I'm starting to have a good feeling this is going to be an "I told you so" scenario against those people who were against OJ. This is why you don't judge prospects without actual proof.
Im the exact type of person to say I told you so. OJ is going to turn heads this year, among Canuck fans. Steady, calm, hard working, and high hockey IQ. Juolevi has a Iot of tangibles you can't teach. I can't wait until he finds confidence in his unrated shot.

This is because these tests are widely inaccurate. They have an astounding amount of false positives. For example, my brother and his family have had 3 tests each. My brother tested positive, negative positive; His wife tested positive negative negative; Their child tested negative positive negative. They all live in the same house, and have been quarantining to their best ability. Reports like this are common.

The disrespect towards the Sedins is astounding. They're the best Canucks to play.
Sedin Sedin Bure
Naslund Pettersson Bure
Mogilny Kesler Bertuzzi
Miller Linden Tanti

He should be leading his team by a wide margin not 4th
Not with the ice time of those other 3 guys compared to Virtanen. They all play significantly more than Virt.

1) It was looking like we were going to lose Game 5 against St. Louis, then Green put Virtanen with Pettersson and Miller and we proceeded to take over and win that game and eventually the series, so you can’t say for sure he brings top 6 linemates down
2) The last two seasons Virtanen was on pace for over 20 goals each year and likely would have gotten there if he wasn’t hurt in 2018-19 and this last season wasn’t cut short.
I really don’t know why people don’t realize power forwards, especially Jake’s kind, take longer than other players to reach their potential.
Because they want instant gratification. Same deal with Juolevi. There's a reason they aren't quitting on him.. Many NHLers have said they can't believe his speed

Garbage take.
"A defense-only defenseman whose game is declining at a pretty rapid pace."
What utter garbage. Ignorance. One worthless, "for perspective", hero-chart quality bullcrap metric to base that one.
Does't have a clue - doesn't realize what they actually got.
Flames fans will appreciate Tanev when they see him in that mix.
Agreed. The idea that Tanev is not a quality guy who can play on your top pairing is ridiculous. That being said, I do think 6 years is too long, and I understand why Benning let him walk

Virtanen Benn pick
Gally
I don't think Vancouver has the room to trade a Dman. Also there's 0 way Montreal takes that.
Virtanen Sutter prospect pick is a bit more realistic

Remember when people thought Benning was done with the offseason already and we were going to be playing Jordie Benn in the top 4?
Not only did we add a top 4 dman, he's arguably a top pairing dman. For a 3rd round pick. But wait we traded a draft pick for a cap dump, surely someone's got beef with this as well.
Not arguably, Schmidt WAS their #1 until Theodore broke out

I don't get this whole 'not his plan' criticism that I keep hearing on the radio & reading on twitter. That this merely 'fell into his lap' (despite the fact this Schmidt rumour had been out there for awhile, meaning Vegas had been negotiating with teams - likely including us).
OEL wasn't his 'plan' either, that also fell into his lap. At one point the 'plan' was for Markstrom merely as a stopgap for Demko. And for Stecher to be apart of the core. And for Tanev to stick around when everyone wanted him traded in '16, exc, exc. Change is the only constant. And I never remember this criticism when Mike Gillis picked up Ehrhoff. Or when other teams have capitalized on market inefficiencies.
The 'plan' changes. Gillis used to always talk about all the different variables - (and around the time of the lockout the 'changing landscape') - that affects trying to acquire players. It's just the way things are.
And who's to say they weren't aware this was possible beforehand? Everyone knew Vegas's situation regarding going after & fitting in Pietrangelo. Benning called every team & said he had laid groundwork prior to the draft. He might've had this on the burner for awhile, which is maybe why he held firm on the offers for OEL & Tanev. That could be possible too.
Anyways, there are gripes to have - but this isn't one of them IMO
In retrospect. I am a little disheartend that 4(mid value) ufas walked. The fact that JB got nothing for even Stetchers rights was a tad frustrating

Hes not top pairing.
Hes 30 yrs old and hes going to eat up 6 mill of our cap until ges 36.
Im a big believer in Benning, but this was a brutal.
How do you justify not signing Tanev now?
He's signed until hes 33....

So its a good contract if Vegas has him at 5.9 but its a bad contract if Vancouver has it.

I was just about to open a thread on this.
I’m actually debating on trading Demko for a nice haul. His value has skyrocketed. He played 3 straight high pressure elimination games and literally stood in his head. Everyone in hockey noticed that.
We can explore trades like Demko and LE for a 1st and a high level prospect or a top 4 defenceman.
You keep Demko. I love Markstrom but he's at the age where he can win now. If he goes I'd like to see him go somewhere where he could win a cup, now.

