Wouldn't be surprised at all if Sweden doesn't pick him at all and he ends up in Utica throughout the playoff run. Gronborg has been such a disaster for Swedish hockey.

What is the deal with all the team Sweden snubs eh?? They sniffing glue? Are they that stubbord!? However, I hope they do snub him and he comes to Utica for the playoffs. But that is me being selfish...

Another bit on EP from a non-Canuck perspective.   Was talking with an Oiler's associated scout who has been following decent development of their 2016 pick defensemen Filip Berglund of Skellefteå.   We chatted about Berglund (who he sees as a slightly more talented Holm in terms of SEL recents and who potentially projects to NHL in two more years) and, again for what it is worth, he figures EP is a lock for NHL next year, figures he could be in conversation for first overall if in the draft this year (if he was born just weeks earlier) and found it quite odd people think SEL is "soft" and that EP would find NA game tough.   He is the one who offered me up the Patrick Kane comparison last fall.   He also, for what it is worth, think people need to temper expectation on Dahlin as he figures he is great but not quite as good as Hedman was at same age in some key areas (that are key for NHL success) and it took better part of four or five seasons to become really dominant with Tampa.

Some other thoughts from him, this time a bit mixed.  On the good, he thinks Dahlen is severely underrated and will surprise people in North America ("he is more like his Dad than many will understand - not big but what a pain in the assets to play against")  on the not so good, he is far from keen on Lind.   He spent two months in North America this past year and gave me a list of reasons like Lind will not make the NHL.   I don't fully agree at all but he points to Shinkaruk as a comparable type player.   Again, just his opinions and they are like, "assets".

Thanks for the update. I disagree about Lind as well. Just listening to Ryan Johnsons recent interview and he shed some really important light to me about Lind. Which is he is pretty shocked about the difference of hockey in the WHL compared to the AHL. Johnson goes on to state that he is happy with his progress as he is taking it all in stride and is taking the humble approach and watching and learning. Some prospects aren't ready right away. Some need to see what it's like to be a Pro every day all day on ice or off it, so to me it's still a win that he is taking this information and not getting cocky about it, and not taking this opportunity for granted whether he plays or not.

Wow. That really shows his commitment to coming to North America. He would've been in Utica from the start of the year if he hadn't gotten mono, but he had a pretty successful year in the Allsvenskan anyway.

Not only does it show commitment to coming to North America, it shows commitment to his team. Which he has shown time and time again. He's willing to put all the flashy high end accolades aside to focus on his team and nothing else. The fact he didn't leave Timra and go to the SHL shows the kind of player he will become...unfinnished business, okay lets get it done, then single handedly wills the team back into the SHL. Guys like this are what you need on a team. Love it! His sacrifices will lead to greater things in the future. Kid is full of character.

I’ve think I’ve always said third liner. No reason to change that opinion. Two-way, speed and energy guy, with the skills to make good plays, maybe some 2nd unit PP, and hopefully some PK (he’s still working on that part but I think he could become a great penalty killer).

EDIT: re: the Trinec GM, it was really strange at the time. You had a kid that wanted to play CHL. I’m sure it happens but I’ve just never heard of another team saying “sorry kid but you can’t leave.” And then, to add insult to injury, they played him sporadically and like 5-7 minutes a game with zero opportunities.

I know it was very strange how he was handled over there. Borderline ridiculous. In any case i'm not complaining because the kid has an absolute fire in his tummy right now. I know you and I have talked about the Hansen comparison, but I really like the way he is trending since he come over. I hope he has a great playoffs. He's got the style of game to be very effective in the post season. No quit motor, chippy, can score, beauty.

  5. I don't know guys. Corsi be damned. The kid can play. He has looked great with Sutter and Archibald. Getting all the heavy assignments. You're gonna get hemmed in your own zone when facing the top player in the league. But when I watch him hound and fore check players it reminds me of a mini version of Hansen. No quit, always going hard. His offense is not great, but I do think we got a great defensively minded energy player on our hands. Can you honestly say that watching Motte you have gotten the sense that he doesn't belong? I don't care what metric you measure him by, he is effective and very useful.

