Dragonfruits
the cap hit still remains on this year only is removed next year so there is no point for any team to buyout a player unless they think that player could get injured like redden and gomez then risk not being able to buyout the player so there really is no strategy involved here players can be bought out in the summer and gm's can figure out then how to get under the cap like they do every year

Dragonfruits
there is really no point in using it now unless you really don't want to use the player and as much as people would love to believe the flyers are going to take a gamble at the beginning of the season by buying out bryz and trading for luongo your sadly mistaken there is no difference in buying them out now or in the summer other than telling that player you don't want them on your team anymore
Heretic
Yes,....but as I replied to Hectic, "I could have used 'upgrade' instead"
Davebabychupperlip
Nuck Luck what you seem to have missed is the buyout were put in place to get under the cap next season. Meaning that if a player is bought out in the summer it doesn't count towards 2013/14 cap (allowing teams to buyout contracts to get them under the lower cap). Where as with the accelerated buy out it does count against the cap for this season. So Bryz and Lo won't be bought out during this season no matter what. Doing so would mean you still have the cap hit counting this season and no player to show for it, The dumbest thing you could do Redden and Gomez were sent home to prevent injury. They are contracts that both teams decided would be bought out. The rules don't allow a team to buyout a player on LTIR. Instead of risking the players being injured this year, and missing the buyout window they decided to not play them. The NHL and NHLPA then decided if that was the case they would create the accelerated buy out so those two players had a chance to start over with new contracts on different teams. That is why most people seem to think they are the only two players that will be bought out.. you are right though, you never know maybe there is a GM out there thinking out side of the box
n00bxQb
Accelerated buyout requires 2 things: 1) The player's permission 2) The player must be placed on waivers prior to the buyout No chance Luongo or Bryzgalov sign off on it and no chance either team places these guys on waivers. Canada Hockey Place
IMO the #1 priority for VAN should be to re-sign Edler. Then after Edler is re-signed, worry about trades, buy-outs, whatever, during the off-season to get under the $64m next season. There's no reason for VAN to buyout Luongo or anyone else now. What needs to happen now is to get Edler re-signed so they know where they stand with the upcoming cap reduction.
WeDreamOfStanley
Its great for Gomez and Redden, would have been pretty crapty for them to sit out a season... i know i know, they are pocketing millions anyways, but being in their shoes wouldn't you much rather get to play and make shmillions rather than not get to play at all? It's good to see they will get a chance to find new teams.
Tortorella's Rant
In b4 King of the BS proposes buying out Luongo. Wait, I think he suggested this already.
thehamburglar
Gomez could be good for us, at CHEAP contract. Has playmaking and defensive abilities

nuck luck
Look at it this way. Say you bought a new car for $33,000. The following year, you go to your wife, honey...the new ones are better than the one we bought, so I'm just going to put a "free" sign on the window of our 1 year old one, cut our losses, and buy a new one for $35,000. I wonder what your wife will say?