When everyone was saying Brock would get 7M, I was saying 5.5-6M. Everyone is saying Petes going to get 8M. I think he's going to get 6.7-7.3M. Term will be the same as Boesers. Hughes, probably gets a similar contract. Benning is going to give all these kids a bridge to make a window.

A coaches job is to get the most out of the players he's given. That's not politics. What's being asked of Jake is well within the toolbox he already has. He just doesn't seem to want to put in the effort. If he played like Motte, which is the way they've been trying to get him to play, he'd be a top six shoe in because he's bigger, faster, and has a better shot than Motte. Meaning the tools are already there, he just needs to use them. He just doesn't have the commitment and drive Motte has to be the best he can. The proof is in the pudding. He's come into camp in poor shape two of his five seasons. Then again after the lockdown. As the cherry on top he went out partying during a pandemic just prior to entering the bubble with his teammates. No commitment to his job. Should any coach or GM ignore this?
I've preached patience with Jake for his first four seasons. But I've come to the conclusion he's not very bright and he's lazy to boot. He had a natural ability that required minimal effort in junior: He could simply overpower other kids with his size and speed to score. Have you noticed he doesn't try to deke defenders with skating or stickhandling? He's not a playmaker or great passer. Those skills require practice and effort. The defensive side of the game also requires work. It's just tougher to learn that side. He was succeeding in junior on one ability and saw no need to work on others. In other words he never really had to work hard and had no desire to do so. That lazy approach hasn't seemed to change much. He has improved his defensive play but I wouldn't put my trust in him in that department. And honestly that's the only minor improvement I've seen in five seasons. Watching games you can plainly see the effort and drive of players like Bo, Petey, Miller, Pearson, and Boeser at both ends of the ice. Do you see that consistent level of compete from Jake at either end? That's the reason they are top six and Jake isn't. It's also the reason he's verging on being expendable.
What am I missing that your seeing?
I mean, all you've done is speculate. Let's be honest here. He also may not be trying those things because he has such a short leash and doesn't want to make mistakes, shell shocked. I think that's a much more reasonable assumption than assuming you know what he's been doing, or if he's actually lazy or not. Also you say he's learned the game defensively, and another poster backed it up with stats earlier. And then you say he's never back in his own zone. He was 3rd on the team in takeaways this playoff run, I do believe.
So, a lot. To answer your question.
Statistically he performs well when surrounded by talent. That's where he should be. -
If Benning had traded for Jake, or he was a big signing, he'd be stapled to the top 2 lines ala Eriksson.

So he only can be one dimensional then? Put me in with ____________ and I can score. You want a guy who can elevate others, not depend on them. Brock gets moved around...it happens when you're trying to get some going. Virt's not special in that he has to have ideal conditions or. He should be more than just focused on scoring...Petey is a good role model for him. Put your head down and skate HARD to back check. He does on occasion but, often, he's a step behind on things so that's why he's playing catch up. The saving grace is...he can. His speed is something to consider too, as he has that. But he has to be consistent with all of it. Currently, he's still not.
It's not about quitting on him....it's about him not quitting. If every other guy is expected to give it all at both ends of the ice, he's part of that.
Honestly, I don't care where he succeeds so long as he succeeds. If he's a Kunitz or a Maroon, so be it. Enough with the politics, place him where he succeeds.

That's because Travis knows once he scores he's taking the rest of the night off.
I don't get why people are confused. Look who he was on the ice with for his goals. Do I wish he hit more? Yes, but that's obviously a coaching issue, and how he's been deployed. Virt is not a player you quit on

No.
At some point a guy gets enough chances that its mostly on him and thats where Jake is at. He's not terrible or a "bust" just not what you would have hoped for a 6th overall pick.
I feel like he's capitalized on opportunities and then doesn't get rewarded. He'll score on the first line and then be sent back to play with Beagle

If Virtanen played with half Motte's battle level, consistently, he'd be in the top 6 already.
He has all the tools, he's shown flashes of the ability. All he's lacking is the will, commitment and drive to do it consistently.
Did you know that, in these playoffs. Motte touching the puck, other than his goals, resulted in a turnover.
Motte has a leash far longer than Virtanen

If removing Brown and Baumgartner means losing Green, it's a sacrifice that must be made. There are many more Greens out there, but there are only one of Brown and Baumgartner plaguing this team.
