Don't you just trade Myers + $5m for a pick what ever that may be. His salary is then $1m per season. I recall money was included in the Gretzky trade

Teams haven't been able to trade cash since the '05 lockout.

I dunno about comtois .. I'd let the hockey canada sex scandal  play out before going anywhere near him

I thought he was one of the names that were mostly cleared. From what I remember it was names like Formenton, McLeod, Tkachouk, and some others. If I remember correctly, Batherson came in to eat pizza and saw what was happening then he noped out of there.

He could be involved though. If that’s the case I’d stay far away.

Silovs was doing pretty good, but there was no sense in putting him to fail. They should've left him there instead of having him play meaningless games. I am not blaming him for helping us. Far from it. The team clearly needed to go through a small rebuild of some kind. Instead, we offloaded the Horvat pick to buy a luxury item instead of being patient.

The team simply needed to float. Bring up some new guys to showcase them in a trade.

We didn't finish that much better than Detroit, so we could've gone to 8 or 9th. If we had kept the second 1st rounder, we could've gotten ASP or someone else. One of these guys could fill the role of Hronek. Do we REALLY need Hronek?

What if Hronek gets injured or busts in the future? Will people still think it's a good trade? It's an incredibly short sighted move to begin with. And if Hronek doesn't perform as expected, this trade will be awful.

I'm not sure what you mean by your first paragraph. The Canucks ran with a rookie goalie, that's a tank move right there.

Who do you suggest they bring up? PGD, Brisebois, Juulsen, Hirose, Studnicka, Dries, Wolanin, Kravtsov, McDonough, and McWard all played games down the stretch. In some cases, like Dries and PDG, they played higher up the lineup anybody could've expected them to.

Moving from 8th to 9th would've changed nothing.

The bolded sentences are very contradictory. "What if this proven commodity runs into an injury or doesn't fit well with us and he all of a sudden sucks, then I say we should've kept the draft pick and run with the 18 year old who will definitely help us".

And during the Bedard chase, what does management do instead of selling or sitting pat? We tried to do everything we could to win games lol.

What would have been your preferred course of action? Sit Petey, Miller, Hughes, Kuzmenko, Demko, or some combination of the 5? Slash their minutes and give them to depth players?

The roster was never bad enough to truly tank. They had a horrible first half with porous defense and AHL goaltending. If you think they had any chance of finishing around or lower than Chicago, Anaheim, Columbus, Montreal, Philly, San Jose, or Arizona I'd say you're nuts.

San Jose - Myers, Beauvillier, Kilmovich, Martin and a pick

    Vancouver - Kahkonen and Kunin

Reasoning - San Jose cuts loose Kahkonen, who didn't have a very good season, although San Jose is horrible. Creates more playing time for Blackwood. They gain two assets that could be traded for more assets at the TDL and acquire a stop gap back up goalie, a pick, as well as a young PWF with potential.

We gain 4.65 million in cap relief to be a bit more tactical during the offseason, looking for value deals. Take on Kahkonen for one year to buy time for Silovs. Also, I just really like Kunin, feel like he could help our 3rd line with some grit and the PK. Not to mention he has played the wing and Center before, so that gives us more options.

    Kuzmenko - Pete - Mikheyev

    Hogs - Miller - Boeser

    ? - ? - Podkolzin

    Joshua - Aman - Kunin

    Hughes - ?

    ? - Hronek

    Hirose - ?

    Demko

    Kahkonen

If both Pearson and Poolman are on LTIR this would give us over 16 million in cap space. More than enough to make a significant impact.

First I would target J.T Compher 3-4 year or O'Reilly on a 1-2 year contract.

    For the sake of this.

Compher 4 years at 3.25 per

Soucy 3 years at 2.75 per

Wood 2 years at 2.25 per

Schenn 2 years at 2 per with NTC

    Acquire C.Tanev for a 2025 2nd or 2025 3rd

    Kuzmenko - Pete - Mikheyev

    Hogs - Miller - Boeser

    Wood - Compher - Podz

    Joshua - Aman - Kunin

    Hughes - Tanev

    Soucy - Hronek

    Hirose - Schenn

    Demko

    Kahkonen

This would leave us with a shade over 2 million in cap space to upgrade at the deadline if need be.

I think this would be a playoff team if no major injuries occur.

    Thoughts?

I think Soucy and Compher's combined AAV's will be at least $2M higher than you're predicting here, probably more like $3 or 4 million more. Compher's going to get least $4.5 per year and Soucy likely gets at least $3.5, and I think those are fairly conservative estimates

I definitely don’t think we crushed this draft.

Wallinder is a fine pick, probably a little high but there really doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between pick 11 and pick 20… all pretty much the same tier, and lots of them that would likely be top

ten picks in a weaker draft class.