Jeff Veillette is one of the worst at Canucksarmy, HE LOVES his stats. And considers them gold. Why go and post something like that on twitter? Douche! He did the same for Dorsett, slagged him for his Corsi, and Sutter as well. Then Dorsett is forced to retire due to injury and Canucksarmy writes a piece about how great a guy he was and how much of a warrior he was. Friggin Bi-polar website. I used to read it all the time. They used to not be so full of themselves.

Dunno.   Vanek I agree with but Jussi....I think you are seeing  some "bounce" in his game that will not sustain but I would be happy to be proven wrong.   If I were GM, not sure I would Jussi up for next year.

...how about now...? lol. I do think he is worth a 1 mil contract. Nothing more. But 3 points tonight and showing chemistry with Horvat. Nice to see. I wonder if he is still good at shoot outs? He used to be the best in the league back in the day with Dallas.

    This^^^^^^

I could see bringing him back if the Sedins do retire tho. I'd like to see them sign Bozak for some higher end stability at center. But i'm sure he'll go to a playoff contender. I do think that we need to insulate ourselves from future injuries. Our depth was tested yet again this year, and people complained about how many vets we signed. It was barely enough to keep us competitive. Realistically Bozak would not sign here, so i'd be happy to try and bring back Vanek and Jussi to replace the Sedins.

...but the way the Sedins play with Gagne really have me pondering if they will indeed come back for another year to see if they can continue to make magic with him. For all the knocking we've done agains Gagne this year, and I am one of them...he has been really impressive with the twins. Showing lots of creativity in the offensive zone. May be worth one more year to see how it goes.

So conflicted lol. My main point being if 2 vets go, 2 vets need to come back in. In my own opinion. I would love to say let the kids play, but we really do not know how they will pan out till they hit the ice next year. I can't see management having any taste in exposing their youth like that and potentially ruining their development.

People cried when Bo was put on the 4th line for 2 seasons in a row, people cried when Jake was held back in minutes, and same with Goldy...proof is in the pudding, look at these guys now. They really bring something to the table other than just being able to "play". The coaching staff is turning these kids from one dimensional players to adding depth and tools to their repetoir and rounded out their PRO game. I am truly impressed how far they have come, especially Goldy. Props due, I have been hard on him. But he is really changing my mind. Other mentionables, Baertchi and Granlund. Both were broken. Both have been fixed. Knock Granny all you want, but he is up there with Sutter on defensive prowess...IMO.

  8. What!? Jasek is real!? He does exist! He is not a figment of our collective imaginations!?... really like that he is coming over, he reminds me of Hansen. Low pick, seems to have a high motor. Which is what was said about Hansen back in the day. I’m buying the Comets playoff package, gonna be fun to watch some future Canuck playoff hockey this year... ::D

    His team wins...he scores...he’s a plus 2...and he plays 27 minutes.

What quiet Swede Dman does that remind you of?  Can you say Nic Lidstrom?  I knew you could.

Lol Alf, his first name is Olli, that ain’t Swedish. He’s a dirty Fin like Salo!

To be clear, ( poor wording on my part ) I don't see BG as a top six player. But.......I believe he could play a role in the top six under certain situations. Two young offensive players might need a defence first player on their line. Temporary injury fill in. He's smart, he'll do what the coach asks him to do.

Players like this are invaluable to a team. And I still think he does have the abliity to move up the depth chart and settle into a 3rd line role putting up 30 points. While playing all the hard minutes in the Dzone and on the PK. Maybe on the 2nd PP as a net front presence? He's strong as an ox.

Edler and Gudbranson has been the best defensive pairing this year. I always thought that pairing an equal sized or larger defenseman, especially one adept at physicality, would be the best situation for Edler. I thought that it would allow him more freedom to create some offense, which he has.

