  1. Coastal class has been kinda brutal lately. So many issues.
  2. That's rough, literally! The sidewalk is wider in other sections, it just gets super narrow in this section. A little further down there's a telephone pole right in the middle of the sidewalk. Seems like a super outdated sidewalk and/or they just haven't cared at all since there's another path up on Camosun.
  3. My thinking is that if people shouldn't use the sidewalk then they should either renovate it or get rid of it entirely. It seems silly to have such a risky "sidewalk" that they just threw together. There might be space if they expanded into the Camosun campus but honestly I don't see them putting that much effort in. It will be interesting to see if action is taken, as I said in the interview I have personally seen people struggling with this sidewalk. While I was there for the Times Colonist photos, an older lady came by and had to walk with her bike on the road just to get through. Luckily there wasn't two lanes of traffic passing by, otherwise there wouldn't have been space for the cars to move over. It's photo 2/3 on here: https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/the-worst-sidewalk-in-greater-victoria-is-just-a-thin-strip-along-a-busy-road-7407133
  4. The results are in for Victoria's "Janky June" worst sidewalk contest of 2023! Local news is reporting on this sidewalk that apparently is literally just a thin strip of cement. Looks pretty dangerous. Good thing it was reported. https://globalnews.ca/news/9897954/victorias-jankiest-sidewalk-contest/ Here is this year's winning sidewalk photos by Chad Gaucher: Wait a minute, wasn't there a guy on this forum named Chad in a jersey contest recently? ... Yes. ... Didn't CDC help him tremendously? ... Yep. ... Is he still grateful for everything CDC did to support him? ... He sure is. ... How do you know? ... THAT'S ME! I WON A NEW CONTEST AND MADE THE NEWS! LET'S GO!! Thanks again for helping me in that previous jersey contest, regardless of the final results. Since I just won this new sidewalk contest, I wanted to give a shoutout to CDC for helping me last time. I think your support in the last contest really motivated me to enter this new contest. Anyways, we drive by this awful sidewalk all the time so I gave the contest a shot and won! I couldn't be happier!

  6. On my way to watching the Canucks play the Kings last season, we took the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver and then stopped at the BC Ferries maintenance dock (Deas Dock) along the way to take a look at the retired Queen of Burnaby. I was really worried the place would be closed, but it was open and we drove into the back parking lot, which is literally right beside where the Queen of Burnaby is tied up. I have memories of seeing the Queen of Burnaby in the docks from when I was younger, but I never travelled on the ship. This felt like an opportunity I couldn't pass on, to see one of the final V class ships before it gets sent away to be scrapped. Here are my photos from this special day: The first glimpse of that classic funnel. I remember the excitement of this moment. The big moment! This old, rusty, amazing ship just sitting quietly hidden away in the maintenance dock. BC Ferries logos painted blue, the outline is visible. Here's something I think you'll all find quite interesting. The original Expo 86 paint scheme is beginning to re-emerge. The white paint is chipping away, revealing the past. Here's a photo (Credit: John Hammersmark) that shows the old design back in the day. 7. Wow what a rare piece! Thanks for sharing that, it's too bad they barred it, but understandable for sure. It doesn't paint BC Ferries in the best light.
  8. Yessss! The Tsawwassen was such a classic. I remember being on family trips when I was younger and we took the Tsawwassen for sure. When I was younger I always loved the funnels of the ships (Still do ), and the Tsawwassen's short-slanted funnel really stood out to me. I only just recently learned that all the V class ships originally had those slanted funnels, and you can actually see the line where they extended the funnel heights when the ships were stretched. Here's a photo I took on the Queen of New Westminster, the line is pretty visible in this shot. Funny because I always thought it was some sort of pipe. Did you ever work on the Queen of Victoria and/or Burnaby?
  9. It's strange what a five cent disaster can lead to..
  10. Wow, that is incredible. Thank you for your service! Did you work on the Queen of Nanaimo, Vancouver, Saanich, etc..? The V class is my favorite class for sure.