Hunter B. (I am not spelling that) and Mynio seem like reasonable picks…

4th round kind of fell apart.  Conventional wisdom (and it is conventional because it works), is that in later rounds you pick a guy with a high ceiling and some outstanding attribute that can translate to the NHL, and then work on the deficiencies.  Big, fast, elite shot, etc… any one of those.  We did get the big Swede, but he was so off the board he wouldn’t likely have been drafted.  If you are looking at bottom of the lineup guys in this range, a 6’6 guy who is going to play at 230-240lbs just has a better chance of carving out a bottom six role than an undersized guy.  The two over age, small centres are complete head scratchers.  IF everything goes well in their development they turn into players you can get on the waiver wire or for under $1 million any time you want.

I would have more happily used those picks to get rid of cap.  Three 4th round picks to move Garland?  Then use that cap space to snag a couple of RFAs who won’t be qualified but are better than what those 4th round picks are likely to become.

Celebrini was a fun pick because of being a local kid and his brother.  Maybe when we can eventually Re-unite two brothers down the road to take the sting out of losing Quinn to Jersey when he is eligible as a UFA.

I'm not going to freak out about it too much yet. I think it's a little presumptuous to say their best scenario is a waiver-wire or league minimum player. I'm sure there's others but off the top of my head I think of Bonino and Pavelski as two centers who were later round picks in their second years of eligibility. Looking at it, now, Pavelski's USHL numbers in the year he was drafted are good but not spectacular and he actually regressed statistically in his 20 year old season.

I'm not saying our picks today will end up as good as either of those two, but I do think some of the reactions to those picks are a little reactionary and premature.

It'd be amazing if he turned out like Brodin for the defensive aspect. Could grow into it with proper development. He's definitely well above average defensively for somebody his age. His engagement is probably my favourite aspect. I found him, Reinbacher and Simashev all had upper echelon defensive work. And like you said, if he was more dynamic with his offense he would have been selected even higher than Reinbacher. Reinbacher is more polished (the most out of this draft in my opinion) and then Simashev and Willander are in a tier below that but all have unique aspects of what makes them good. All 3 have spots of brilliance, but need a lot more consistency in their offensive games.

Yeah I was talking about Brodin as more of a high-end comp. Maybe a best-case scenario, though best case would probably mean he develops his offensive game a bit.

This is a repeat of what they did with Nate Schmidt. Dump him for a pick (also a 3rd) and use the salary space to sign an even better player.

Even though the pick isn’t as high as you’d expect, it’s still a huge win overall for Vegas.

What's the move for them? I could be completely off but it looks like they've got $3.4M in cap space + $5M for Lehner on LTIR. If Hill comes in around the reported ~$4.5M that leaves them around $4M to play with. Smith was at $5M for another two years. It's gonna be tough for them to find an adequate replacement within the confines of the salary cap.

That's first world problems for a team who just won a cup though.

Here's my synopsis of watching about 8 games of the kid.

I like this player, just not when Benson was on the board. Regardless, here is why I like him as a player:

    Pros:

Great skating. Has good acceleration and agility and tends to use it well. One of the better skaters in the draft.

Active defenseman. Engaged. This is extremely important on defense. Likes to battle a lot and will challenge along the wall often. He is not a fan of giving up the blue line easily. Will tie up sticks and compete in front of the net.

Size. Uses his size well and will throw hits. Not afraid to engage in these types of scenarios.

    Has poise with the puck.

Defensively responsible. Anticipates when transitions are about to occur on turnovers. This is where his defensive IQ shines. Elects to be safer than too risky.

    Decent along the walls defensively.

Seems to have a knack for shooting around screens.

    Cons:

His offense is nothing spectacular. Very very simple game. Has great edgework but has yet to incorporate it into his offense. He should have a much higher ceiling considering his skating ability but he isn't a huge roamer, doesn't like to be super deceptive.

Sometimes overcommits. Because he's a physical defenseman he likes to engage quite a bit with the body but sometimes doesn't lead with his stick the way he needs to in certain situations. I'm sure this will get ironed out under good coaching. Against a team who excels in give and go's he will need to adapt accordingly. Overall his defensive IQ is certainly above par for his age though.

Has poise, but sometimes too much poise. It's not super often, but he is prone to holding onto the puck too long and on zone exits does some silly things like instead of breaking out he turns back in his own zone despite ample opportunity to wheel outwards. Just sometimes looks as if he doesn't know what to do with the puck. This is pretty rare but certainly does show up from time to time.

    Not super dynamic.

