Might have to tweak the package that Vancouver sends out, but I think that's a pretty realistic framework

Imagine a future line of Jensen-Johansen-Kassian :bigblush:

If Ballard has an improved bounce back season, his value rises so we can easily off load him for a no cap hit return and use the money to sign a UFA Weber, not to mention Manny coming off the books and depending on Doan if he signs a 1 or 2 year term if he comes off there's the extra money to re-up Burrows

Absolutely awful for Pittsburgh, bad for CBJ, and the Canucks come out like bandits.

First of all, if the Canucks were giving up Ballard instead of Edler I would agree with you. Edler is a 1st pairing defenceman in Columbus, Marc-Andre Fleury is miles above what they have for goaltending and is only a few steps below Luongo, Brandon Sutter was the major component in the Staal trade.

Canucks lose/gain: Luongo, Edler, Schroeder/Johansen, Letang

Pittsburgh lose/gain: MA Fleury, Letang, Sutter, 1st/Luongo, Nash

Columbus lose/gain: Nash, Johansen/MA Fleury, Edler, Sutter, Shroeder, 1st

Now, how exactly do the Canucks make out like bandits? Luongo all but guaranteed to move out of Vancouver does not diminish the intrinsic value of his skill and abilities. Edler is a top pairing defenceman on most teams, most assuredly in Columbus and Shroeder has the ability to be a very solid 2-way center. Likely not to be a top flight center, but certainly good enough to be on the 2nd line.

Pittsburgh gives up the most in terms of number of assets, but also gets the highest degree of skill in return. Luongo has 4-5 good years left in him imo, and Nash certainly has at least that if not more. You're insane if you don't think Luongo and Nash make Pittsburgh into a scary mother-f'n team in the east.

I fail to see how any one team is losing big time in this deal. 2/3 responses have declared this as a horrible trade for Pittsburgh, if so you are way undervaluing what Luongo and Nash bring that team compared to what they are giving up (#1 goalie, Top 4 defenceman, #2 center (on most young teams) and a late 1st round pick.

1/3 has declared this as a bad trade for Columbus, in the initial deal giving up Johansen and Nash with a return of Edler, Fleury, Sutter, Schroeder AND a 1st round pick.

Each of these deals makes each respective team stronger. I would love to see anyone else come up with a more balanced 3 way hockey trade.

Why would Pittsburgh do this?

Their defence is bad enough with Letang.

@ Jag, I just realized how really thin their blueline depth really is.

Yeah, they would be rolling a D core of

Orpik- Niskanen

Martin- Lovejoy

Engelland- Despres

That would go down as one of the worst in the league.

Hmm.

Vancouver:

Chris Kunitz

Craig Adams

Colton Gillies

Pittsburgh

Rick Nash

Roberto Luongo

Alexander Edler

Columbus

MA Fleury

Brandon Sutter

Jordan Shroeder

Pittsburgh 1st

Gillies and Adams add 4th line size and grit, Kunitz fills out our Top 6 (though admittedly he is a LW and not exactly in our needs)

This deal sucks for Vancouver, while the other teams would be celebrating.
