues. Vern will be deeply missed, and his legacy will forever live on. Vern Frick: Forever a Canuck. I have to tell you, I'm gutted over this. I met Vern over 13 years ago and he was just the sweetest, kindest man. Soft spoken, always with a big smile on his face and arms extended out for a hug. I've spoken before about how the entire experience of a game is important to me, not just the results. And Vern was always a big part of that. Stationed at the glass by the zamboni entrance, every pre game I'd go down for a hello and that hug. A good ol' hockey chit chat. The games weren't complete unless a visit with Vern was part of them. He was right beside me on the glass when Getzlaf knocked Hamhuis out cold (with a dirty hit that was obstructed from view...but he and I saw it up close and personal). We winced and he said "they've gotta get that stuff out of hockey". I felt sick and he helped console me because it was pretty awful to see a guy's face hit the glass (he was already out cold from the elbow....people didn't know that part). Vern knew his hockey. There from day one with the team, he had stories to tell and experiences to share. Worked the PNE too...I recall he said he's also hosted at Lions' games. Whitecaps too? Damn, came out of nowhere. Just saw him recently and he was his usual happy self...no signs of trouble. Here's to you, Vern, RIP lovely friend. I shall miss you and I'm not sure I'll go down to that spot for awhile...just won't be the same. EDIT: Going through my texts this morning looking for something. Then, wham...May 28 (friend) "Hey, I saw Vern the other day. He says hi and see you next year for the warmup". My heart really is breaking right now. My response: "Vern's so awesome, so happy to know him". You just never know the twists and turns in life, people. Let's all appreciate one another and be kind. For Vern. Like Vern. YET ANOTHER! A long time friend from school sent me a message this morning saying his Mom was friends with Vern (postal workers from before so called retirement). When you're an awesome person that stuff spreads. Connects and unifies us. OK, enough. Still processing this one. 1 2 5