As well, being paired with a defenseman as fearless and physical as Gudbranson has reinvigorated the beast in Edler too. The way Edler went after that coward Johansen was awesome. I've never seen that from him before and it was a very welcome sight.

Agreed, I like the way Edler plays when paired with Guddy. Seems to bring a bit of nasty out in him. I likey lol. It's nice to see him show emotion for once!

Certainly he's had issues, and has beat them for the most part. He's been one of the bright spots on the defense this year, along with his most steady defensive partner in Edler.

This team has needed the elements he brings to the team for quite a while now. Those who look at him and his contract as an issue will see how valuable he is in time.

I love that pairing. They were lights out in pre-season too. Glad Green finally paired them up. Also i'm impressed like you with his pain tolerance. That contraption he was wearing to support his shoulder was massive. Makes me think it was just hanging on by a friggin thread. Guy is a beast. Glad he's on our team. Him and Edler could be our next Hamhuis and Bieksa. People forget that Edler is only 32, and it's shown in the past that if he's partnered with the right dman he can really shine. People knock Eddy, but he is a minute munching dman.

If any of it's on the water, Try could get a nice speed boat for his commute downtown and avoid the roads

Unfortunately no, all farm land around his area...lotsa ground hogs...maybe he likes to ground hog hunt lol? My dad has a never ending battle with them. Kinda sad to see it get split up, but he bought it years ago for cheap and knew it would be a good retirement plan!

A half acre out by UBC would probably be great but that's going to be expensive even for someone making millions.

My dad has 10 acres out in fort Langley that he is going to sub divide over the next few years. There we go problem solved!

  15. I also think Benning is insulating himself for next year if the twins don’t resign. You need to ice a competitive roster, and at least these guys can play on In the nhl. Both have upside and it will be interesting to see what kind of offence they bring to the team to end this season. Both of them have to see we will have some major openings next year they will be playing for top positions, pretty motivating if you ask me. Benning has created some good competition for next years roster.

Take this in. He has played 40 games this year for Frolunda, and has 0 points. Remarkably, he is only a -1

Stay at home defensmen to the max lol. But he seems agile enough with his skating to be able to translate on the smaller ice. A new age Douglas Murray??

Wow, cool story bro.   When he was drafted, there was talk about his leadership and in Utica they raved about how well he did in the "room".   If you are going to go "there", why didn't you mention that he hangs out at clubs with Virtanen where they overeat together.

Do you remember a guy call Burrows - scored 10 goals in his first 125 or so games including 3 his entire 82 game second year and many people started talking about him like you are above now.  I see CDC all-time greatest thread is about Burrows.

Funny I thought that last game. I remember Burrows’s first season, he only scored 8 goals I think, playing on the 4th line. He scored a hat trick in one game near the end of the season. He came back the following year being challenged by the coaching staff to score more as his D game was solid. Then boom, the growth of Alex Burrows goes on from there. I just had shades of those memories the other night when Gaunce almost got his first hat trick.

I do think it's a good thing for his development. My concern with OJ has always been his mindset towards the game. He seems to have a "don't tell me what to do" kind of style, which imho is not a great sign, and for me it's a concern. On the ice when he gets beat he seems to give up a little. Off the ice when he's questioned he seems to give a little attitude.

This is all perception on my part, obviously, and I hope I'm wrong, but I do hope that he learns from the adversity he's currently experiencing, because I thinks it's the right call to give him a little wakeup call.

Edit: is it possible he has an entitlement issue?

I don’t know what his issue is, but I don’t like that he’s got attitude issues. I do like that they have Salo coaching him over there. If he needs to be broken down and re-constructed mentally i’d rather it happen over there under Salos tutelage.

Yes, I seriously do.   I cannot speak for anyone else but, yes, I do think that.   I think trading Virtanen now would be insane and giving up on OJ would be even moreso.

Agreed, Cam Neely...that’s all i’ll say...