  11. Fantastic story, thanks so much for sharing. That is absolutely a day to remember. Just looking at those cars on the car decks, it's incredible that no people were killed. Another scenario in which thankfully no one was killed: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/b-c-ferry-that-hit-marina-just-kept-coming-1.536832 B.C. ferry that hit marina 'just kept coming' CBC News · Posted: Jun 30, 2005 10:46 AM PDT | Last Updated: August 16, 2016 The 7,000-tonne ferry missed the Horseshoe Bay terminal and smashed through a marina. Divers found no victims as they searched the water around a grounded B.C. ferry that missed the West Vancouver terminal and plowed through dozens of boats on Thursday. The operator, BC Ferries, promised a full investigation to determine why the 7,000-tonne vessel smashed into the marina beside the Horseshoe Bay terminal at about 10:10 a.m. local time. The 7,000-tonne ferry missed the Horseshoe Bay terminal and smashed through a marina. Witnesses said the Queen of Oak Bay seemed to have lost power before it veered into Sewell's Marina. But David Hahn, the president of BC Ferries, said it was too early to say what caused the crash. "It's very clear that something went wrong, probably on the mechanical side, but beyond that I can not speculate," Hahn told a news conference on Thursday afternoon. Canadian Coast Guard divers searched the water around the ferry for two hours before wrapping up at about 1:30 p.m. without finding any victims. They also checked the hull of the ferry to ensure it was safe to move to the dock, so that 544 passengers who had been stuck on board all day could disembark. "I'm just extremely grateful there was no loss of life or no injuries," Hahn said. 'It kept coming and coming' Witnesses said the ferry, which left Nanaimo for Horseshoe Bay at 8:30 a.m., was blowing its horn as it crashed into the marina. 'As I started to walk, you could see the employees of BC Ferries yelling and waving their hands and saying, "Run! Run! Run!" So I started running.' "It kept coming and coming," Gus Tsogaf, who owns the Bay Moorings Restaurant, told CBC News. "A low speed, but it just kept coming. It just couldn't stop." As the ferry approached, people who were in the boats or on the docks ran for shore. Bruce Munroe, who manages the Boat Centre, said he was inside a customer's boat doing repairs and couldn't see the ferry when he heard its horn blow. At first, he assumed it was a normal warning for a smaller vessel to get out of the way. But when he heard a second, longer blast, he began to move. "I quickly got out of the boat and started walking away from the ferry toward the main dock," he told CBC News. "And as I started to walk, you could see the employees of BC Ferries yelling and waving their hands and saying, 'Run! Run! Run!' So I started running." Passengers warned before crash The ferry's passengers said they were told to brace themselves shortly before the impact. Reached by cellphone while he waited to disembark, passenger Chris Hulsen said he and his family followed the instructions on the loudspeaker. They raced to their car and fastened their seatbelts, then waited tensely as alarms blared for about a minute before the collision occurred. "The actual impact itself was really pretty uneventful," Hulsen told CBC News. "If we hadn't been told we were going to crash, we would have thought it was just a normal docking." Extra ferry runs to be added for weekend The accident forced BC Ferries to suspend service at the Horseshoe Bay terminal just as the long Canada Day weekend began. However, at the afternoon news conference, Hahn said the company would be adding extra runs to handle the extra passengers. The Queen of Oak Bay, which was first launched in 1981, recently underwent $35 million in upgrades and had only returned to service two weeks earlier. BC Ferries was transformed from a provincially operated Crown corporation into an independent, commercial organization in April of 2003. It is now operated at arm's length from the government of British Columbia.
  12. That's really cool that you got to work on the Spirit class! I remember seeing a video that explained how the Spirit class ships turned too sharply on the first day, which caused plates to fall and shatter around the Cafe. They are really nice ships, I wish they never Coastalized the interiors of all the ships, they had so much more personality before the upgrades. Part of the reason the Queen of New Westminster is my favorite ship! That, and the fact that I was able to take a bridge tour on the way to Vancouver, and they let me sound the horn twice through active pass. I had always dreamed of doing that since I was very young. A dream come true! Huge respect to the captain, chief officer, and other staff on the ship.
  13. Nice!! That's the bridge in those windows, the bridge for the Spirit class is quite spacious, whereas the old Queen of New Westminster has quite a small bridge room.
  14. Yeah, a lot of people aren't happy that BC Ferries has been getting ships built in Germany. The old Victoria class ships (Queen of New Westminster, Queen of Vancouver, etc..) were all built locally, as well as the Spirit class ships. The newer Coastal class were built in Germany though.
  15. Apparently they are planning on ordering 11 new ships, 4 small, 7 large, with extra dip some time in the late 2020's, with the first new large ship entering service by 2029. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bc-ferries-new-vessel-ship-orders
  16. @Brad Marchand @bishopshodan @brilac Alright done:
  17. Or a great time, in terms of rant-post volume
  18. Here's a thread to post BC Ferries related news and discussions. Feel free to share your BC Ferries related stories and photographs as well! I might as well share my photo of the Spirit of Vancouver Island in Active Pass.
  19. Alright well this just became the BC Ferries thread, maybe I'll just make one
  20. The Queen of Nanaimo didn't really sound much like the Canucks goal horn, but I'm pretty sure most of the ships have (or had) different horn models than each other. The Queen of Vancouver had a deep strong whistle, but I'm not sure what the horn models were. Here's a video from Flickr by Graham Johnson. One of my favorite videos of the old Queen of Vancouver.
  21. The Canucks goal horn probably best resembles the Queen of Oak Bay's whistle.
  22. If it's BC Ferries then expect delays.
