  1. OEL has it made. 20 mill in cold cash, on top of whatever he has earned so far, and still able to re-sign on a new team and make more. His agent on Dali and Donny was saying at least 10 teams have called him about his client. They haven't called anyone themselves. I still think it was a short sighted decision not to at least have him play more sheltered minutes for one more season before a buyout. We'd have even more cap (per season) left to play with, and two less years to pay him to steal 2.1 m. cap money away. The next couple of seasons after this next one are way more crucial to have cap than this one. But the Aquilini quick fix strategy goes on. It might work, if the plan is to squeek us into the playoffs in the next few years, a temporary bump, but I just don't see the sustainability plan.
  2. Horvat was averaging about 55 points a season...until his freak retirement contract year. Horvat was a bigger top center, and good on faceoffs, so he is a more valuable player than Boeser, but it makes you shake your head how Lamoriello would pay that kind of money and term for a player who will most likely fall back to his normal point average.....and decline. I respected JR put his foot down about offering a contract mostly based on his past numbers. I think we escaped another disaster when Bo turned his nose up at 7 x 7, if that was his last offer.
  3. To add to my comment on the NHL not taking advantage of marketing player personalities, Its pretty sad when the only ads you see on TV with NHL star players in them are gambling ads.
  4. Can't stand Trump humpin Dana White. But like many, I have to admit he is not wrong about marketing. And their awards ceremonies are soooooo cringe. The only marketing they have been doing lately is marketing the virtual ad space on the boards. Which actually discourages new NHL viewers. Having to follow a little puck is hard enough, without another giant puck flying around the rink right above the ice surface. I don't think anyone in media is talking about this new desecration of the sport with these animations going on right above the playing surface, because its the same sponsors who pay their cheques. Anyways, don't get me started. I wish more people were as mad as I am about that. They don't use their own star players in any kind of clever, witty, funny way. The last time I remember they did this effectively was with the "Swedish twins are coming over" ad. Its not that they can't do this, they just don't have the will. Bettman is a dork.....the worst kind, he's a control dork.
  5. Thing with Myers is he is a 'it was the best of times, it was the worst of times' kind of player. People who defend Myers rightly point out that he is has some good qualities as a defenceman. Some that you can't get with a smaller D. He has been able to break up plays by his long reach with his stick, that a smaller D cannot. He can pinch off players on the boards when he chooses to use his size to his advantage. And if his hits ever connect, they are quite effective. But his cons defeat his pros. He just does not have the hockey IQ to compete against other teams top lines, or other skill lines who DO have hockey sense. Something you cannot teach a player. It shows in his hesitation when he does recover a puck. Either gets it taken away again, or passes to a player who is already covered, or worse directly onto the stick of the opponent. Which happens 2 or 3 times some games. That is what is killing his game. Its what the Jets realized and got rid of him, despite his size. Then there's also the Big Man syndrome with the refs. We all want him to play more physical. But every fricken time he starts having a good physical game where he is hitting more....you just know he will eventually get a "Big Man" penalty for having too high up of a shoulder. Then he will be even more shy to bump anyone for weeks after. I propose they totally change his responsibilities to a more offensive role. I don't mean more time on the point on the PP shooting at shin pads. I mean giving him the green light to go to the net more. He is pressured, as one of our few, or only, big D to always play a defensive role. But he is not good at that. I remember there were a few games, for whatever reason, Myers was playing more offensive minded with the puck, moving forward, taking close shots. With his body, he can also use it to clear space in front of the OTHER net as well. Have a partner who knows his role is playing the more defensive partner. Just kicking around ideas to make him more useful
  6. The seasons go by Canucks fans only can wait For a Cup so far
  7. Well, I wouldn't blame him for resigning based on the sh!#show in Vancouver since he got here. But if you are talking about re-signing, it won't be based on a buyout for OEL. There is also a strong team bond and fellow countryman bond. I highly doubt he'd go to management and demand OEL be bought out before he'd ever consider a long term deal here. If that was what you were inferring. And as wai_lai416 pointed out, if he and his agent were smart, they'd maybe be more concerned, as I am, about kicking the can down the road to deal with the added cap problems later, just when Petey and co. will be in a better position to go further, with another piece added......if they had only been even one year more patient before any buyout.
