  1. I've caught 3 or 4 Chicoutimi games this year but had my first opportunity to see Zhukenov live last night. He made a strong impression. His anticipation, by which I mean ability to predict the play, was outstanding. It often seemed the puck was following him around when in reality he was finding the right spots. He got a greasy rebound goal on the pp out from a pile of bodies because of it, as example. His compete level seems high. He took a pair of heavy hits, one in the second and one in the third, that certainly left their mark. On both occasions he tried to give it back , to any one he could line up really, the very same shift. He wasn't perfect. He made a few unforced turnovers on low percentage passes. He took an untimely tripping penalty late in the third with his team down by a goal and on the powerplay. Also with their net empty he tried to stickhandle through three Tigres at the blue line, only to turn it over, leading to the empty net goal that iced the game. He did manage to make it through two though.. All in all I thought he was one of the best players on the ice last night.
  2. I guess it is not the norm to have generators in the city? At one point last winter we were without power for a week. Over the course of the season we will lose power several times for multi-day stretches. Very powerful storms on the west coast alongside low population density. We seem to survive.
  3. For those interested Horvat has started the game on a line with Jones and DeFazio. He's looked good in the early going here creating a couple of nice chances.
  4. Giants v Rockets is televised Wednesday night at 7pm. I'll get my first glimpse of Benson. If that highlight reel goal above is any indication it should be a fun season of watching him and the team improve.
  5. Frank 7/10 There was lots to like about this movie. It was funny and lighthearted while managing to broach some solemn stuff. The music was predominantly performed by the cast; Fassbender had a couple of really nice takes. It falters a bit from character action and dialogue that comes off a bit contrived. Even with that bit of clumsiness I'd still recommend it.
  6. I have been watching a few Richard Burton movies of late and while scouring through his acting credits stumbled my way into this. I punched it into google and it came up as a streamable link via the National Film Board of Canada (nfb.ca) Always glad to hear from another Lowry fan. I've read several of his books but Volcano really is the crowning achievement.
  7. I've watched three movies since my last post here. The Grudge 5/10 I do enjoy horror movies as a frequent guilty pleasure but had never bothered to see this one as it made waves upon release. I wasn't missing much. There is little about it that's memorable. A generic plot that is not well executed. The scenes that work the best scarcely show the spirits. They are over-exposed throughout and look bad. Wise Blood 7/10 An interesting period piece set in the segregated south in which a military veteran returns home to find most have migrated to the city. He follows suit and tries to found a church bereft of Christ. I thought the dialogue was strong but the acting heavy handed at times. I think I may have rated this higher had my expectations been slightly tempered. Volcano: An Inquiry Into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry 9/10 This is a spectacular documentary. I can't recommend it highly enough to any of his fans who may be unfamiliar with it or as an antecedent to his work. Everything as presented in the film is superb. All that restrains me from giving it a perfect 10 is its total engrossment with the negative aspects of his life.
  8. The City of Lost Children 8/10 I've been meaning to watch this for a while and having some french company last night it seemed an appropriate time. I really like most Jeunet/ Caro movies and so more or less knew what I was getting into. It was very much of their character driven quirky style. Not my favourite movie of theirs (that title would go to Delicatessen) but still a very enjoyable watch.
  9. Yeah, that one is definitely on the list.
  10. Becket 9/10 Gross historical inaccuracies aside this was a spectacular movie. Great story, acting, and sets. Peter O'Toole opposite Richard Burton in the two lead roles. It's primarily a dialogue driven plot with a few bits of action sprinkled in. Highly recommended to anyone unfamiliar with the movie or either or those two actors.
  11. Interesting to see all the Take Shelter discussion in here as that movie is a few years old now. CDC trend? I remember a movie he did a few years prior to that one in which he again cast Shannon as a bit of an unstable lead. That movie wasn't really about mental illness but definitely shared some themes in the power of family.
  12. Anyone looking for some strong Hitchcock work would be well advised to check out Dial M for Murder. Not sure why it's not mentioned more often than it is when talking about his stuff. I watched Angel Heart last night and can admit to being thoroughly disturbed. I guess that means it's good.
  13. I like Tortorella. I like that the onus is on the players to understand their role; to score, hit, fight, or cheer I get the impression that the directions are made clear. What we're seeing now is a struggle to execute. Whether that is a coaching issue or a personnel problem is difficult to pin down from the outside. I think he's as shown good in-game adaptability accompanied by a welcome passion for total team results. That said a few changes do seem pertinent from this armchair coach. Reduce the Sedins' PK time. They are playing too much for players who aren't producing. I'd like to see Burrows demoted to the third or fourth line until he begins to score (which I'm sure he will). At a minimum get him off the PP. You can't be icing a guy on one of the worst power plays in the league who hasn't scored all season.