    Ratings:

    Skating: 8/10

    Defensive IQ: 8/10

    Offensive IQ: 6/10

    Tenacity: 7.5/10

    Motor: 8/10

    Shot: 6/10

    Puck Handling: 5/10

    Vision: 5/10

    Passing Ability: 6.5/10

    Creativity: 4/10

    Offensive Processing Speed: 5/10

    Defensive Processing Speed: 7/10

    Anticipation: 8.5/10

    Decision Making on Offense: 6/10

    Decision Making on Defense: 8/10

    NHL Readiness: 7/10

    Personal Projection:

    Ceiling: Top 3 Defenseman

    Ceiling chance: 60%

    Floor: Depth defenseman

Floor chance: 10% (I don't think he will end up a depth defenseman unless he can't figure out timing and the speed of play at the NHL level but I think he will be alright with this in a few years)

Will need a couple years before transitioning to the NHL.

Where I expect him to end up: Top 3 - Top 4 Defenseman depending on the quality of team.

Comparable: an upgraded version of Elias Petterson the Defenseman

He significantly improved from the start of the season to the end of the season but I still have concerns about the timing of his aggression and his decision making with the puck. I don't believe he's a franchise changer by any means but he should be steady as long as he cleans up some of his decision making on breakouts. He showed growth in this area so hopefully that continues. I personally would have waited until later in the draft but I don't hate the player or think he has a high bust potential. I think we are gonna really like this kid when he's playing for us if he pans out. My only gripe is when he was taken, that's all. At pick 11 I prefer bigger game changing players but that's just preference.

Can't say I know anything about the kid beyond highlight videos but it seems you've watched him shift-by-shift a fair bit so I'll take your word. Thanks for the good write up. Like you say, if his tools were as consistently high-end as we seem to wish they were he probably would've gone like 5 spots higher. I like the roll of the dice on his skill set. Is somebody like Jonas Brodin maybe a good example of what we could hope for? The nationality and draft status are just coincidence, but it sounds like the talent comps might be accurate? Average size, best assets are skating and IQ, defensively inclined, etc.

    1 hour ago, Pickly said:

One thing to add is the worrisome that not only American but now Canadian born players is the risk they could bolt from small market Canadian teams (not named Toronto) to  US teams as soon as they hit UFA status or even sooner. For some reason Vancouver has been a desirable place for Scandinavian born players to live and raise families.

I know there are exception, but it seems as if now more than ever that this is becoming a reality. IMO it’s going to be a factor moving forwards with drafting and acquiring talent.

We might be overstating the problem right now after seeing Calgary these last couple years but I don't hate the idea either. Scandinavian players have been relatively good to us. An EP2/Willander pairing sounds pretty good to me.

Still haven't explained why you think it's the fault of those who criticized the players.  And completely ignoring the fact that homophobia is rampant across North American culture.  A study came out last week about increasing attacks and harassment against LGBTQ people in the United States.

The jersey removal is a victory for those who think discrimination should be protected under free speech.  By (supposedly) keeping politics out of sport, hockey is no longer a safe space for the LGBTQ.  Thanks, people.

This isn't an "agree to disagree".  You're simply ignoring the massive cultural shift we've seen and how discrimination has gone UP in the past five years.  It's become socially acceptable to hate minority groups again.  And you're just eating all of it up like a lapdog.

If you were to make a Venn diagram of the people who argue that Beach should've defended himself (and overlook the fact that the Blackhawks organization wrote letters of recommendation for Aldrich in pursuit of a job coaching minors in which he ended up sexually assaulting minors) and the people who say they're against Pride nights/jerseys/memorabilia "because of the kids",  what do you think it would look like?

Watching the draft tonight has me all kinds of pissed off. The Blackhawks organization swept the Beach/Aldrich situation under the rug, then wrote letters of recommendation for him to pursue a job in which he molested kids (despite knowing that he AT LEAST a potential sexual predator) , and for that they got the lightest slap on the wrist. They got a lesser punishment than the Devils and Canucks got for the Kovalchuk/Luongo contract or the Coyotes did for their draft workout issues.

Seeing the way that situation played out, paired with the the juxtaposition of the LGBTQ theme nights vs the constant barrage of gambling ads, I think I might be out on the NHL.

while i am pleased to get the RHD we need Im having a hard time getting excited about the pick. Not sure this helps us for another couple years. Perhaps we can still sign a player to fill the void on the back end this FA class. Who were you hoping to get that would have a more immediate impact?

But where did this script come from? I could understand if it was someone who messed up drafting Price, but that wasnt the case…. So im confused about that joke? He needed help for sure on making that selection. You’d think he would have cut the joke and made the selection.
idk maybe it was a joke, but that was tough to watch either way.

there is no doubt he was a very smart guy and a great speaker. Always gave good interviews….  That one just seemed like something was really off…. Especially with his mental health in recent years

I thought they were having a bit of fun with the gag that somebody royally screws up one of the European names every year.

It's definitely possible that it wasn't scripted. We don't really know what's going on with Price. It seemed odd to me because Reinbacher is one of the easier Euro names to pronounce.