  8. Yeah logically, it seems like if a person is earning their money in another country, which Canuck players are for a good size minority of their games in the season, they should only be paying tax on that earned money based on the tax laws that exist in that State. Even more logical for American born players. But alas, the Canadian government is not so generous. It has a lot to do with the employer, where they are located. Even if you are American, if you signed that contract in Canada for a team based in Canada, owned by a Canadian, even if its in US dollars, you pay Canadian tax. And if you are a Canadian, there are still laws that say you pay Canadian taxes no matter where it comes from. The only thing you can do is avoid double taxation by applying for that each year. As both countries have this set up. But all that means is you are garanteed that you don't pay any more than you would in Canada. So it does no good for say Miller to apply for this, for games in no tax States, or even lower tax States, as he'd get zero subtraction from his Canadian bill. https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tips/the-usa-canada-tax-treaty-explained-14788
  9. Don’t like this at all Could have not bought him out, or in 2 years. Or this summer. But I thought a good compromise would have been a buy out after next season. Then we could have shaved something like 7 million off cap in total, and also, maybe more important, finished OELs buy out 2 years sooner. We could have carried OEL playing limited minutes for one freakin year. I do not think that happening would make any difference in us making or not making the playoffs next season When this team is in such a crunch, we are once again kicking the can down the road. For what we could have gained in the years that actually will matter, we save cap space initially, when the only place we will be playing in the SCF will be in Francesco’s head does management seriously think we can win the Cup next season? We better because we are setting up to be in the worst possible cap situation at a crucial time in a few years when we have to pay other important pieces. i had more faith in JR to stand up to our short sighted owner, but he’s following the same game plan. It’s always only about the next season. And keep taking huge gambles with the future to scrape together a possible 8th place team that Aqua believes will be the 2024 Canadian miracle on ice. dumb dumb dumb dumb
  10. Got to be smart enough and scout well enough, to pick the right big D. I mean we do/did have Gudbranson, Myers, Tryamkin. But all of those with on ice, or off ice, issues or a combination. Just good solid hard nosed large D men. How far ahead we'd be if we even just had a couple of the top six D that Vegas has.
  11. Who was the GM, with his coach choice, when Pettersson was struggling? Who could have kept better tabs on his preparation in the summer? Who was the GM before Hughes began to improve his defensive game to start to match his offensive game? Who was the GM who was playing hardball with Ian Clarke for the last months of his contract running out, keeping fans on edge? But other than that, Demko developed good under Benning, and JR, I'll say that for free. But who was the GM who traded for Miller at the wrong time in the clubs arch? Other than that, a great player for sure, and I'm glad we have him. And then who actually signed Miller, over the much beloved Horvat and took the heat for that? Every team has promising prospects. Some have more, and much higher rated. But we are starting to build our farm team. Moving it to Abby was a smart move. Hey, despite my sheer bafflement at your defence of Benning, I agree with you here. Hey, if someone starts a Benning thread I'll respond. But I'm not starting one. I want to move on. We do have a very bright future. It does need time and more patience. I really think we will do much better next season. I'm giving JR and co. 3 years to see meaningful improvement. I think they are on course. We do have to stay positive about the future. Whether it was Gillis, or Benning, or a combination of the last number of GMs failures, we are now on the road to greatness. We all want the same thing. Go Canucks Go!

  13. One of the biggest thefts by the crime partners Bettman and McPhee was stealing both Marchessault and Smith from Florida. Bad decision on the cats part to undervalue both of them so badly, but If that pressured misstep hadn't happened, this series may have gone differently.
  14. yay! We can now look forward to watching the Blackhawks pick North Van's Bedard. such is the life of a Canucks fan
  15. Yup. I was there to witness it. And Trevor not only grabbing but dropping the lid off of the Clarence Campbell Bowl onto the ice. Doomed our chances.
  16. Hate that Vegas will win. All their other advantages and then a "Kucherov" move to get an extra 10 million dollar superstar extra cherry on the top. But I'm happy for Stone to win Also for Adin Hill. A fourth string goalie from Comox BC taking advantage of his chance. He done did good!
  17. Feel sorry for the Panthers. Have to play through the longest, most painful period in their hockey lives.
  18. Bonus. Sutherland has also decided on a suspension for Petey for the first 3 games of the new season
  19. St Louis won with the most Canadian team as well. I wish the Canucks management would value Canadian players as much. I really believe they have an advantage because of the country and hockey culture they grew up in, when the chips are down. Horvat now gone. We are a Swedish/American/Russian team now.
  20. So no one on the panel dares to talk about the whistle? Disappointed in Kevin Even the intent to blow should be called if it was a tie. And the ref clearly was blowing the whistle because he thought the goalie had the puck.
